Weather at the finish city of San Benedetto del Tronto at 1:20 PM, local time: 16C (61F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 19 km/hr (12 mph). There is a 7% chance of rain, rising to 15% at 4:00 PM.

The stage: A relatively straightforward opening phase followed by an entirely flat final 80 km. The race starts along the Adriatic coast before heading inland up the Aso valley from Pedaso to climb to Montefiore d’Aso. After a short descent, the final gentle climb to Ripatransone is tackled. A long descent leads to Grottammare before entering a 15 km finishing circuit to be covered five times. The circuit is mainly on wide, straight, well-paved roads.

Final kilometers: The final 3 km run along broad, mostly straight roads, with a few sweeping bends in the first section. A final double bend comes around 1 km from the finish. The carriageway is 8 meters wide, on tarmac.

The race: Andreas Kron (Uno-X Mobility) did not start.

Here's the race organizer's stage seven summary:

For the first time in the history of the race, the new King of the Two Seas is Mexican. Isaac Del Toro has won Tirreno Adriatico 2026, doing so with the authority of a rider who, at just 22 years of age, already has 26 professional victories to his name, more than Tadej Pogačar had at the same age. Joining him on the podium are Matteo Jorgenson, the third American ever to achieve this feat, and Giulio Pellizzari.

The final heart-stopping sprint went to Jonathan Milan (Lidl Trek), who once again imposed his law on the finish line in San Benedetto del Tronto. Second place went to Sam Welsford (Ineos Grenadiers), with Laurenz Rex (Soudal Quick Step) finishing third.

Many thought it would be a parade stage… but it did not quite turn out that way. At first it seemed so, with the harmless breakaway of Xabier Azparren (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Roberto Carlos González (Solution Tech NIPPO Rali) and Dries De Bondt (Jayco AlUla) stretching their lead to four minutes. Then, on the climb of Ripatransone, Alpecin Premier Tech lit things up, or rather Mathieu Van der Poel, who treated the final stage like a personal training session ahead of Milano Sanremo and began driving the pace at full gas.

It looked like an effort aimed at dropping the sprinters and setting up his teammate Jasper Philipsen, but that was not the case, because the peloton inevitably thinned out and even Philipsen was distanced. Around thirty riders remained at the front, while a large chasing group formed behind with all the sprinters, except Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Intermarché), who was even further back. Van der Poel, with all the GC contenders on his wheel, continued his personal show until the San Benedetto del Tronto circuit, when Ineos Grenadiers managed to bring everything back together, ending Mathieu’s relentless effort after more than 30 kilometers of furious pacing.

The Visma | Lease a bike-led peloton approaches the intermediate sprint, won by Matteo Jorgenson (Visma | Lease a Bike)

At that point Visma | Lease a Bike took control, leading the peloton towards the intermediate sprint at the third passage over the line. Perfectly led out by Wout Van Aert, Matteo Jorgenson won the sprint, collected three bonus seconds and moved ahead of Pellizzari into second place overall.

From then on nothing could prevent the expected bunch sprint, although the late move from Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno X Mobility), only reeled in inside the final kilometer, caused a few anxious moments. With 2 km to go there was also a crash involving Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick Step) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Premier Tech), but not Milan, who was guided perfectly into position by Edward Theuns in the final 400 metres before finishing the job with one of his trademark, unstoppable sprints.

For Milan it is a third consecutive victory in San Benedetto del Tronto, his fifth career win at Tirreno Adriatico and his sixth of the season, making him, for now, the most successful rider of the year together with Remco Evenepoel.

Weather at the finish city of Camerino at 2:10 PM, local time: 13C (56F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south-southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is just a 3% chance of rain.

The stage: A very hilly and demanding stage packed with climbs. Around halfway through, the riders tackle the ascent of Sassotetto (Valico di Santa Maria Maddalena). The race then reaches Camerino via the eastern side of the city before entering a 29.1 km finishing circuit to be covered twice. The circuit is extremely tough, featuring repeated ups and downs around Crispiero. After the turnaround in Castelraimondo, the road rises gradually toward the final 3 km on the Madonna delle Carceri wall, with gradients reaching up to 18%. The finish is located in the town center at the top of the third ascent.

