The race:
The Tour of Catalonia used to be one of the three important stage races in May and June, set between the Giro and the Tour. For many riders it was an important pre-Tour tune-up. The other important stage races still sitting between the Giro and the Tour are the Tour of Switzerland and the Dauphiné Libéré.
In 2005 the Tour of Catalonia was moved to May, where it conflicted with the Giro. For 2010 the race was moved to late March where it still meets up with a very busy calender, conflicting principally with the Coppi-Bartali stage race in Italy, Critérium International in France and E3 and Ghent-Wevelgem in Belgium.
It is the oldest currently run race in Spain and is second only to the Vuelta in prestige among Spanish races. The only stage races older than the Volta a Catalunya are the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia. Mariano Cañardo has won the Catalonian tour most often, with 7 victories.
