Here's the report from stage winner Andrea Bagioli's Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team:
Andrea Bagioli capped off a great week for Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl at the 101st edition of the prestigious World Tour race, notching up the victory in Barcelona from a select group at the end of an explosive 138km stage that took in six ascents of Montjuic – the decisive climb of the 1973 World Championships.
Despite being short, the hill played an important role, whittling down the peloton and inspiring several riders to try and go clear on the steepest part, just before the top. The last time up, seven men broke away and carried a good gap on the descent, but a lack of collaboration allowed the chasers, among whom was also Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s Italian, to bridge across.
As the regrouping took place with a whisker over one kilometer to go, Andrea moved through the field boldly and decisively, entering second wheel on the final stretch and kicking out in the final 100 meters to clinch the biggest success of his career so far and the Wolfpack’s 17th win this season.
“I wanted to try and fight for victory today, because the laps with that short and steep climb suited me. On top of that, I made sure of not going too hard in the last two days and keeping some energy for this stage, which was tough, with lots of attacks in the last two laps. On the final climb, I was dropped, but managed to come back on the descent just ahead of the flamme rouge and sprint for the win. I wasn’t sure of the victory, because I initially thought there were other riders in front, but seconds after crossing the line I was told by my team and couldn’t believe it.”
“This win, my first in a World Tour race, means a lot to me. It wasn’t the easiest start to the season, with a couple of setbacks, but I continued to believe in myself and the team supported me all the time. We had a good week here, with the wins brought by myself and Ethan, and these results will only feed our confidence for the next races”, said the first Italian in three years to win a stage at the Volta a Catalunya.

Weather at the finish town of Cambrils at 1:00 PM, local time: 11C (51F) and raining. The rain is forecast to end about 3:15 PM. The wind is from the north at 13 km/hr (8 mph).
Rated ascents:
The race: There were eight non-starters today: Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Urko Berrade (Kern Pharma), Mark Donovan (DSM), Valerio Conti (Astana), Michael Woods (Israel-Paemier Tech), David Dekker (Jumbo-Visma), Odd Christian Eiking & Neilson Powless (both EF Education).
That left 132 riders in the race. The stage began at 1:02 PM.
Here's the report from new GC leader Sergio Higuita's Bora-hansgrohe team:
The almost 167 km long route between Salou and Cambrils was quite demanding, featuring several climbs and around 2900 meters of elevation, with rainy weather making the race even more difficult. From the last summit, the parcours went downhill for over 30 kilometers until the finish. Right on the first steep climb of the day, the Coll de les Llebres, a group with several GC favourites broke away from the peloton.
The stage had a wet start. ASO photo
It didn't take long for Sergio Higuita and Richard Carapaz to successfully go clear from that group, and with 60km of racing left, the duo had carved out a 3:30 minute lead. Back in the chasing group, UAE Team Emirates took up the pace-setting to defend the white and green jersey, which was at that time virtually on the shoulders of the Colombian BORA - hansgrohe rider. At the end of a breakaway of about 120km, however, the duo was not to be reeled back and fought it out for the stage win in Cambrils. With his second place, 48 seconds ahead of the chasing group, Sergio took the lead in the overall classification as well as in the youth and mountain classifications.
"We knew that the break would have a good chance today. I started the decisive climb in a good position and was alert when Carapaz and his teammate Plapp made a move. Little by little, riders were dropped, and so finally it was just the two of us at the front. We worked well together. The group behind us tried hard to close the gap, but we knew how to save energy to make it to the finish line. In Cambrils I decided to launch my sprint 100 metres ahead of the line, but Carapaz was that extra bit stronger and won the stage. I'm very happy with my performance today, especially because I'm now going into the last day in the leader's jersey. But tomorrow will be an explosive stage, so we'll have to be ready for anything." - Sergio Higuita
"Our goal was to try to take the overall lead today. We planned an attack because we knew it would be difficult to bring back a leading group on the wet, narrow roads. To be honest, we had originally planned to make a move a little later in the race. But in the decisive part of the first climb there was a strong tailwind and so we changed our plan slightly and Sergio went clear there, together with Carapaz and Plapp. We then just tried to react according to the situation on the road. Then we got the message from behind that the overall leader Almeida was isolated. And then we thought we'd let Sergio continue with the goal of winning seconds in the first bonus sprint. But then when the time gap became three and a half minutes, we realised that with a bit of clever pacing we could actually achieve our goal. Sergio did an absolutely fantastic job. I also have to give a big compliment to our riders behind, who were ready in the chasing group to go on the attack in case it came back together. All in all, it was a very good day for us. Tomorrow we will try to win the GC and I think we have a good chance of doing so on the difficult city circuit in Barcelona, as Sergio really made the best impression from all the riders today." - Christian Pömer, Sporting Director

