Weather at the start/finish city of Nice at 1:20 PM, local time: 15C (58F), cloudy, with the wind from the north-northeast at 26 km/hr (16 mph). There is just a 5% chance of rain.

Rated ascents:

  • Km 50.7: Col de la Porte, 7 km @ 7.2%. Cat. 1
  • Km 83.2: Côte de Chateauneuf-Villevieille, 6.7 km @ 6.6%. Cat. 1
  • Km 110.7: Côte du Linguador, 3.3 km @ 8.8%. Cat. 1

The stage: Due to the municipal elections taking place this week-end in France, Paris-Nice moves away from its traditional finish on the Promenade des Anglais and relocates its grand finale to the Allianz Riviera, home to today’s start and finish.

The race: 104 riders signed on ahead of the final stage. Ewen Costiou (Groupama-FDJ), Guillaume Boivin (NSN), Cees Bol, Callum Scotson (Decathlon CMA CGM), Alex Kirsch (Cofidis), and Joshua Giddings (Lotto Intermarché) did not start.

Two Danes on the start line: GC leader Jonas Vingegaard and Casper Pedersen. Pedersen, second in the moutains classification to Vingegaard, is wearing the mountains jersey because Vingegaard who is also the best climber of course, wears the yellow jersey.

Here's the organizer's stage eight summary:

A year after crashing out of Paris-Nice 2025, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) claimed emphatic revenge in the 84th edition of the Race to the Sun, concluded on Sunday at the Allianz Riviera stadium. The Danish star had to settle for second place on the day, behind Bahrain Victorious’ Lenny Martinez - the only rider able to follow him on the final climb of the race and the first French winner of the final stage since Arthur Vichot in 2014 -, but he increased his margin in the overall standings to historic proportions. His gap of 4’23’’ to Dani Martinez (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) is the biggest recorded between winner and runner-up of Paris-Nice since 1939 and the fourth biggest in the history of the race.

Vingegaard also secured the polka-dot jersey, as the winner of the KOM standings, and took the green jersey, as the winner of the points standings. Third in the overall standings, Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost) also stepped on the podium to receive the best young rider’s white jersey.

Stage eight gets its official start.

The race:

The riders are in Nice, but it doesn’t mean they’re done with the 84th edition of the Race to the Sun! Stage 8 sees the peloton take on a 129.2km loop starting and finishing at the Allianz Riviera stadium. The day is packed with climbing (2,300m of elevation gain), with three cat.1 ascents including the unprecedented Côte du Linguador (3.3km at 8.8%, with gradients up to 14%) to enter the last 20 kilometres of the stage.

All out from the start
The final battle starts frantically, as many attackers want to seize their last opportunity to shine. Fabio Van den Bossche (Soudal Quick-Step), Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis), Matteo Trentin (Tudor), Alexandre Delettre (TotalEnergies) and Tim Marsman (Alpecin-Premier Tech) get away at km 9. But the peloton drive a strong chase.

The gap never gets higher than 1’15’’ (km 21) and it drops down as the road rises towards the Col de la Porte (cat. 1, summit at km 50.7). Both the peloton and the breakaway explode on the ascent, and the race situation is totally reconfigured.

The peloton about 37 kilometers into the stage with five breakaway riders about 20 seconds ahead.

Paret-Peintre’s solo
After he bridged the gap to the early attackers, Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step) attacks 6 kilometres away from the Col de la Porte. At the summit, the French climber is 25’’ ahead of Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates XRG). Visma-Lease a Bike drive a reduced peloton with a gap of 45’’.

Paret-Peintre keeps pushing on the downhill, while Marc Soler is caught by the bunch as they get back on the valley. The French climber begins the ascent of the second categorised climb of the day, Côte de Châteauneuf-Villevieille, with a lead of 45’’.

Martinez vs Vingegaard
Ineos Grenadiers up the ante to try and propel Kevin Vauquelin to the overall podium. On the ascent, Dani Martinez (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) is involuntarily taken down by a teammate. The Colombian is in pain but he gets back on his bike and starts chasing 1’30’’ behind his GC rivals. At the front, Ineos Grenadiers and then Visma-Lease a Bike maintain a strong pace. Paret-Peintre is eventually reeled in just before the final climb.

Lenny Martinez just beats Jonas Vingegaard for the stage win.

Victor Campenaerts (Visma-Lease a Bike) sets a brutal pace to launch Vingegaard’s attack 21 kilometres from the finish. Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) manages to follow the Dane all the way to the summit (18.5km to go). The duo collaborate until the final kilometre, where the French youngster narrowly edges his Danish rival. Vingegaard is the overall winner of Paris-Nice 2026.

Stage 7 profile

Dorian Godon wins stage seven.

