Weather at the finish city of Oviedo at 2:40 PM, local time: 14C (58F), cloudy, with the wind from the north-northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph).

The race: Here's the stage four report from GC fourth-place Txomin Juaristi's Team Euskaltel-Euskadi.

Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) finished fourth—just one second off the podium—at the Vuelta a Asturias (2.1) following the fourth and final stage, a 152.2-kilometer route between Lugones and Oviedo, while Jonathan Lastra placed eighth.

On another undulating day, the battle for the podium ignited on the Alto de San Esteban de las Cruces (Cat. 2)—a 4.7 km climb averaging 4.8%—located six and a half kilometers from the finish line. Juaristi stayed right alongside the race favorites—Quintana (MOV), Pericas (UAD), and Díaz (BBH)—while leaving Samuel Fernández (CJR) and Pescador (MOV) behind. At the finish line, he crossed in fifth place, missing out on the final podium by a mere second to take fourth overall, with Jonathan Lastra securing eighth place in the final standings.

Txomin Juaristi: "Today was the final day—and therefore the last opportunity—to make it onto the podium. We knew our rivals would make a push and that the final climb was going to be extremely tough, and that’s exactly how it played out. Samuel Fernández hit a rough patch, and Pescador got dropped; I managed to make it into the lead group and did some work at the front, though I held a little something back so as not to lose time against my direct rivals. In the end, I missed the podium by just one second, but I’m happy with how I performed throughout the tour."

Juaristi had previously finished seventh at O Gran Camiño and 22nd at the Itzulia. The rider from Markina-Xemein rode with the leaders during the queen stage of the Asturias tour—Stage 2—and was prevented from reaching the podium only by time bonuses. Lastra, for his part, also demonstrated a high level of performance throughout the race. Cadena (TSM) won the final stage, while Quintana (MOV) was crowned the overall winner. Nicolas Alustiza, Unai Aznar, Samuel Fernández, Txomin Juaristi, Jonathan Lastra, Gari Ugarte, and Danny van der Tuuk made up the seven-rider "orange" squad. Aznar in the first stage, Van der Tuuk in the second, Alustiza in the third, and Ugarte in the fourth have all featured in the day's breakaways.

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

Weather at the finish city of Vegadeo at 3:00 PM, local time: 19C (66F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Filippo Baroncini's UAE Team Emirates-XRG.

The resurgent Filippo Baroncini took an excellent second place finish on stage 3 of the Vuelta Asturias, with the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider getting better with every passing race day.

The Vuelta Asturias is only Baronconi’s second stage race since making his comeback from injury last month. It had been a long road to recovery for the rouleur, who suffered serious injuries in a high-speed crash at last year’s Tour de Pologne. But over half a year on from that incident, Baroncini is returning to his former level, with a win not looking far away for the 25-year-old.

Clearly still packing a tidy sprint, Baroncini brought home the peloton on stage 3, with the day’s victory taken by Edgar David Cadena (Team Storck-MRW Bau). The Mexican held on from the breakaway to take an impressive win in the Asturias region.

As for Baroncini, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG man survived the day’s tough climbs in fine shape, and alongside his teammate Adrià Pericas, finished in a reduced group that crossed the line just 26 seconds after Cadena. The result ensures Pericas will head into Sunday’s final stage in second place overall, just 31 seconds down on the race lead of Nairo Quintana (Movistar).

Reflecting on his performance after the race, Baroncini spoke with delight at his improving shape and second-place finish on Saturday afternoon.

Baroncini: “For sure it was not an easy race, especially for me. There was a long, hard climb, and 3,200m of elevation today. In the past days I had a really good feeling and this gave me confidence, so I was already happy with that, because you see the race I had until now, this is exactly what I was looking for.

“Today, the plan was to go all in for the victory, because if I could pass all the climbs then the finish was perfect for me. The team was perfect, they made a super good job to control from the second part of the race.

“Unluckily, Edgar David Cadena went full gas on the last climb and it was not easy to go with him. Me and Pericas were in a super small group behind, and nobody wanted to pull with us. It is a bit of a shame because the victory would have been possible with my good sprint, but we will go all in tomorrow to try again.”

The race: Matteo Sobrero (Lidl-Trek) & Alexandre Balmer (Solution Tech Nippo Rali) did not start.

The NU Colombia team withdrew from the 2026 Vuelta Asturias ahead of stage 2 following the tragic death of their rider, Cristian Camilo Muñoz. Muñoz passed away on Friday, April 24, 2026, due to a severe infection resulting from a knee injury sustained in a crash at the Tour du Jura

Here's the report from second-place Adria Pericas' UAE Team Emirates-XRG:

On stage 2 of the Vuelta Asturias between Llanes and Pola de Lena, Adrià Pericas rode to second place for UAE Team Emirates-XRG. The young Spaniard was beaten only by the experienced Nairo Quintana (Movistar), with the two climbers now occupying the top two spots in the general classification.

For Pericas, the result is his best of the season, with the 19-year-old settling into his first season as a professional with the Emirati squad. The Spaniard now sits just 31 seconds down on the race lead of Quintana, who claimed the 52nd victory of his career on stage 2.

Over the many climbs of the second stage, Quintana and Pericas emerged as the strongest riders in the race, and spent a considerable amount of time together off the front. It was only late on in the day that Quintana kicked on and left Pericas behind, but the UAE Team Emirates-XRG neo-pro battled hard to limit his losses before the line.

With two stages still to come, Pericas is only 31 seconds down on the leader’s jersey, and holds a handsome margin to those chasing him from behind. Speaking after the finish of Friday’s stage, Pericas reflected on an afternoon spent in fine company.

Pericas: “It was a really hard race but the legs responded well. I went with Nairo [Quintana] and we worked well together until the last climb where he left me. But I was happy to be there in that company. The team raced really well, unfortunately Jasim had a crash but nothing too serious so we’ll fight on again tomorrow.”

Gabriel Layrac on his way to winning the stage.

Tour de France: 2020

Weather at the finish city of Benia de Onís at 2:40 PM, local time: 18C (65F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Gabriel Layrac's Team AVC Aix Provence Dole.

Just one week after Bohémond Barrillot’s strong performance at the Tour du Loir-et-Cher, the riders from AVCA Provence Dole have done it again—this time, at an even higher level. At the conclusion of Stage 1 of the Tour of Asturias, covering the 155 km route between Oviedo and Benia de Onis, three riders from Aix found themselves in the day’s decisive breakaway—a group of about ten riders—with 30 km remaining to the finish line. The final mountain pass did nothing to disrupt the impressive control demonstrated by the Aix trio, comprising Adam Smith, Gabriel Layrac, and Mark Lightfoot.

Gabriel Layrac—just 19 years old and the third-place finisher at the recent South PACA Championships—claimed a brilliant sprint victory, finishing ahead of the German rider Miguel Heidemann and the local favorite, the Spaniard Samuel Fernández. Two other riders from Aix also feature high in the provisional general classification: Adam Smith (5th) and Mark Lightfoot (9th). AVCA Provence Dole has seized the provisional lead in the team classification ahead of Stage 2—the second of four stages in this Spanish tour—running 140 km between Llanes and Pola de Lena.
