Volta a Catalunya stage six reports

We posted the report from the race organizer with the results.

Here's the report from stage winner and GC leader Jonas Vingegaard's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Jonas Vingegaard delivered an impressive performance to win Stage six of the Volta a Catalunya. The Dane dropped his rivals on the final climb before soloing to victory. With this win, Vingegaard secured Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s eighth victory of the season following a strong team effort.

“I’m very happy to take another win,” Vingegaard said afterward. “The goal was to go for the victory again today. As a team, we did a really great job throughout the entire stage, and it’s very rewarding to be able to finish it off for the team.”

Jonas Vingegaard has again left the best of the rest behind.

Starting the stage in the leader’s jersey, the Dutch squad approached Stage six attentively. Bart Lemmen made his presence known by joining a large breakaway group of fifteen riders, who ultimately did not play a decisive role in the fight for the stage win.

On the demanding Coll de Pradell, the peloton was significantly reduced under the pace of Team Visma | Lease a Bike. Jørgen Nordhagen impressed with a strong pull at the front, leading a select group into the final phase of the stage.

On the final climb, Vingegaard once again showed his strong form. With three kilometers to go, he attacked from the group of favorites and went on to solo to his fifth victory of the season.

With the general classification in mind, the Dane now turns his focus to the final stage of the Spanish stage race, where he aims to carry his leader’s jersey across the finish line. “Tomorrow might not be a stage that suits me perfectly, but if I get the chance to go for the win, I’ll definitely take it. Still, the main goal is to secure the overall victory.”

Here's the Tour of Catalonia stage six report from second-place Lenny Martinez's Team Bahrain Victorious:

Lenny Martinez delivered a strong ride on Stage 6 of the Volta a Catalunya, finishing second on the summit finish in Queralt, backing up yesterday’s third place, behind stage winner Jonas Vingegaard (VISMA), with Florian Lipowitz (RED BULL BORA) third. The 159 km stage from Berga to Queralt featured a long circuit before the final climb, setting up a selective finale.

The decisive move came in the final kilometers on the climb to Queralt, where Vingegaard attacked. Martinez was still there with the front group when he suffered a front-wheel puncture with just over two kilometers to go. Despite the issue, he managed to limit the damage and hold on to second place on the stage.

“The race was really hard from the start. Afonso did a super good job and we managed to open a gap, which was nice. On the last climb I had a flat tire in the final two kilometers, so it was really difficult to follow. I don’t really know how I managed to hold on and finish like that. I’m happy with the result.”

With this result, Martinez moves up to second overall in the general classification and retains the best young rider jersey ahead of the final stage in Barcelona.

Here's the Tour of Catalonia report from fourth-place Valentin Paret-Peintre's Team Soudal quick-Step:

Valentin Paret-Peintre continued his strong ride at the World Tour event, and for the second day in a row, was part of the select group from where the stage winner emerged on the last summit finish of the race.

A 158.2km route taking in four classified ascents and an elevation gain of 3500 meters was what the riders had to face on Saturday, when the climbers got another big opportunity. It was on the Coll de Pradell, the hardest difficulty of the day, that the peloton caught most of the riders who were part of the breakaway, including Andrea Raccagni. Already reduced to 30-odd riders, the GC group disintegrated on Collada de Sant Isidre, where Valentin Paret-Peintre was among the best, climbing with ease and securing a place in the small six-man group that formed just before the top.

In the valley, they continued to extend their margin over the chasers and remained together until 2.5 kilometers to go, at which point race leader Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) attacked and soloed to victory. Fifth on Coll de Pal, Soudal Quick-Step’s 25-year-old pushed a steady rhythm and finished just outside the podium, only a couple of seconds from the top three. This result helped him surge to fourth overall ahead of the final day, which will take the peloton several times over the Montjuic climb in Barcelona.