Sticky Buns Across America

Les Woodland's book Sticky Buns Across America: Back-roads biking from sea to shining sea is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Isola at 1:50 PM, local time: 3C (37F), snow, with the wind from the south at 8 km/hr (5 mph). The snow is forecast to end at 4:00 PM.

Rated ascents:

  • Km 14.8: Côte de Carros, 7 km @ 5.1%. Cat. 2
  • Km 24.4: Côte de Bouyon, 1.7 km @ 6.1%. Cat. 3

The stage: March 14: To avoid the sections made dangerous by rain in the first part of the route, riders will be transferred in their team buses to a new start location on the Louis Nucéra bridge, at Le Broc. After a 2.5 kilometre transfer, the official start will be given at kilometre 73 of the original route. The finish line remains in Isola-Village, at the end of a route now reduced to 43.4 kilometres.

The time cut is pushed to 25% of the winner's time, compared with the originally scheduled 15%. There will be a 3 km sprint zone at the end of the stage. The stage was scheduled to start at 1:45 PM but the real start was given at 2:00 PM.

March 13th: The organizers of Paris-Nice have been closely monitoring the weather conditions in the Alpes-Maritimes department throughout the week. The latest forecasts make an arrival in the Auron resort inconceivable, with the rain-snow line estimated to be around 1,100 meters altitude. To ensure riders' safety, the decision to modify the route for stage 7 was made in agreement with the city of Nice, the Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur, the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture, the municipalities of Auron and Isola, and in consultation with the panel of commissaires from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), as well as representatives of the teams (A.I.G.C.P) and riders (C.P.A).

The finish of stage 7 will therefore take place in Isola, where the intermediate sprint was already scheduled, as the weather conditions do not allow the finish to be moved to another mountain top. The stage distance is reduced to the first 120.4 kilometres of the originally planned route.

The race: The following riders did not start stage 7 of Paris-Nice 2026: Tim van Dijke (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Nikias Arndt (Bahrain Victorious), Pascal Eenkhoorn (Soudal Quick-Step), Max Kanter (XDS Astana), Petr Kelemen (Tudor), Timo Roosen (Picnic PostNL), Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost), Sven Erik Bystrom (Uno-X Mobility), Aime De Gendt, Frederik Frison (Pinarello-Q36.5), Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies), and Milan Menten (Lotto Intermarché).
110 riders have signed on during the team presentation on the Promenade des Anglais.

Here's the race organizer's stage seven summary:

Dorian Godon made the most of a shortened stage 7 of Paris-Nice 2026 to take his first victory with Ineos Grenadiers. The French national champion unleashed his raw power on the uphill finish in Isola, after 47 kilometres on a route redesigned due to the harsh weather conditions, with snow at altitude and heavy rains in the valley. Biniam Girmay (NSN) and Cees Bol (Decathlon CMA CGM) complete the day’s top 3. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) survived another day with the leader’s yellow and white jersey and heads into the final stage around Nice with a strong margin on Dani Martinez (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost).

The stage gets its official start.

As the peloton of the Race to the Sun head into the final weekend of this 84th edition, the weather conditions are not favourable, so much so that the course has to be adapted. Originally scheduled to reach the Auron ski resort, at an altitude of 1,614 metres, the stage is set to finish in Isola-Village. The start is also moved to Le Broc, making it a 47-kilometre route on the eve of the final stage in Nice. 110 riders sign on during the team presentation on the Promenade des Anglais before getting on the team buses to reach the new start.

As soon as the flag drops, Visma-Lease a Bike drive the bunch. Victor Campenaerts, Bruno Armirail, Edoardo Affini and Wilco Kelderman take turns at the front, while Axel Zingle follows Jonas Vingegaard’s wheel. After a dozen kilometres of racing, Tim Marsman (Alpecin-Premier Tech) sets off.

The tall Dutchman pushes his advantage to a maximum of 15 kilometres, halfway through the stage, before being reeled in by the bunch just inside the last 10 kilometres. Nicolya Vinokurov (XDS Astana) counter-attacks with 7 kilometres to go but he’s rapidly reeled in as the peloton set a bunch sprint in Isola.

The peloton with 3 km to go.

A couple of crashes disrupt the finale, but not the Ineos Grenadiers train. French national champion Dorian Godon takes off inside the last 200 metres and powers to his first victory with the British team, ahead of Biniam Girmay (NSN) and Cees Bol (Decathlon CMA CGM).

The race: “Ivan Romeo will not start today’s stage after having had a bad night with stomach discomfort”, Movistar reported on social media. A stage winner in last year’s Critérium du Dauphiné (now Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), the young Spanish national champion was competing in his second Paris-Nice. Oscar Onley (Ineos Grenadiers), Julien Bernard (Lidl-Trek) and Rick Pluimers (Tudor) also didn't start. Early in the stage Niklas Märkl abandoned.