Final kilometers: The final kilometers consist of the Madonna delle Carceri wall, already climbed twice earlier, this time without passing under the finish line, as the route deviates about 250 meters beforehand. The climb is very steep, with pitches up to 20% at the beginning and end. With 350 meters to go, riders enter a paved stone section that continues to the finish, where the gradients ease slightly. Final straight on stone paving.

The race: Corbin Strong (NSN Cycling Team) did not start.

Here's the race organizer's stage six summary:

If after yesterday’s stage Isaac Del Toro already had one hand on the Trident trophy, after today he has both. The impressive Mexican claimed Stage 6 of Tirreno Adriatico 2026 with the tough uphill finish in Camerino, resisting his rivals’ attacks before delivering the decisive move near the line.

Second place went to an excellent Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility), third to Matteo Jorgenson (Visma | Lease a Bike), and fourth to a generous Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull–Bora–hansgrohe). The Italian was loudly cheered by the home crowd and tried to put Del Toro – his neighbor in San Marino – under pressure, but in the end had to yield to the strength of his rival. By just one second, however, he managed to defend second place in the general classification from Jorgenson’s attack.

Once again there was fierce fighting to get into the breakaway. After about 40 km, at the foot of the Sassotetto climb, a group of seven riders went clear: Gregor Mühlberger (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Vincenzo Albanese (EF Education–EasyPost), Clément Braz Afonso (Groupama–FDJ), Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers), Walter Calzoni (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), Timo Kielich (Visma | Lease a Bike) and Guillermo Thomas Silva (XDS Astana). Timo Kielich crossed first at Sassotetto, but the spotlight later shifted to Gregor Mühlberger and Clément Braz Afonso, who dropped the other breakaway riders on the first ascent of the Muro della Madonna delle Carceri with 60 km to go, remaining alone at the front until 7 km from the finish.

In the peloton Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor) made an initial selection at the entrance to the final circuit, but the main contenders waited for the finale before making their moves. The only rider to try something earlier was Richard Carapaz (EF Education–EasyPost), who opened a gap of up to 1’20”, before fading on the flatter sections linking the two climbs in Camerino.

Everything was ultimately decided in the final 3 km. Wout Van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike) was the first to attack, followed by Ben Healy (EF Education–EasyPost), but it was Giulio Pellizzari who sent the home crowd into a frenzy. The rider from Marche went all in, catching and dropping Healy, but behind him Isaac Del Toro played a calculated game, launching his move near the last kilometer and closing the gap within a few pedal strokes. Matteo Jorgenson tried one last acceleration, Pellizzari cracked, but the UAE leader stayed glued to the wheel and surged past near the finish.

It is the first-ever victory by a Mexican rider at Tirreno Adriatico, and the 25th professional win for Del Toro in just two and a half years (at the same age, Tadej Pogačar had 17). Tomorrow’s final stage from Civitanova Marche to San Benedetto del Tronto should end in a sprint, and Del Toro is now poised to take home the Trident trophy.

Friday, March 13: Stage 5, Marotta-Mandolfo - Mombaroccio, 184 km

Stage 5 map & profile | Stage 5 photos

Michael Valgren wins stage five. RCS photo

Weather at the finish city of Mombaroccio at 1:35 PM, local time: 13C (55F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 35% chance of rain.

The stage: A very hilly stage dotted with numerous climbs of varying difficulty—at least ten in total, some classified as KOMs. From Marotta the route passes through Mondolfo and tackles a series of climbs around the Metauro River, including Villa del Monte and Monterolo, before ascending Monte delle Cesane, whose opening kilometers pitch up to around 15%. After passing through Saltara and Cartoceto, the race reaches Mombaroccio and enters a 21.6 km finishing circuit to be covered twice. The circuit features continuous rolling terrain and the very demanding climb to the Santuario del Beato Sante. The final summit comes 1,500 meters from the finish, followed by a final 300-metre uphill drag to the line.

