The race:
The Coppa Bernocchi is a single-day professional bicycle race held in Legnano, Italy. It is part of the Trittico Lombardo (Lombardy Triptych), three races held in late Summer/early Fall in the northern Italian region of Lombardy: Tre Valle Varesine, Coppa Ugo Agostoni and the Coppa Bernocchi.
The race is named after Antonio Bernocchi, a textile industrialist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
It is one of cycling's oldest races, the first edition having been run in 1919 and won by Ruggero Ferrario. Libero Ferrario and Danilo Napolitano share the record of having won the race three times.
From 1919 to 1924 it was an amateur race.
The 1931 edition was annulled under the strangest of circumstances. Winner Alfredo Bovet was disqualified for not having signed in at one of the controls. Then it turned out a race steward prevented Bovet from signing. The UVI (Italian Cycling Federation) found so many irregularities with how the race was run, the 1931 race and its results were annulled.
In 1954 and 1956 the race was an individual time trial.
In 1961, 1976 and 1984 the race winner was declared Italian road champion.
In 2009 the name was changed to GP Banca di Legnano-Coppa Bernocchi.
In 2005 the UCI has ranked it 1.1 made made it part of the Europe Tour.
In 2015 it was again renamed: Coppa Bernocchi-GP Banco BPM
Coppa Benocchi is now a 1.Pro rated race.