Here's the race organizer's stage six summary:

Already 3rd in Colombier-le-Vieux, Harold Tejada showed his punch, skills, and grit to take victory in Apt, the finish of stage 6 of Paris–Nice 2026. The Colombian made the most of a hilly and thrilling finale with a counter-attack over the top of the Côte de Saignon, summited just inside the final 5 kilometres. The shattered peloton reacted too late, and Tejada flew to XDS Astana’s second victory this week after Max Kanter conquered Montargis on stage 2.

In his wake, French national champion Dorian Godon (Ineos Grenadiers) was the fastest from the bunch to take second ahead of Lewis Askey (NSN). Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) safely navigated the day’s challenges to retain the leader’s yellow and white jersey ahead of the final weekend around Nice.

After Jonas Vingegaard’s dominant performances to claim victory in Uchon and Colombier-le-Vieux, the 84th edition of the Race to the Sun heads to Apt with a 179.3km hilly stage starting in Barbentane. The peloton face 2,100m of elevation, with a series of ascents capped off by the cat-2 Côte de Saignon, to be summited inside the last 5 kilometres. 125 riders start after Oscar Onley (Ineos Grenadiers), Ivan Romeo (Movistar), Julien Bernard (Lidl Trek), and Rick Pluimers (Tudor) withdraw from the race.

Tarling emerges from a big battle for the break
Attackers want to make it another hard day. It takes 42 kilometres of battle for a four-man breakaway to set off with Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers), Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates XRG), Staff Cras (Soudal Quick-Step), and Arthur Kluckers (Tudor). Counter-attackers try to join them but Biniam Girmay’s NSN and Bryan Coquard’s Cofidis control them.

Early in the stage.

Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) is tasked with driving the peloton. The pace remains strong and the gap never gets higher than 2’10’’ just before the ascent up the Côte de Bonnieux, reached after 2 hours of racing at almost 49 km/h.

Full on battle
The peloton accelerate towards the last climbs of the day, the cat. 2 ascents of Col de l’Aire Deï Masco (summited with 33.2 km remaining) and Côte de Saignon (4.5km to go). The gap is down to 1’20’’ at the bottom of the first of these two ascents.

As the situation settles on the climb, Soren Kragh Andersen (Lidl Trek) sets off in pursuit with 37 km remaining. At the Col de l’Aire Deï Masco, he trails by 30’’. The peloton are 20’’ further behind.

Igor Arrieta goes hard on the downhill. Cras is dropped and rapidly caught by Kragh Andersen. The duo fail to bridge the gap and eventually sit up to wait for the bunch.

Tejada finds the opening
The gap increases to 1’20’’ again, into the last 20 kilometres. But Lidl-Trek react and drive a strong chase with Kragh Andersen, Jakob Söderqvist and Lennard Kämna. The gap drops down to 25’’ at the bottom of the final climb of the day.

Arrieta and Tarling up the ante and push their advantage to 35’’… But Victor Campenaerts (Visma-Lease a Bike) takes the reins of the bunch. The lead duo are caught as Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) attacks just before the summit.

The French climber’s move is nullified, but Harold Tejada (XDS Astana) counter-attacks and rapidly opens a gap of 10’’. The Colombian flies on the downhill and eventually takes the biggest win of his career 6’’ ahead of Dorian Godon (Ineos Grenadiers), the fastest in a bunch where Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) safely retained the leader’s yellow and white jersey.

Jonas Vingegaard will start stage seven in yellow.

Stage 5 profile

Jonas Vingegaard solos across the finish line 2min 2sec ahead of his nearest chaser.

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Weather at the finish city of Colombier-le-Vieux at 1:35 PM, local time: 13C (56F), fair, with the wind from the north at 19 km/hr (12 mph). No rain is forecast for the afternoon.

Rated ascents:

  • Km 63.7: Côte de Lenyilly, 2.3 km @ 4.7%. Cat. 3
  • Km 106.7: Côte de Trèves, 2.3 km @ 6%. Cat. 3
  • Km 172.8: Côde de Sécheras, 3.9 km @ 7%. Cat. 2
  • Km 186.4: Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, 2.2 km @ 11%. Cat. 1
  • Km 197.2: Côte de Saint-Barthélémy-le-Plain, 3.2 km @ 7.6%. Cat. 2

The race: Casper Van Uden (Picnic-PostNL) was ill and did not start. Toms Skujins (Lidl-Trek) & Pascal Ackermann (Jayco ALUla) also did not start. That left 135 starters.

Early in the stage Pavel Sivakov (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Luke Durbridge (Jayco AlUla), & David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ United) abandoned.