Final kilometers: The closing kilometers are partly downhill and then uphill (around 7%) from roughly 500 meters to the finish on tarmac.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage five summary.

Two generations, seemingly ages apart, took center stage in Stage 5 of Tirreno Adriatico 2026. Michael Valgren, 34, took stage win in Mombaroccio, while Isaac Del Toro, 11 years younger, reclaimed the Maglia Azzurra as leader of the general classification. Riders from two different eras of cycling, celebrating together on the same day.

The Dane, who had not won in 1,639 days, was the protagonist of a superb breakaway launched in the early phase of the stage and managed to hold off the returning favorites by just a handful of seconds after the climb to the Santuario del Beato Sante, which led to the finish. On the final ascent, Isaac Del Toro and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma | Lease a Bike) managed to make the difference – putting 19 seconds into the Maglia Azzurra Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull–Bora–hansgrohe) – and came close to reopening the fight for the stage win.

Endless ups and downs toward Mombaroccio
Up and down, up and down, up and down… Stage 5 gave the riders no chance to breathe, with 3,900 meters of elevation gain spread across a dozen short climbs and sharp ramps in the province of Pesaro. After 35 km, a breakaway formed with Edward Planckaert, Emiel Verstrynge (Alpecin–Premier Tech), Joan Bou (Caja Rural–Seguros RGA), Jack Haig (Ineos Grenadiers), Georg Zimmermann (Lotto), Michael Valgren (EF Education–EasyPost), Sjoerd Bax (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) and Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor), with the Frenchman holding the virtual Maglia Azzurra for a long stretch (he started the day 1’20” behind Giulio Pellizzari).

The peloton allowed the move to develop and only began to increase the pace on Monte della Mattera, just over 40 km from the finish, led as usual by UAE Team Emirates–XRG. Despite the constant climbs and descents in the final 21.6 km circuit in Mombaroccio, the bunch remained about 30 riders strong, with Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) and Wout Van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike) the only major names to lose contact.

At the front, Valgren and Alaphilippe made the difference on the penultimate lap, but the Dane had an extra gear and dropped the former world champion on the final ascent of the Santuario del Beato Sante (4.2 km at 6.2%). The decisive moves also came on that last climb in the peloton: after a tentative acceleration from Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility),Del Toro attacked once, twice, three times, eventually breaking clear with Matteo Jorgenson on his wheel, while behindPellizzari had to limit the damage alongside teammate Primoz Roglič.

Michael Valgren – a former winner of both Amstel Gold Race and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad -crossed the line in Mombaroccio with his arms raised, ending a four-and-a-half-year winless streak, while Isaac Del Toro takes a big step toward the Trident trophy. Before the final verdict, however, there is still another brutal stage across the Marche walls, from San Severino Marche to Camerino, over 188 km.

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 2: 1971 - 2011 is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Martinsicuro at 1:40 PM, local time: 61F (16C), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east-northeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is an 11% chance of rain, rising to 35% at 3:00 PM.

The stage: The stage opens with two classic Apennine climbs – Ovindoli and the Valico delle Capannelle – followed by a long descent follows toward Teramo. The finale consists of a succession of steep climbs and short, sharp “walls”. The riders tackle Castellalto (with gradients around 12% for extended sections), Mosciano Sant’Angelo, and, 12 km from the finish, the Tortoreto wall via Badetta, which ramps up to 20% in its final section. A short descent precedes approximately 8 km along the seafront to the finish.

Final kilometers: The final kilometers are flat and straight along the Martinsicuro seafront. Finish on 8-meter-wide tarmac.

The race: Speaking seconds after the finish, the stage winner Mathieu Van der Poel said: “It was quite a hard day with a strong breakaway. The pace was really high all day. In the end, Visma did a really good job. I could gamble a bit because I already won my stage. I just waited for the sprint and I think I did everything perfectly in the last kilometer. I was expecting a late attack from Filippo Ganna. I also knew Visma was going to take a sprint with Wout [van Aert]. I just tried to react immediately on everything. I launched my sprint a bit too early maybe. With the headwind it was quite far away from the finish line. Luckily I managed to get it to the line. It was a flat sprint but everything that came before was not so flat. It was a hard day. I’m really happy to finish it off. I’m in a good shape”.

