Flandriencross is held in the small town of Hamme in east Flandria, near the Dutch border. The race has been run since 2002, when it was called Bollekescross. The race was renamed in 2014 to honor Greg van Avermaet, who was born in Hamme has been name Flandrian of the Year several times.

The race's most successful competitor is Sven Nys, who won it seven times