Here's the race organizer's stage five summary:

What a contrast from 2025 to 2026 for Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike)! Last year, the Danish star took the yellow and white jersey on day 4 before crashing on the Côte de Trèves the next day and eventually abandoning the Race to the Sun.

This time, on the day after his victory in Uchon, he safely went over the same climb before putting the hammer down on the steepest gradients of the day. Untouchable on the Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, Vingegaard covered the last 21 kilometres on his own to take his second consecutive stage win - with gaps over two minutes - and significantly increase his lead in the overall standings. Dani Martinez (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) now trails by 3’22’’, ahead of EF Education-EasyPost’s Georg Steinhauser (+5’50’’) and Ineos Grenadiers’ Kevin Vauquelin (+6’09’’).

Stage 5 gets its official start.

After an eventful day 4 that turned the race upside down on the roads of the Morvan, the Race to the Sun continues with a 206.3 km stage between Cormoranche-sur-Saône and Colombier-le-Vieux. With relentless ups and downs and gradients reaching 16%, the riders face 2,950 metres of elevation gain — the highest figure of this edition.

A massive battle for the break
Attackers are inspired by the challenges of the day, furthermore after many teams lost all their GC hopes on Wednesday. A flurry of attacks animates the first part of the race but riders fail to open differences on flat terrain.

Fifty kilometers into the stage and still no break has been able to stay away

Eventually, a distinguished climber of the calibre of Aleksandr Vlasov (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) accelerates on the cat. 3 ascent of the Côte de Lentilly. He goes first over the top (km 63.7) and presses on afterwards.

Four riders join him to make the first break of the day at km 70: Joshua Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers), Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ United), Jefferson Cepeda (Movistar) and Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon CMA CGM).

5 + 3 = 8 leaders
Behind them, Jonas Vingegaard’s Visma-Lease a Bike try to restore order in the bunch and control the gap at around 1’40’’. The pace is hard, too hard for David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), who was 5th in the overall standings but is forced to abandon.

As the race hits the second ascent of the day, the Côte de Trèves (summit at km 106.7), Movistar’s Ivan Romeo and Lorenzo Milesi set off in pursuit. Victor Campenaerts (Visma-Lease a Bike) follows their move.

The three counter-attackers join the five leaders with 90 km remaining. Visma-Lease a Bike drive the bunch and the gap never gets higher than 2’05’’ (66 km to go). It drops to 1 minute at the bottom of the Côte de Sécheras, the first of three steep kickers inside the last 35 km.

70 kilometers to go. A break of eight - Victor Campenaerts (Visma-Lease a Bike), Aleksandr Vlasov (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Joshua Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers), Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ United), Ivan Romeo, Jefferson Cepeda, Lorenzo Milesi (Movistar), and Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon CMA CGM) is 1min 50sec ahead of the pack.

Vingegaard in his own world
The breakaway explodes, with Cepeda going solo at the front. Vlasov and Prodhomme try to chase him while the rest are swallowed by the bunch, including Tarling and Campenaerts, who bring more firepower to Ineos Grenadiers and Visma-Lease a Bike. The two teams work together to get back to Cepeda on the first slopes up the mighty Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Muzols (2.2km at 11% with gradients reaching 16%).

Jonas Vingegaard attacks with 1 kilometre remaining. Nobody can follow the overall leader of the race. Seven riders emerge in pursuit: Dani Martinez (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost), Kevin Vauquelin (Ineos Grenadiers), Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious), Mathys Rondel (Tudor), Harold Tejada (XDS Astana), and Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step).

For the second stage in a row Jonas Vingegaard has left everyone else behind. This stage, by more than two minutes. Incredible.

While Vingegaard safely rides to victory in Colombier-le-Vieux, Paret-Peintre attacks over the top of the final climb of the day, Côte de Saint-Barthélémy-le-Plain. The Frenchman eventually takes 2nd place (+2'02''), ahead of Harold Tejada (+2'20'') and the rest of the chasers.

Stage 4 of Paris-Nice 2026 featured the first proper climbing challenges of the 84th edition of the Race to the Sun, but fierce action unleashed well before the ascents of the day! A rainy and windy day produced echelons as soon as the flag dropped in Bourges, 195 km away from the finish. Spending his first day with the yellow and white jersey, Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) was in prime position to defend his overall lead until he got caught in a crash with 47 km to go and forced to abandon.

A wet start to the stage.

Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe drove the front of the race for Dani Martinez, and only Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) managed to stick to their wheel. The Dane eventually put the hammer down for the final kilometre to the Uchon finish, with gradients up to 16%, and went on to take his first Paris-Nice stage win, as well as the leader’s yellow and white jersey. This is the eighth consecutive edition with a Danish stage win, but they’ve yet to win overall.