“The group split first on the climb, and then on the downhill, where we went full gas. Once we arrived on the slopes of Queralt, I tried to give everything but without going into the red. I’m content with gaining a place on the standings and I will try to defend this position, but also see what is possible to do on Sunday”, said Valentin, who is now on the verge of taking his best ever GC result in a World Tour race.

Here's the Tour of Catalonia report from Rudy Molard's Team Groupama-FDJ United:

The second mountain stage of the Volta a Catalunya once again caused significant damage this Saturday on the way to Queralt. Before the final showdown, Rudy Molard made it into the breakaway but was caught by the peloton on the day’s main difficulty, the Coll de Pradell. On that climb, David Gaudu showed promising form, which he maintained all the way to the finish, where he placed fourteenth. The race will conclude tomorrow in Barcelona.

2026 Tour of Catalonia stage six gets its offical start.

For the second consecutive day, nearly 4,000 metres of elevation gain had to be tackled this Saturday in Catalonia. From Berga to Queralt, the peloton faced four categorized climbs, including the Coll de Pradell (14.5 km at 7%) around the midpoint of the stage, followed by the Collada de Sant Isidre (5 km at 8%) and the final ascent to Queralt (6 km at 7%). A decisive battle for the general classification was expected, but first there was the fight for the breakaway, which was highly sought after on Saturday.

“We knew it had little chance of going all the way given the big favorites who are here, but it was a way for us to have an impact on the race and achieve a result through it,” explained Stéphane Goubert. “Everyone contributed. You can tell so as the start was very fast, a split formed, and we had the entire team in the first peloton. It shows the riders were focused and committed, but the breakaway was still not easy to get into, and it was Rudy who managed to catch the right group.” After about thirty kilometres, the French rider broke away with fourteen others, including Richard Carapaz, Giulio Ciccone, Marc Soler, and Nairo Quintana.

However, their lead was held at around two minutes by the peloton, which also significantly increased the pace on the Coll de Pradell.

This ultimately spelled the end of Molard’s effort near the summit. “Rudy had stomach issues during the stage and couldn’t fight to the end,” Stéphane added. “For Guillaume, it was already difficult yesterday, and he felt even worse today. He needs race rhythm after his training camp to get back to his usual level.”

The French climber had to drop earlier than hoped, but David Gaudu came over the top of the climb within a reduced peloton of around twenty men. Many riders re-joined on the descent, but when the pace picked up again on the Collada de Sant Isidre, the Breton once again proved himself among the fifteen strongest of the day. In the end, he was just one kilometre short of staying with the dozen remaining favorites. “He was a bit less affected by his back today, so he felt better and rode a good stage,” Stéphane emphasized. At the finish, he secured fourteenth place. “It’s not a top 10, and he’s not competing with the very best, but it’s a step forward,” Stéphane added. “We need to continue in this direction and completely resolve this issue, because David mainly needs to have fun again.”

On Sunday, the Volta a Catalunya will conclude with the usual stage around Montjuïc. “We’ll have to play to our strengths,” Stéphane concluded. “In the quieter phases of the circuit, if there are any, we might try to anticipate, or ride defensively and hope for a sprint. Rudy has already performed well on this stage”.

Mads Pedersen to miss In Flanders Fields (Gent-Wevelgem)

Here’s the team’s news:

Defending champion Mads Pedersen will not start In Flanders Fields (formerly known as Gent-Wevelgem) on Sunday due to illness.

The three-time winner recently returned to competition following his recovery from a broken wrist, racing Milano-Sanremo and yesterday’s E3 Saxo Classic, where the wrist came through without issue on the cobbles. However, with illness affecting his condition, the team and rider have agreed that rest is the right call. The plan is for Mads to recover fully in time for Dwars door Vlaanderen, Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix.

Mads Pedersen wins the 2025 Gent-Wevelgem.

Despite Mads’ absence, Lidl-Trek will still be targeting the top step of the podium with a strong team, including last year’s third-place finisher Jonathan Milan.