Here's the race organizer's stage four summary:

Two out of two! We were looking for confirmation and we got it: Mathieu Van der Poel is in Sanremo form. The Dutch rider from Alpecin–Premier Tech also wins Stage 4 of Tirreno Adriatico 2026, taking the sprint from a group of 14 riders that went clear on the Tortoreto via Badetta ramp, 12 kilometers from the finish.

The cyclocross world champion’s sprint was emphatic, helped by a strong headwind that left most of his rivals struggling. Not him, and not Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull–Bora–hansgrohe) either, who delivered the smartest sprint despite being among riders much faster than him. He stayed sheltered and emerged late to take second place. With the 6 seconds of bonus time, the rider from Marche moves ahead of Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates–XRG) in the general classification and takes the Maglia Azzurra. Third place in the sprint for a very strong Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility).

The unstable weather had the riders taking their rain capes on and off. RCS Sport photo

In today’s stage the breakaway was tempting for many. A lot of riders tried, but in the end twelve managed to go clear: Tibor Del Grosso (Alpecin–Premier Tech), Jakub Otruba (Caja Rural–Seguros RGA), Rémy Rochas (Groupama–FDJ), Liam Slock (Lotto), Iván García Cortina (Movistar), Laurenz Rex (Soudal–QuickStep), Dries De Bondt (Jayco AlUla), Mattia Gaffuri (Picnic PostNL), Diego Pablo Sevilla (Polti VisitMalta), Timo Kielich (Visma | Lease a Bike), Larry Warbasse (Tudor) and Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility).

Maglia Verde holder Diego Pablo Sevilla took the KOM points on the climbs of Ovindoli and Valico delle Capannelle (15 points), while the Castellalto KOM went to Rémy Rochas. That’s where the action started among the breakaway riders, with the Czech Jakub Otruba the most aggressive, managing to go clear just before the intermediate sprint in Mosciano Sant’Angelo.

However, UAE Team Emirates–XRG controlled the race throughout the day and were clinical in bringing things back together at the foot of the decisive Tortoreto ramp (1.6 km at 8.4%). There, Visma | Lease a Bike took command, with Matteo Jorgenson forcing the pace and shattering the peloton, while Isaac Del Toro tested his rivals on the way to the KOM, with Mathieu Van der Poel sitting fresh on the wheel.

At the front remained Mathieu Van der Poel, Ben Healy, Filippo Ganna, Giulio Ciccone, Alessandro Pinarello, Primož Roglič, Giulio Pellizzari, Andrea Vendrame, Wout Van Aert, Matteo Jorgenson, Isaac Del Toro, Jan Christen, Tobias Johannessen and Clément Champoussin. For several kilometers they watched each other, studying their rivals and trying to force a move with short attacks and accelerations. No one managed to make the difference, so they entered the final kilometer still together: Jan Christen tried to anticipate but was shut down by Wout Van Aert, then Filippo Ganna launched an attempt only to be closed by Andrea Vendrame, and that’s when Mathieu Van der Poel unleashed his unstoppable sprint.

Mathieu van der Poel is by far the day's fastest sprinter.

Van der Poel, second victory this week
It was his second victory of the week, and also a big celebration for Giulio Pellizzari, who takes the Maglia Azzurra ahead of the two stages on his home Marche climbs.

Tomorrow brings one of the most anticipated stages of this Tirreno Adriatico: Marotta–Mondolfo to Mombaroccio, featuring the double ascent of the Santuario del Beato Sante, a climb expected to cause major gaps in the general classification.

Wednesday, March 11: Stage 3, Cortona - Magliano dé Marsi, 221 km

Tobias Lund Andresen wins stage three. Sirotti photo

Weather at the finish city of Magliano dé Marsi at 1:50 PM, local time: 13C (55F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 14 km/hr (9 mph). There is a 45% chance of rain. It was raining at the start.

