Giro d'Italia stage twenty team reports

We posted the report from stage winner & GC leader Jonas Vingegaard's Team Visma | Lease a Bike with the results.

Here's the Giro stage twenty report from young rider classification leader Afonso Eulalio's Team Bahrain Victorious:

Afonso Eulálio has all but secured the Maglia Bianca at the Giro d’Italia after defending his lead in the young rider classification on Stage 20, the final mountain stage of the race.

The 200km stage from Gemona del Friuli to Piancavallo was the last major test before tomorrow’s final stage in Rome. The route included the Clauzetto climb before the race reached Piancavallo twice, with the final ascent coming after almost three weeks of racing.

For Bahrain Victorious, the priority was clear: protect Eulálio’s lead in the young rider classification and bring the white jersey through the final mountain stage. Davide Piganzoli remained the closest threat, but Eulálio responded with another strong ride under pressure and kept control of the Maglia Bianca before the final day.

The stage was won by Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), who attacked on the final climb and took a solo victory ahead of Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) and Jai Hindley (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe). Behind, the GC riders split again on the final ascent, but Eulálio limited his losses and defended his lead in the young rider classification.

After Stage 20, Eulálio leads the Maglia Bianca standings and sits sixth overall. Damiano Caruso also remains inside the top ten in ninth, giving Bahrain Victorious two riders in the top ten ahead of the final stage in Rome.

For Eulálio, the result comes at the end of a Giro in which he showed consistency across all three weeks. After wearing the Maglia Rosa earlier in the race, he continued to defend the young rider classification through the hardest mountain stages and has now all but secured the Maglia Bianca heading into the final stage.

Afonso Eulálio said:
“Today was another hard day, with long climbs again in the final. After yesterday’s stage, I was not feeling at my best mentally, because it had been such a hard day, but the team and all the staff did an amazing job. They motivated me, they believed in me, and in the end we kept fighting to bring home the Maglia Bianca.

"To finish this Giro with the white jersey, and with both me and Damiano in the top ten overall, is something I will never forget. This Giro will stay in my head forever.”

Sports Director Franco Pellizotti said:
“It was an amazing day for us. Stage 20 was difficult because Piganzoli was close, but Afonso did another amazing day. We arrive in Rome with this white jersey, and I’m very proud — not only about the jersey, but about the whole Giro.

"We had Alec’s stage victory, two riders in the top ten on GC, nine days in the pink jersey, and now the white jersey. I would say it’s a dream, especially after the start we had, losing Santi early in the race. Nobody knew what this Giro could become for us, but the guys worked a lot, and the commitment from everyone was incredible. I want to say thanks to all of them.”

Here's the Giro stage twenty report from GC fourth-place Thymen Arensman's Team Netcompany INEOS:

Thymen Arensman will ride into Rome in fourth place overall at the Giro d'Italia, with Egan Bernal holding 10th place following the final day of climbing.

The pair crossed the line in fifth and sixth place after two back to back ascents of Piancavallo, retaining their GC positions after a great display of teamwork on stage 20.

Bernal put in a huge turn to help pace Arensman back to the group of chasing GC contenders ahead. The Colombian set a strong tempo and continued on the front as the Netcompany INEOS pair overhauled the gap to Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM), Jai Hindley (Red Bull - Bora - Hansgrohe) and Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek).

Up ahead Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike) had soloed clear with around 11km to go to claim victory and cement his grip on the maglia rosa for 2026.

Earlier Jack Haig had pushed on up the road as part of the day's early breakaway. The Aussie led the group over the first pass of Piancavallo, before dropping back into the GC group late on.

The action concludes in the Italian capital of Rome on Sunday, with riders required to cross the line safely to make sure of their final positions on the general classification.

Thymen Arensman: "Egan really was the MVP today. But we had a plan for today and we did exactly that. I think we both did a super good performance and paced the climb to absolute perfection. Also really chapeau to the team all day - they really did a super good job for me. I feel super proud and honoured to ride for this team and to get a nice result back for the team. I'm just really proud of the guys.

"I know, like yesterday, on such steep climbs I have to pace a little bit more, then on the little bit easier parts we could make a difference together. It's super nice when a plan comes together."

And here's the Giro stage twenty report from Gianmarco Garofoli's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

With the last mountain stage of the race out of the way, only 131 kilometers remain until the 109th edition of the season’s first Grand Tour comes to a conclusion. It will be a last opportunity for the sprinters, and a well-deserved one after they made it over the double ascent of the famous Piancavallo that the penultimate day of racing scheduled.

Despite two separate groups going from the peloton in the hope of getting a good result, it ended up being a day for the general classification men. Pink jersey Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) took the win, while Gianmarco Garofoli - who had been present in four breakaways in the last three weeks - came over the line as the first Soudal Quick-Step rider home.

“It has been a hard and exhausting Giro d’Italia, but I gave it my best and tried to go for a good result whenever I was presented with the opportunity. I’ve learned a lot from this race and I’m confident this experience will be useful in the future. We have one more stage here and we’ll do everything we can to get another solid result”, Gianmarco said referring to Sunday’s stage, where maglia ciclamino Paul Magnier will be one of the favorites.
