Giro dell'Appennino (1.1), Italy

Winners, distance, average speed

The Giro dell'Appennino (Tour of the Apennines) is a single-day professional road race held in Liguria and Piemonte, Italy.

First held in 1934, with the exception of the war years, it has been continuously held without interruption. In 1972 and 1989 the Giro dell'Appennino was also the Italian Road Championship.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s the Giro dell'Appennino was almost the private property of Giambattista Baronchelli, who won it six consectutive times (1977-1982).

Its traditional place on the calender was late in the season, August and September. In recent years it has bounced around from April to August to June and July. In 2014 it was held in late June.

Since 2005 the UCI has classed it 1.1 and made it part of the Europe Tour.