The stage: A very long and slightly undulating stage unfolding over a succession of gentle rises and dips, including sections around Todi and the Marmore area. A fast finale gradually uphill over the final 15 km leads to the finishing straight (around 3%).

Final kilometers: The closing kilometres are flat and virtually straight. After entering Magliano de’ Marsi, the road drags slightly uphill (around 2%) to the finishing straight on tarmac.

The race: the race organizer's stage three summary.

He may not have been the top favourite, but Tobias Lund Andresen (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) shows he has taken a step forward this season and wins Stage 3 of the Tirreno Adriatico 2026. After 221 kilometers raced largely in the rain, the Danish rider proved the most composed, sharp and powerful in the sprint, taking a fairly clear victory ahead of Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Intermarché) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Premier Tech).

A difficult day for Jonathan Milan (Lidl Trek), who ends up exposed to the wind too early, launches his sprint from a long way out but doesn’t have the legs to hold off his rivals, eventually finishing 7th. No problems instead for Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates XRG), who remains safely in the blue jersey and even picks up one bonus second at the intermediate sprint in Casette.

The peloton 50 kms into the stage.

It cannot be said that today’s stage was particularly explosive. Light rain and the 221 flat kilometers did little to encourage aggressive racing. The only rider to go up the road was Diego Pablo Sevilla (Polti VisitMalta), but after taking the KOM in Todi and securing the chance to step onto the podium in Magliano de’ Marsi to wear the green jersey, he sat up with 130 kilometers still to go.

The stage then rolled along without much happening, at a steady average speed of 38 km/h, until the final 25 kilometers, when Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility), Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quick-Step) and Liam Slock (Lotto Intermarché) tried for a few kilometers to surprise the peloton, only to be brought back with 20 km to go. Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale were the most precise team in setting up the finale, with Jonathan Milan forced to open his sprint from a long way out before being overtaken by Tobias Lund Andresen, Jasper Philipsen, and then the rest of the field.

For the Danish rider it is the tenth victory of his professional career, the third this season after his WorldTour successes at the Tour Down Under and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. Could this be the breakthrough of a new top sprinter?

Weather at the finish city of San Gimignano at 1:50 PM, local time: 62C (17C), rain shower, with the wind from the southwest at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is a 30% chance of the rain continuing, rising to 44% at 4:00 PM. Late in the race rain did fall on the riders.

The stage: A complex stage, particularly in the second half. The race starts in Camaiore and, via Montemagno, reaches Pisa and then the Livorno area before leaving the coast near Cecina to head inland toward Pomarance. The climb from the Cerreto road features stretches in double-digit gradients. The route continues with the ascent to Castelnuovo Val di Cecina and a sequence of rolling terrain leading to a 5.3 km gravel sector on the outskirts of San Gimignano. The sterrato is predominantly uphill with some very steep ramps. The finish is in the town center, with a short sharp kick at 15% at the entrance to San Gimignano.

Final kilometers: The last kilometer is partly on gravel and then on fairly steep uphill tarmac (up to 15%). After passing through the city walls (Porta San Matteo), the surface turns to cobbles, still uphill, all the way to the finish.

The race: Lennert van Eetvelt (Lotto-Intermarché) did not start. The Belgian crashed at Strade Bianche and struggled a lot in yesterday’s time trial. As a precaution, the team decided to stop him to allow for a full recovery.

Here's the race organizer's stage two summary:

“Let the dust rise”. Once again. Just a few days after Strade Bianche, Stage 2 of the Tirreno Adriatico 2026 served up another taste of gravel drama. Nothing comparable to Saturday’s great classic, of course, but a single 5.3 km sector placed close to the finish was enough to produce a thrilling and brutal finale.

In the end it was Mathieu van der Poel who took the victory in San Gimignano, and the Dutch off-road specialist certainly knows his way around the gravel. Still, it was far from an easy day for him, as he had to dig deep to beat Isaac Del Toro and Giulio Pellizzari in the sprint after the trio had gone clear on the gravel sector. The Mexican rider also becomes the new race leader, as Filippo Ganna struggled with the explosive finale and finished 1’04” behind the leading trio.