Following Tuesday’s team time trial and Juan Ayuso’s rise to power, the peloton face the first real climbing challenges of Paris-Nice 2026 with 2,520 metres of elevation en route to a cat-1 summit finish in Uchon.

Riders warm up at high intensities ahead of the start. Is it because of the rain? Because they anticipate a hard battle for the break? Or are they wary of the 20-30 km/h winds (with gusts up to 45km/h) blowing from the south (crosswinds)?

Echelons from the gun
Riders stand on their pedals as soon as the flag drops. Less than 5 kilometres into the stage, splits already appear. Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) is up there, as well as Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), Oscar Onley (Ineos Grenadiers), and Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates XRG). Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe are also in force, with four teammates (Denz, Thornley, Van Dijke x2) along with Dani Martinez.

The echelons say this is both a windy and wet day in France.

Second in the overall standings, Kevin Vauquelin (Ineos Grenadiers) is in a third split that rapidly gets back to the second group, featuring Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) and Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates XRG). A fierce battle ensues, with the gap oscillating between 55’’ and 1’40’’ at the bottom of the Côte de la Croix des Cerisiers (km 127).

Ayuso on the ground
Kevin Vauquelin and Lenny Martinez drive the chase on the ascent, bringing the gap down to 45’’. Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe up the ante on wet roads. And Ayuso hits the deck on the downhill with 47 kilometres to go. The Spaniard tries to resume racing but he is injured and needs to stop. Brandon McNulty is also involved, and the group explodes.

Soon, only five riders remain at the front: Dani Martinez with three teammates (Denz, Van Dijke x2), and Vingegaard. They push their advantage on the ascent of the Côte de la Croix de la Libération (4.6km at 5.3%). Behind them, Tarling paces Onley, who had to change bikes on the downhill due to a previous crash at km 85, but the gap rapidly increases.

Vingegaard at the summit
The Ineos Grenadiers duo eventually wait for their first chasers, including Vauquelin, who bridges the gap along with Lenny Martinez 16 km away from the finish. At that point, they trail by 2’40’’.

The final climb begins with 8 km to go. The slope is very irregular, with the maximum gradients (16%) to be hit in the final kilometre. Mick van Dijke is spent with 6.5 km to go. His brother Tim sets the pace all the way to the flamme rouge.

As the road rises dramatically, Vingegaard unleashes his power and takes off to his first Paris-Nice stage win, 41’’ ahead of Martinez. The Dane also takes the leader’s jersey with a gap of 52’’ to his Colombian rival. Fifth on the day, Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost) completes the GC top 3 (+3’20’’), ahead of Vauquelin (+3’39’’).

Here's another shot of Jonas Vingegaard finishing the stage.

On Thursday the 12th the race organizer posted this update: Yesterday’s stage was marked by a crash that took Juan Ayuso out of the race with 47 remaining. The Spaniard tried to resume racing but rapidly had to give up and lie down with significant pain on his left thigh. His team Lidl Trek then shared comforting news: “Fortunately X-rays performed at the hospital in France did not reveal any fractures. A further clinical assessment performed by the Team doctor on-site at the Team hotel has also ruled out any other serious injuries. Juan will continue to monitored by the Team’s medical staff & another update will be provided only if necessary.”

Involved in the same crash, Brandon McNulty “suffered abrasions and an injury to his left knee and was unable to continue”, UAE Team Emirates XRG doctor Adrian Rotunno reported. “He will travel home for a rest period under the supervision of team medical staff.”

Ten more riders abandoned for varied reasons yesterday: Davide Piganzoli, Mathijs Paasschens, Robert Stannard, Pablo Castrillo, Raul Garcia Pierna, Bert Van Lerberghe, Daan Hoole, Luka Mezgec, Torstein Træen, and Lindsay De Vylder.

Weather at the finish town of Pouilly-sur-Loire at 1:45 PM, local time: 15C (59F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is a 12% chance of rain, rising to 24% at 5:00 PM.

The race: First team off was Picnic-PostNL at 3:10 PM.

Here's the organizer's stage three summary:

The team time trial on day 3 of Paris–Nice 2026 produced an exhilarating battle for stage victory in Pouilly-sur-Loire and for the top places in the overall standings. Ineos Grenadiers made the most of their power and tactics to dominate the 23.5 km course, propelling Kévin Vauquelin to the finish in 26’40’’ (52.9 km/h). Oscar Onley crossed the line just one second behind, while Lidl–Trek’s Juan Ayuso finished two seconds back.

Having earned four bonus seconds on day 2, Ayuso is the new overall leader of Paris–Nice 2026, and will be the first Spaniard to wear the yellow-and-white jersey since Luis Leon Sánchez in 2018, a year that eventually saw Marc Soler turn the race upside down on the final day. The GC battle is now well and truly on, and it will continue Wednesday with a brutal summit finish in Uchon.