Rated ascent:
The race: 142 riders began today's stage, the longest one of this edition, at 12:21. There was one non-starter, Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal).
Here's the report from stage winner Ethan Vernon's Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team:
Ethan Vernon became the latest rider to take his first pro victory in the colors of Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, after a phenomenal sprint in Vilanova i la Geltrú, where the 206.3km stage 5 concluded. Having joined the Wolfpack ahead of this season, Vernon already showed his speed in several races, including this week on stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya, where he finished just off the podium.
On the longest day of this edition, which featured some climbs and rolling roads that didn’t make things easy for the sprinters, Ethan was helped to overcome these challenges by his fantastic teammates. The Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl boys worked hard to keep him out of the wind and in a good position in the chaotic last 20 kilometers, where the GC men also featured prominently, fighting for bonifications at the Panta de Foix intermediate sprint.
Despite some headwind on the finishing straight, Vernon measured the sprint perfectly and hit out first, 200 meters from the line, producing a spectacular acceleration and nudging past all of his opponents. So dominant was the 21-year-old Brit’s victory that he had plenty of time to celebrate his success, punching the air several times.
“I had the confidence in myself and knew I had the legs after stage 2, because I wasn’t that far off there despite making some mistakes. It was a fast stage today, with the GC riders splitting the field as they went for the intermediate sprint, but I managed to hang in there with the help of my team. This wouldn’t have been possible without them.”
“Coming into the season, I thought that a win in the second part of the year would be great, so that’s why doing it just three months since turning pro is brilliant, something I would have never dreamed of. I knew there was headwind at the finish, but I could maintain the speed despite opening up early and at 50 meters to go I began believing. To take my first pro victory with Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, and on World Tour level of all the places, is unbelievable.”

Stage 5 profile:

The race: Team BikeExchange-Jayco announced that Simon Yates feels unwell and will not start today's stage. Also not starting are Peter Serry, Cesare Benedetti, Corbin Strong, Jose Rojas & Romain Combaud. There are 146 riders left to start the fourth stage. The official start was given at 12:53 PM.
Here's the report from stage winner Joao Almeida's UAE Team Emirates:
Joao Almeida took his first victory in the colours of UAE Team Emirates, with a win on stage 4 of the Volta Catalunya.
Almeida out-sprinted the duo of Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) and Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) in the hilly finale, pushing the pace on from far out to drop the race leader Ben O’ Connor (Ag2r-Citroen) in the process.
It was an aggressive display again by the Emirati squad with Marc Soler infiltrating the early break and later George Bennett going clear on the final climb, forcing the other teams to chase.
Young Juan Ayuso finished closely behind the winner in 6th place, showing good form in his first ever World Tour stage race outing.
Almeida becomes the 10th different rider from UAE Team Emirates to taste victory this season with the overall win tally now up to 21.
The Portuguese now leads the young riders classification heading into stage 5 from La Pobla de Segur to Vilanova i la Geltrú (206.3km) and sits 2nd in GC behind Quintana at the same time as the Colombian.
Joao Almeida: “ I’m super happy. I’ve been working for this for a long time. Today I had some bad luck at the beginning but I felt really good at the end.
"I was always controlling my effort on the last climb, we had Bennett up the road so it was perfect for us behind as we just had to ride on the wheel. I upped the pace in the last couple of kilometres and sprinted to the victory. There are some hard stages coming up, especially the last one but we are happy with how it’s going for us.”
In Italy Marc Hirschi continued to show his strong return with 3rd place on stage 3 of Coppi & Bartali in San Marino (147km).
The Swiss went clear on the final climb with a duo of riders from Ineos-Grenadiers with Ben Tulett eventually prevailing.
Marc Hirschi: “It was really hard, as every day has been here at Coppi & Bartali. Myself and Polanc tried to make things difficult for the others on the last laps and then I attacked at the bottom of the last climb. I couldn’t get rid of the Ineos riders who were very strong. I’m happy with 3rd place but the other guys were just too good today.
"Overall I’m very happy – it’s a long time since I’ve felt so comfortable on the bike, maybe 2 or 3 years. For me it’s more enjoyable to ride like this and I know that getting the operation was the right thing to do.”

