Championship of Zurich (Meisterschaft von Zurich), World Cup Round 8. Sunday, August 17. 236.6 km.
Like all world Cup races, the Zurich Championship has attracted a superb field. Bettini is going for 3 World Cup races in a row. Scheduled to ride: Bettini, Ullrich, Hamilton, Frigo, Sastre, Bartoli, Basso, Virenque, Ekimov, Hincapie, Astarloa, Di Lucca, Celestino, Evans, Vinokourov, Julich, Dufaux, Boogerd, Freire, Casagrande, Rebellin, Garzelli, Mazzoleni, Rodriguez, Zulle, Camenzind, Van Petegem, Merckx, Brochard, Moreau, Popovych.
Podium History of Championship of Zurich
It was basically all-together with the last 40 km lap to go. The selection occured on the Pfannenstiel climb when Ullrich put the hammer down. He didn't have the suds to make it stick. But after that the attacks and counter-attacks came. When one break was absobed with 8 km to go, Nardello took off, taking advantage of the disorganization of the chase. Ullrich left the leaders with a couple of kilometers to go. Bettinin got another 50 World Cup points to give him 350. Boogerd sneaked past Van Petegem to gain second place at 204. Van Petegem remains at 203, now in 3rd place.
