The race:
The 1937 Paris-Roubaix was 255 km long and raced and an average speed of 34.93 km/hr.
There were 159 starters and 50 classified finishers.
It was a wet day with hard rain.
Jules Rossi entered Roubaix with four Belgians, each individually ambitous to win and uninterested in coordinating their efforts against the Italian.
With two kilometers to go Rossi led at such an extraordinary speed the others could not even pull alongside. The race finished in Roubaix on Avenue Gustave Delory (not the velodrome) where Rossi led out the sprint and won by several bike lengths.
Rossi was the first Italian to win Paris-Roubaix, succeeding where Gaetoni Belloni, Costante Girardengo and Alfredo Binda had failed.
Jules Rossi enjoys his victory.