After two thrilling sprint finales dominated by Luke Lamperti and Max Kanter, the GC battle for Paris-Nice 2026 is set to begin with today’s team time trial from Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire to Pouilly-sur-Loire (23.5km).

The event uses a format tried and tested on the roads of Paris-Nice, which will also serve as an opener to the Tour de France 2026, in Barcelona. The organisers revamped a traditional exercise, mixing collective performance and individual brilliance for a more tactical battle.

The stage standings are established with the time of each team’s best rider. For the general classification, riders who finish with the first rider from their team will be credited with the same times. Others will have their own time. It’s all about which team can best propel their leader to a strong time at the finish.

Early times
Picnic PostNL are the first on course, rapidly followed by Jayco AlUla, who set the first benchmark at the finish: 27’37’’ (51.0km/h). But the Australian team is overtaken by Groupama-FDJ United, who complete the course at an average speed of 51.5 km/h.

Stage three is on with Team Picnic-PostNL's start.

It’s not enough to hold off the last two riders from UAE Team Emirates XRG, Brandon McNulty and Marc Soler, who finish as a duo with an advantage of 4 seconds. However, their performance is not enough to repeat the feat of 2024, when the American took the leader's jersey at the end of the team time trial in Auxerre.

Hoole’s solo effort
The Visma-Lease a Bike armada is expected to put on a show and is well positioned to do so, improving on the UAE's time by 21 seconds. The Dutch team finish with four riders, led by Jonas Vingegaard alongside Bruno Armirail, Davide Piganzoli and Victor Campenaerts.

Their performance is promising, but they are unable to match that of Decathlon-CMA CGM, who set the best intermediate time at km 14, seem to fall apart at the end of the course but count on Daan Hoole, who is clearly strong and confident. The Dutch champion rides solo for the last five kilometres, and still manages to beat Visma by 4 seconds. All this after an attempted attack in the final stretch of Montargis, which failed in the last kilometre!

Here's GC leader Luke Lamperti's Team EF Education-EasyPost in a perfect, tight line.

Ayuso vs Grenadiers
Hoole’s impressive effort is not enough to resist Lidl-Trek. The American team makes the most of his many powerhouses - Mathias Vacek, Soren Kragh Andersen, Jakob Söderqvist… - to propel Juan Ayuso to the finish with a time of 26’42’’, 9 seconds ahead of Decathlon CMA CGM.

Lidl-Trek impressed collectively, but so do Ineos Grenadiers. The British team are 13’’ faster than their USA rivals at km 14. The gap decreases in the second part, and Kevin Vauquelin eventually clocks a time of 26’40’’, with Oscar Onley on his wheel. That’s enough to take the stage. But not for the yellow and white jersey, as Ayuso earned four bonus seconds on stage 2! The Spaniard is the overall leader ahead of the climbing challenges of Paris-Nice 2026.

The race: Here's the organizer's stage two summary.

Celebrated for its spectacular sprint finishes, Montargis crowned Max Kanter (XDS Astana) on day 2 of Paris-Nice 2026. The German sprinter powered to his biggest victory to date as he got the better of Laurence Pithie (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), already second in the same place two years ago. Jasper Stuyven (Soudal Quick-Step) rounded out the podium after a thrilling finale. Daan Hoole (Decathlon CMA CGM) launched a daring attack with 21 km remaining, only to be caught inside the last kilometre. Luke Lamperti (EF Education-EasyPost) completed the stage’s top 5 and retained the yellow and white leader’s jersey with the tightest margin; Vito Braet (Lotto Intermarché) is now level on time. The standings will be turned upside down on Wednesday with a team time trial set to kick off the GC battle between Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire and Pouilly-sur-Loire.

On the day after Luke Lamperti’s opening win in the Yvelines department, the peloton of the 84th edition of the Race to the Sun heads south, to reach Montargis with a 187 km stage 2 from Épône. They face 1,270m of elevation, with three cat-3 climbs and a flat run-in to a potential bunch sprint. The area is often windswept but the weather forecast announces moderate winds, with speeds around 10km/h.

The day's early break about 18 km into the stage: Casper Pedersen, Mathis Leberre, & Mattéo Vercher. They were all caught with 59 kilometers to go.

Pedersen vs Le Berre, round 2
Jasha Sütterlin (Jayco AlUla) attacks as soon as the flag drops. After 7 kilometres of hard racing, he’s joined at the front by the polka dot jersey wearer Casper Pedersen (Soudal Quick-Step), his runner-up in the KOM standings Mathis Le Berre (TotalEnergies), as well as Matteo Vercher (TotalEnergies too). The four-man breakaway rapidly loses a member, as Sütterlin drops back to the peloton after 12 km.

