There were 148 starters and 81 classified finishers.
Two-time Paris-Roubaix winner Henri Pélissier dominated the opening hours but failed to eat enough and suffered a terrible hunger knock and finished well back in tenth place.
After passing through the city of Arras Albert Dejonghe attacked and no one could stay with him.
Dejonghe was on song and easily won his biggest career victory.