Stage 4 profile:
Wednesday, March 23: Stage 3, Perpinyà (Perpignan) - La Molina, 161.1 km
Ben O'Connor comes in alone and takes over the GC lead. Getty photo
Plato's dialogue Crito is available as an audiobook here. For the Kindle eBook version, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
The race:
Weather at the finish city of La Molina at 12:55 PM, local time: 4C (40F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 6 km/hr (4 mph). No rain is forecast.
Rated ascents:
The race: 159 riders were at the start. Michael Kwiatkowski (INEOS Grenadiers) did not sign in because of respiratory problems. The official start was given at 12:57 PM.
Winner Ben O'Cconnor's Ag2r-Citroën team posted this:
Ben O’Connor: “I was sick and I had to abandon Paris-Nice, which was one of my early season goals. I approached this week with confidence, though, because I knew that my form was there. Today, I did not expect to finish alone because I believed that other guys would be able to follow me. But I decided to try my luck in the finale and it worked. It was not necessarily a climb that suited me. I like the high mountains. I knew I had to be smart to follow those who would attack.
“I know that the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya is a tricky race but, with my teammates, I will try to keep this leader’s jersey until the end.”
The number: 2
After Marc Sarreau’s victory on Sunday in Cholet-Pays de Loire, Ben O’Connor’s victory is the second of the 2022 season for the AG2R CITROËN TEAM… and the second in three days.
The news: Eight stitches for Nans Peters
The victim of a crash 15 km from the finish on Tuesday in the second stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, Nans Peters hit his knee and required eight stitches. He is expected to return to training in the coming days.

The race: The official start to the race was given to the 162 riders at 12:15 PM. There was one non-starter (in addition to Sonny Colbrelli, who did finish stage one): Jack Haig, also of Bahrain Victorious.
Here's the latest report about Sonny Colbrelli, who fell unconscious just after yesterday's stage and was taken to the hospital, from his team Bahrain Victorious' Twitter account: "Sonny Colbrelli will undergo further tests today to discover the cause of yesterday’s incident. All cardiac tests carried out last night showed no signs of concern or compromised functions. After being admitted to Hospital Universitari de Girona Doctor Josep Trueta, Sonny Colbrelli was conscious and feeling okay. He has since been in touch with family and friends as he recovers at the hospital."
Around kilometer 150, Richie Porte (INEOS Grenadiers) abandoned. His team says he felt unwell during the stage.
Winner Kaden Groves' Team BikeExchange-Jayco team posted this stage two report:
Australian Kaden Groves made it a dream start for Team BikeExchange-Jayco at the Volta a Catalunya by claiming his first ever WorldTour victory, following a phenomenal leadout from yesterday’s stage winner Michael Matthews.
After a dramatic day that saw the team’s general classification hopeful Simon Yates crash at a crucial point in the race, Groves finally grabbed that elusive victory after five close-call podium finishes already in 2022.
It was a more routine start to the second day of racing as a three-rider breakaway formed and Team BikeExchange-Jayco assumed control at the front of the bunch. The pace eventually began to ramp up as the peloton passed over the third and final categorised climb, but it was on the flat run to the finish that the race burst into life.
With the threat of crosswinds looming, the battle for road position began and Yates was caught out in a crash with 15km to go. The recent Paris-Nice stage winner was quickly back underway with teammates around him, but with the peloton now split to pieces, it was a frantic chase to limit any time loses.
Meanwhile, Groves and Matthews delivered a masterclass in the leading group, with yesterday’s stage winner guiding his younger teammate into position inside the final kilometre. As Matthews swung off, Groves was glued to the wheel of Phil Bauhaus as the sprint opened up, with the 23-year-old timing his lunge to the line to perfection to take the win and make it back-to-back victories for the team.
Kaden Groves (1st):
“It was pretty tough actually [the run to the finish line], with some echelons splitting the bunch, but Michael and I were in the front and a lot of other strong teams like Movistar and Jumbo. We had Simon out the back and they were using that to their advantage to maybe put some time into him, so it was pretty full gas.
"The guys did such a great job all day riding in a good position and riding on the front, making sure the breakaway was close so it could be a sprint today, and also being in position for the corners before the crosswinds.
"I liked this stage, I picked this stage out to get the victory and I can’t believe I’ve got it and maybe later in the week we can have another sprint.”
Michael Matthews:
“It was a pretty stressful day actually, and I think after yesterday everyone sort of knew we had quite a strong team here, especially for the crosswind sections. We were riding at the front, but everyone was coming up and fighting all day, I think it was a more difficult day than we expected.
"We’ve been fighting for this for a long time, and to be a part of Kaden’s first WorldTour victory is something special. We were close on the last stage of Tirreno, but just fell short, and today we were able to pull it off. I think with me winning yesterday and being able to do a leadout in the leader’s jersey and my teammate winning, what more can we ask for?”

