The race:
The Amstel Gold Race, named after and sponsored by Amstel Beer, is the most important race on the Dutch calendar. Held in April, it features 31 hills, some of which are very steep, such as the 20% Keutenberg. The race is run on the roads of Limburg, a province in southern Netherlands. From 2003 until 2013 the race finished at the top of the Cauberg hill in Valkenburg.
Since 2017, the last (4th) ascent of the Cauberg was removed so that the Geulhemmerberg and Bemelerberg (7.4 km from the finish) are the last climbs now.
Jan Raas holds the record for wins at five. Since Raas, the race has been very difficult for a single rider to dominate. As of 2010, the last 30 editions have had 29 winners.
As of 2010, Dutch riders have won their race 17 times, compared to 10 Belgian and 5 Italian victories.