Already on the move on day 1, Pedersen and Le Berre resume their battle for the KOM points. The Dane has a 1-point advantage as they face the first climb of the day, Côte des Mesnuls (km 30.3). And he makes the most of this first opportunity as he goes first over the top (3 points), ahead of Le Berre (2) and Vercher (1), who waits for the bunch after the summit.

Luke Lamperti’s EF Education-EasyPost and Biniam Girmay’s NSN are already in action at the front of the peloton to control the gap. The lead duo’s advantage hits a maximum of 2’25’’ at km 45.

Pedersen and Le Berre work together on the valley and battle on the ascents. The Dane makes the most of his strength to also go first  up Côte de Villeconin (km 81) and Côte du Pressoir (km 113,4). His tally is up to 18 KOM points, compared to Le Berre’s 14.

A thrilling finale
After the last summit, Lotto Intermarché up the ante to catch the breakaway riders before the intermediate sprint in Fromont (46.1km to go). Pedersen and Le Berre are eventually caught just inside the last 60 kilometres, after 119 kilometres at the front.

A dozen kilometres later, Vito Braet (Lotto Intermarché) dominates the intermediate sprint ahead of Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) and Luke Lamperti (EF Education-EasyPost). With the bonus seconds up for grabs (6, 4, and 2), the Belgian sprinter is level on time with the American overall leader. Ayuso trails by 8’’, like Pedersen and Orluis Alar (Movistar). The rest of the field have a gap of at least 12’’. The winner of the stage will take 10 bonus seconds.

The run-in to Montargis is disrupted by a crash with 34 km to go. Sprinters like Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious), Cees Bol (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Sandy Dujardin (TotalEnergies) are involved. They all get back to the bunch. With Bol affected by the crash, his lead-out man Daan Hoole attacks with 21 km to go. He rapidly opens a gap of 30’’, before Movistar react at the front the bunch.

Tudor, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe and EF Education-EasyPost also participate in the chase. Hoole is eventually caught inside the last kilometre! Mike Teunissen (XDS Astana) then powers to the front to lead Max Kanter, who takes his biggest win to date ahead of Laurence Pithie (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Jasper Stuyven (Soudal Quick-Step). Luke Lamperti (EF Education-EasyPost) completes the top 5 and retains the leader’s jersey.

The race: Kelland O'Brien (Jayco AlUla) abandoned just after the stage started.

Here's the race organizer's stage one summary:

From 2025 to 2026, USA riders still rule Paris-Nice. Following Matteo Jorgenson and Magnus Sheffield’s triumph last year on the Promenade des Anglais, Luke Lamperti (EF Education-EasyPost) dominated the sprint at the end of stage 1 of the 84th edition of the Race to the Sun. The American youngster took his biggest win so far as he dominated Vito Braet (Lotto Intermarché) and Orluis Aular (Movistar) in Carrières-sous-Poissy, while Biniam Girmay (NSN) had to settle for 5th place. Lamperti will wear the yellow and white jersey as the first leader of Paris-Nice en route to Montargis, on Tuesday.

The 154-man peloton begin Paris-Nice 2026 under cloudy skies in Achères, but the sun rapidly appears to accompany the riders in this first stage of the 84th edition of the Race to the Sun (170.9km to Carrières-sous-Poissy). Kelland O’Brien (Jayco AlUla) doesn’t get to enjoy the favourable weather conditions as he abandons as soon as the race begins.

It's time to go racing in France. ASO photo

NSN and Picnic PostNL control the early break
The pace is high, with a handful of attacks and counter-attacks until a group of six riders emerge at km 7 with Casper Pedersen (Soudal-Quick Step), Luke Durbdridge, Patrick Gamper (Jayco AlUla), Max Walker (EF Education-EasyPost), Mathis Le Berre (TotalEnergies), and Sébastien Grignard (Lotto Intermarché).

Biniam Girmay’s NSN Cycling Team and Casper van Uden’s Picnic PostNL drive the bunch to control the gap. The attackers’ lead never gets higher than 1’45’’ at the halfway point. The peloton then pick up the pace as many teams are wary of the hilly and technical finale, with 4 cat-3 ascents.

30 kilometers into the stage Casper Pedersen (Soudal-Quick Step), Luke Durbdridge, Patrick Gamper (Jayco AlUla), Max Walker (EF Education-EasyPost), Mathis Le Berre (TotalEnergies) and Sébastien Grignard (Lotto Intermarché) are 1'10'' ahead of the peloton. After 70 kilometers of racing their lead was 1min 30sec. ASO photo

Pedersen chases the polka dots
Casper Pedersen dominates the first ascent of the day, up the Côte de Gargenville (63.4km to go). The Dane then controls Mathis Le Berre’s attack on the Côte de Vaux-sur-Seine (46.8km) to take 3 more KOM points.