The race: 165 riders began the 101st Tour of Catalonia at 12:57 PM. A few minutes into the stage the riders were hit with their first splatters of rain.
With 30 kilometers to go, as the riders tackled the Alt de Romanya, the rain was quite heavy.
Here's the report from winner Michael Matthews' Team BikeExchange-Jayco:
Australian Michael Matthews powered back to winning ways with a stunning victory in a drag race sprint to the line, on a fast and hectic stage one of the Volta a Catalunya.
The 31-year-old backed up his strong fourth place finish at Milan-San Remo on Saturday by repeating his 2019 victory on the same finish in Sant Feliu de Guíxols after Team BikeExchange-Jayco split the race to pieces in the crosswinds.
There was no easing into the opening stage of this year’s race as the battle to get into the early breakaway resulted in gaps in the peloton in the opening kilometres. Eventually a group of six went away, but behind, Team BikeExchange-Jayco took control of the race as they dragged a group of 19 riders away and across to the escapees in the crosswinds.
The team were fully represented in the newly formed front split of 25, with Matthews and general classification contender Simon Yates both looking to take advantage of the carnage. However, with the larger peloton closing in, the team eased up as the bunch regrouped and attentions turned to the upcoming finale.
A late race break of six were eventually reeled in inside the final 10km, with Matthews sitting in prime position as the pack raced through the streets of Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Matthews bided his time inside the final kilometres as the road dragged up to the line, before launching a powerful sprint to streak away and take his first win of 2022.
Upon crossing the line, second placed finisher Sonny Cobrelli fell unconscious, but was later confirmed to be in a stable condition in hospital after receiving medical assistance.
Michael Matthews (1st):
“Firstly, I just want to say, I hope Sonny Colbrelli is ok. I found out after the finish what happened, it’s never nice to hear something like this after your victory and I’m wishing him a good recovery and I’m hoping he’s ok.
From our side, the team did a great job. We went straight to the front once the breakaway went and took the race under our control and split it in the crosswinds ourselves. Then once we got caught, we still committed to the final to deliver me into the best position for the final sprint and I was able to finish it off.
It’s been a long time without a victory for me now, so to come back to a finish that I knew well from a couple of years ago, to now win again, it means so much. My wife and dog are here to support me today and it’s just so nice to cross the finish line and to be able to give my wife a massive hug.
This course suits me quite well; a hard race and then an uphill sprint to the finish. I think knowing the finish from a couple of years ago also helped me. We have a really great team here, we have me for these sorts of finishes, we have Kaden Groves for the flat sprints, and we also have Simon Yates for the GC and the mountain stages, so we have all stages covered and we’ve started it off on the best note so far.”

Sonny Colbrelli update: As of 11:14 AM Pacific time, this is the update from Sonny Colbrelli's Bahrain Victorious team: Following the sprint on Stage 1 of Volta a Catalunya, Sonny Colbrelli fell unconscious. Colbrelli underwent further medical assistance, and he was in stable condition upon being taken into an ambulance to Hospital Universitari de Girona to investigate his condition further.