The race was animated early by Manuele Tarozzi (Bardiani CSF 7 Saber), Joan Bou (Caja Rural–Seguros RGA), Alessandro Iacchi (Solution Tech Nippo Rali) and Diego Pablo Sevilla (Polti VisitMalta), with the latter taking the KOM at Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, the first mountain prize of this edition of the race.

The peloton, however, kept everything firmly under control and reeled in the break with 25 kilometres to go, just as the first drops of rain began to fall. The already tricky finale quickly became even more dangerous, and tension rose sharply ahead of the gravel sector.

As soon as the riders hit the white roads, now damp and slippery, Julian Alaphilippe launched the first attack, but it was when Mathieu van der Poel raised the pace that the race truly exploded. Glued to the Dutchman’s wheel were Isaac Del Toro, Giulio Pellizzari and Matteo Jorgenson of Visma | Lease a Bike, but the American rider slipped and crashed just as he was following Van der Poel. That forced Del Toro and Pellizzari to chase back across to the cyclocross world champion, while behind Filippo Ganna was dropped and the cyclamen jersey of Thymen Arensman hit the ground in another crash.

When they emerged from the gravel sector, three riders remained out front: Van der Poel, Pellizzari and Del Toro. The Mexican rider had the overall classification in mind and refused to take turns, staying on the front throughout the final uphill drag into the centre of San Gimignano. On the cobbled run-in Pellizzari tried to anticipate the sprint, but Van der Poel was not caught out and, right on the limit, managed to throw his wheel ahead on the line, with Del Toro coming very close to a comeback despite pulling for the final two kilometres.

Mathieu van der Poel wins a very close one. Sirotti photo

All the other favourites finished together in a group at 17 seconds, except Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal–QuickStep) who lost 35 seconds, Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates XRG), Jai Hindley (Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe) and Michael Storer (Tudor) who conceded 57 seconds, and Thymen Arensman (Ineos Grenadiers), who crashed and finished 1’38” down.

Monday, March 9: Stage 1, Lido di Camaiore 11.5 km individual time trial

Italian time trial champion Filippo Ganna wins stage one. Sirotti photo

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 2: 1976 - 2018 is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the race city of Lido di Camaiore at 1:50 PM, local time: 18C (65F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: An individual time trial featuring two virtually straight sectors run out and back along the same carriageway, separated by a turnaround. The course heads straight for 5.0 km to the U-turn at Marina di Pietrasanta, where the intermediate time check is taken. Riders then cover 5.3 km back toward Lido di Camaiore, where an S-bend leads into the final kilometre.

Final kilometers: The last 3 km are flat, heading south along a long straight. With 1,200 metres to go, the only technical feature appears: a right–left S-bend on a narrowed carriageway, leading onto the final 1 km finishing straight. Finish on 6.5-metre-wide tarmac.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and GC leader Filippo Gannba's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Filippo Ganna made it a perfect start to Tirreno-Adriatico with a commanding victory in the opening stage time trial.

The Italian TT champion set a blistering time of 12 minutes and eight seconds across the 11.5-kilometre course in Lido di Camaiore, moving into the early race lead.

That effort was enough for victory by 22 seconds over teammate Thymen Arensman. The Dutchman was happy to hand over the hot seat to his fellow Grenadier on a day which saw him put key time into his GC rivals.

Magnus Sheffield came within four tenths of making it a 1-2-3 on the day, eventually setting the fourth fastest time and claiming the white young rider's jersey.

After the stage Ganna said: "It's stage win number five for me in Tirreno and every time is special and complicated to do my best. It's never easy. Today in the middle of the stage I didn't feel good, but I kept on chasing.

"Yesterday I was just focused on today. Tonight we will recover well and then tomorrow I will check the stage finish of tomorrow. I came here to Tirreno without the ambition to [target] the GC, just to do an amazing Tirreno and have the feeling for the Classics. This is a good starting point and now we'll see in the next few days what we can do in the race."