The attackers get back together and push their lead back up to 1’40’’ as they enter the 16.6-km final circuit, to be covered twice in its entirety, with the mighty Côte de Chanteloup-les-Vignes (1.1km at 8.3%), formerly home to the Polymultipliée. Once again, Pedersen goes first at the summit to all but secure the polka-dot jersey.

The day's six-man break racing across France. 70 kilometers into the stage they have buit a 1min 30sec lead. ASO photo

Lamperti takes over
The gap is still up to 1’15’’ as the race enters the final lap. More teams collaborate at the front of the bunch and bring the gap down to 45’’ at the bottom of the final ascent up Côte de Chanteloup-les-Vignes. Le Berre attacks at the summit but the peloton only trail by 30’’.

With Visma-Lease a Bike’s Bruno Armirail driving a strong chase, the gap drops down to 10’’ with 5 km to go, and the attackers are eventually caught just inside the final 2 km. EF Education-EasyPost power to the front positions for the final kilometre… And USA's Luke Lamperti powers to his biggest career to date, following in the footsteps of Matteo Jorgenson and Magnus Sheffield, who ruled the Pormenade des Anglais on the final day of Paris-Nice 2026.

Route description:

Here's race organizer's explanation:

The route of Paris-Nice 2026 was unveiled this Wednesday [December 17, 2025] in Versailles, less than three months before the start of the 84th edition of "la Course au Soleil" (the Race to the Sun) in the Yvelines department. The peloton will set off on Sunday, March 8th from Achères, a first-time host city for the race, and will reach Nice one week later after overcoming the usual challenges: sprints, crosswinds, a team time trial, hills and major climbs.

Traditions will be shaken up during the final weekend due to the municipal elections. The Promenade des Anglais will host the start of Stage 7 on Saturday, March 14th, and the winner will be crowned the following day at the Riviera stadium. The question of who will succeed Matteo Jorgenson will be decided on this unprecedented route. The contest could feature riders such as Simon Yates (2nd in 2018 and 2022), João Almeida (6th in 2025), Juan Ayuso, Cian Uijtdebroeks, Mattias Skjelmose (4th in 2024), or among the French contenders Kévin Vauquelin, Lenny Martinez, and David Gaudu (2nd in 2023). On the stage-win front, Mads Pedersen, Olav Kooij, and Michael Matthews are already familiar with the route and will aim to repeat their successes.

The list of 22 selected teams has been revealed. In addition to the 18 WorldTour teams and the three highest-ranked ProTeams (Cofidis, Pinarello–Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, and Tudor Pro Cycling Team), the organisers have extended an invitation to TotalEnergies.

Almost every year, the Promenade des Anglais is where the peloton comes to warm up and launch its season. But in 2026, due to the municipal elections, the 84th edition of Paris-Nice will feature a new setting to crown the winner of the Race to the Sun: the rendezvous is at the Riviera stadium on Sunday, March 15th, after a week of efforts spent crossing the countryside, racing against the clock, overcoming elevation and battling for the yellow-and-white jersey won by Matteo Jorgenson in 2024 and 2025.

To defend his title, the Nice-based rider will line up on Sunday, March 8th in Achères, which becomes the 30th town in the Yvelines to host a stage of the Race to the Sun. The opening stage already promises early skirmishes, with a circuit finish around Carrières-sous-Poissy via the Côte de Chanteloup-les-Vignes, a landmark climb of the Polymultipliée. From the very next day, the peloton will cross the plains of the Gâtinais, an area well suited to crosswinds. Sprinters will be keen to shine between Épône and Montargis (Stage 2) before giving way to the general classification contenders.

With the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in Barcelona in mind, the “Nice-style” team time trial between Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire and Pouilly-sur-Loire (Stage 3) will provide a full-scale rehearsal: which team will best launch its leader into orbit? The riders will then head towards the roads of the Morvan, made famous by the 2021 Tour de France. This time, the climb of Uchon will not merely be included, it will determine the stage winner and possibly a new race leader.

The second half of this 84th Paris-Nice is packed with climbs, but the diversity of profiles reshuffles the deck day after day. Stage 5, the longest of the week, also features the greatest elevation gain, designed to wear down the riders on the way to Colombier-le-Vieux. The following day, a thriller is expected in Apt (Stage 6), with a final climb to be tackled within the last five kilometres.

For the Nice weekend, the peloton will indeed return to the Promenade des Anglais for the start of Stage 7, heading towards the resort of Auron, where Michael Storer delivered an outstanding performance in spring 2025. The following day, the final stage will loop around the Riviera stadium and explore new summits. The decisive showdown is expected on the brutal slopes of the Côte du Linguador. The scenery may change, but as every year in the Race to the Sun, only the very best will shine on the French Riviera.
