Here’s the team’s announcement:
Jon Barrenetxea, Carlos Canal, Iván Romeo, Javi Romo and Pelayo Sánchez extend their agreements with Movistar Team until 2028.
In 2023, Iván Romeo (Valladolid, ESP; 2003) joined the ranks of Movistar Team as the youngest rider in the squad that season. At 19 years old, he made his debut with the Telefónica team and in August he won the 5th stage of the Tour de l’Avenir. Later, he closed the season with the silver medal at the European Under-23 Road Championships.
In 2024, Romeo made another leap forward with a brilliant start to the season at the AlUla Tour and closed the season in the best possible way with the title of Under-23 World Time Trial Champion in Zurich.
A progression that the protagonist tells us about in these statements and that has earned him a long-term contract with Movistar Team.

Iván Romeo:
"
I am very happy to renew my contract with the team for 4 more years. These last two seasons with Movistar Team have been a huge step forward for me and it is because the team has given me a lot of confidence from the beginning. Offering me the means and opportunities necessary to continue this evolution, without putting any pressure on me and helping me in every way possible.
"I know the direction in which I want to continue progressing and so does the team. It is the home team, which I have always dreamed of being part of and I am very grateful and available to help. I am really looking forward to the 2025 season, which I am preparing for with great affection."
Pelayo Sánchez (Oviedo, ESP; 2000) made his debut with the Movistar Team in January and did so in style, winning the Trofeo Pollença – Port d’Andratx in Mallorca.
The Oviedo native was taking part in his first Giro d'Italia and would once again make a splash. A prestigious victory in the 6th stage with a finish in Rapolano Terme and 2nd in the Sappada stage.
Pelayo Sánchez:
"I am very happy to announce the renewal with the team until 2028. From the first moment they welcomed me wonderfully and the truth is that I feel at home here. When the opportunity arose to extend my ties with them, I didn't have to think twice.
"For me, I think it is an ideal place to continue growing both as a cyclist and as a person. Surrounded by great professionals and many friends that I already have here. I hope to continue growing for many years in blue and continue giving joy to both the team and the fans."
In 2024, Jon Barrenetxea (Gámiz-Fica, ESP; 2000) touched the sky at the Getxo Circuit. The Biscayan would achieve his first victory in blue in his debut season with the Navarrese team.
His potential convinced Eusebio Unzué's team to also close a long-term agreement with Movistar Team.
Jon Barrenetxea:
"
I am very happy and grateful to be able to continue with Movistar Team until 2028. The adaptation this first year has been perfect, despite not being a very good season for me due to the fall I had in April at the Amstel Gold Race.
"I hope to repay on the road this trust placed in me. With such a good group we have, I'm sure joy will come and I will be able to contribute a lot to the team."
Carlos Canal (Xinzo de Limia, ESP; 2001) made his debut this season with Movistar Team and would achieve notable results throughout the course.
In his home race, O Gran Camiño, he finished 2nd in stage 3. And he would repeat in podium positions in the classification of the best young rider in Boucles de la Mayenne (3rd) and the Tour de Wallonie (2nd).
The 23-year-old from Orense has also earned a long-term renewal.
Carlos Canal:
"I am very happy with this renewal and being so long it gives you the peace of mind of continuing to grow in a team that has made me feel at home from day one. I feel very comfortable in this group of young riders that we have formed.
"I would like to thank the team for the trust they have placed in us and I am looking forward to continuing to work hard to improve and return the support they are giving us."
Javi Romo (Villafranca de los Caballeros, ESP; 1999) started the 2024 season as a new Movistar Team rider. A team in which he would also feel at home from day one.
The Toledo native made his debut this year in the Tour de France. Where he would obtain a remarkable 5th final position in the youth classification and would be 7th in the gravel stage in Troyes.
Finally, in September he would come close to the podium in Italy. 4th in the GP Industria & Artigianato in Larciano.
Javi Romo:
"This season has been super positive, maybe some things could have gone better, but it has been the year in which I have grown the most as a rider. Above all, coming to Movistar Team with a very familiar atmosphere, the home team and I am very happy with the staff, in general. This has been key to growing, as well as having a good calendar. Therefore, I am very happy to extend the contract, it means that the team trusts me in the long term and I have the potential to continue improving.
"In the coming years I hope to improve in grand tours, try to compete in stages and be valid to help our leader. Let's go for it!"
Here’s the team’s post:
One of the references of Team Polti Kometa in the race, one of the captains on the road who accumulates more than 10 seasons in the structure of the Alberto Contador Foundation, will continue one more year wearing the team’s Gsport kit in order to prolong his work as a leader and teacher of the youngest talent.
Diego Pablo Sevilla racing at the 2024 Vuelta a Biurgos
Despite his 28 years, Diego Pablo Sevilla is already a reference in cycling and above all a guide for Team Polti Kometa. His extensive experience, his reading of the race and his ability to be a protagonist, as he demonstrated this year in the Vuelta a Burgos or Circuito de Getxo, make him a fundamental part of the team, where he will continue to offer his quality in 2025.
‘It’s a real pleasure to continue with Team Polti Kometa for another year. Since 2013, I have known all the categories of the project and I feel that I have grown with it’, says Diego Pablo Sevilla. ‘Now for next year, my goal is to improve, to contribute to the team’s objectives but above all to enjoy cycling, which is my job and my passion.’
Sports director Jesús Hernández is full of praise for the cyclist from Madrid: ‘He is the example of a team rider, a reference for the younger riders. Every team needs a rider like Diego, who renounces personal glory to work generously towards the objectives of his team-mates. But he has also shown his ability to play his own cards when he is free, so for me it is a special satisfaction to be able to continue counting on him for 2025’.
