Weather at the finish city of Rijsbergen at 1:44 PM, local time: 21C (69F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 19 km/hr (12 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here is the report from stage and overall winner Olav Kooij's Team Jumbo-Visma:

Olav Kooij has won the final stage and the final classification of the ZLM Tour. The sprinter of Team Jumbo-Visma had already taken two stage wins but managed to secure his third in the finish in Rijsbergen. In addition to the general classification, Kooij also won the points classification and the youth classification.

Team Jumbo-Visma could look back on a successful week. The yellow and black brigade colored the race in their own country. The team, consisting of five riders trained in the own Development Team, rode a dominant race and took the team classification.

Team Jumbo-Visma kept cool. With Lars Boven in a controlling role, the breakaway did not get far. In the final phase, a sprint proved inevitable. Thanks to an impressive acceleration, Kooij treated his teammates and himself to a third stage victory. Kooij’s 2022 victory tally, after the stage and final victory in his own country, is eight wins. For his team, Kooij achieved victory numbers 21 and 22 this year.

"It was a successful week”, the 20-year-old sprinter said. "We knew the final victory was up for grabs if nothing crazy happened. With the stage win, we were able to put the icing on the cake. It is great to win all the classifications. We don't race in our own country that often; to have a week like this is wonderful."

Former professional cyclists Maarten Wynants and Robert Wagner, both in the role of sports director this week, were impressed. "Maarten and I haven't been sports directors very long; this was a fantastic week for us”, Wagner said. "We had young, hungry riders in the team. There's a lot of power and energy in this group, which makes it great to work with them. We had a daily plan and did great lead-outs for and with Olav. Almost all guys are around twenty years old and ride very strong, together with experienced guys like Tosh and Jos. That makes this victory very special."

Wagner was closely involved in setting up Jumbo-Visma Development Team a few years back. The German can conclude that the structure of the in-house development team also yields good results in the ZLM Tour. "This week underpins that we are doing well with a view to the future. Men like Michel, Olav, Tim, Mick and Lars all come from the Development Team. It is nice to see that the work we have put into these guys over the past two and a half years has been effective. Not only for the riders but also for the team and the training program."

Saturday, June 11: Stage 4, Rucphen - Mierlo, 195 km

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Mierlo at 1:25 PM, local time: 23C (73F), fair, with the wind from the southwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from GC leader Olav Kooij's Team Jumbo-Visma.

Olav Kooij has won his fourth consecutive podium place in the ZLM Tour. The general classification leader took second place in Mierlo and increased his lead in the general classification.

The fourth stage also turned out to be a classic sprint stage. A breakaway group of seven riders took the lead but was no threat to the stage win. Team Jumbo-Visma again showed that it dares to take the race into its own hands. Together with other teams, the Dutch squad controlled the stage. Helped by his teammates, Kooij again put himself in an ideal position in the sprint. At the finish line, the young sprinter was narrowly beaten by Dupont.

Although he improved his position in the general classification in stage four, Kooij would have preferred to win his third stage. "The fact that I didn’t win is a bit disappointing. The guys had a good lead-out again today. Yesterday I waited a bit too long with the sprint, so I decided to just do it today. I felt I still had good legs. Unfortunately, the sprint didn't work out in my favour. I am slightly ahead in the general classification. That is a good thing with a view to the final classification. We have a strong team here and that's why I want to go for the stage win again tomorrow."

Weather at the finish city of Buchten at 1:50 PM, local time: 22C (72F), cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 19 km/hr (12 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage three summary:

The Limburg stage on the third day of the ZLM Tour was won by Jakub Mareczko. The Alpecin-Fenix rider took sporting revenge for his declassification from yesterday and grabbed the victory after a stage of 192 kilometers in Buchten from GC leader Olav Kooij (Team Jumbo Visma) and the Dane Alexander Salby (Riwal Cycling Team).

The peloton was once again looking forward to racing. Soon after the start in Heythuysen, a leading group of six riders broke away with Tim Bierkens (Allinq), Jordy Bouts (BEAT Cycling), Nick van der Meer and Roel van Sintmaartensdijk (VolkerWessels), Jacob Eriksson (Riwal) and Jack Bernard Murphy (EvoPro Racing).

The front runners were the first to get to the top of the Limburg hills, including Cauberg, Geulhemmerberg, Bemelerberg, Loorberg, Camerig and Eyserbosweg. But they never got more than a few minutes ahead. Bouts, Van Sintmaartensdijk and Eriksson were the last riders left off the front and were only caught by the peloton on the local circuits in Buchten.

In the bunch sprint, Jakub Mareczko convincingly showed himself the fastest of the group. At the finish line he had a clear lead over Olav Kooij and Alexander Salby. “This is a nice revenge after yesterday's stage”, said the Italian winner after the finish. “This is my second win of the season. Hopefully more will follow soon.” Elia Viviani (INEOS Grenadiers) and Milan Fretin (Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise) crossed the line in fourth and fifth.

Olav Kooij remains in the lead in the general classification. He will therefore also start tomorrow in the yellow ZLM leader's jersey. The 20-year-old rider of Team Jumbo Visma also retains the Skoda green jersey of the points classification and the Happy Dog white jersey of the youth classification.

The fourth stage of the ZLM Tour on Saturday 11 June takes the riders from Rucphen to Geldrop-Mierlo and has a distance of 196 kilometers.

Thursday, June 9: Stage 2, Veere - Goes, 183 km

After Jakub Mareczko was relegated, Olav Kooij was declared the stage winner and remains the GC leader.

Les Woodland's book The Olympics' 50 Craziest Stories: A Five Ring Circus is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Goes at 1:25 PM, local time: 18C (65C), fair, with the wind from the west at 21 km/hr (13 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from winner Olav Kooij's Team Jumbo-Visma:

Olav Kooij has also won the second stage of the ZLM Tour. The sprinter finished second in the second stage, but after Jakub Mareczko had been relegated, Kooij took the win.

Ten riders formed the day's breakaway, but echelons ensured that the leaders were soon caught again. Team Jumbo-Visma was well represented in the front group with several riders.

The wind played a significant role in the rest of the race and Team Jumbo-Visma broke the front group in two. Of the twenty riders in front, five were from Jumbo-Visma. The leading group saw its lead over the chasing group steadily increase and although a passing train seemed to cause problems for a moment, the groups didn't come together.

His teammates piloted Kooij in the final phase but saw Team Ineos-Grenadiers take over in the last kilometre. Mareckzo, who veered from right to left when he started his sprint, outsmarted Kooij. The young Dutchman was ultimately declared the winner of the stage.

"This is a strange way to take home the victory”, Kooij said. "Of course I would have preferred to cross the finish line with my hands in the air." According to Kooij, the team did everything right until the last roundabout. "As a team, we were well represented all day."

"We opened the throttle at the right moment, and then you know you might cause a shift. Fortunately, that worked out well, after which we were left with a nice group. At the last roundabout, we waited too long. When you have dominated the race, you want to finish it off. Unfortunately, that didn't work out, but I did win my second stage here."

Kooij's victory marked the eighteenth road win for Team Jumbo-Visma in 2022. For Kooij, it is his ninth victory for the World Tour branch of the Dutch outfit. The 20-year-old sprinter transferred from Jumbo-Visma Development Team in early 2021.

Wednesday, June 8: Stage 1, Kapelle - Kapelle, 100.9 km

Olav Kooij (left front) is the day's fastest rider. Photo: Peter van Rooij

Les Woodland's book Cycling’s 50 Craziest Stories is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Kapelle at 1:25 PM, local time: 14C (58F), raining, with the wind from the south at 18 km/hr (11 mph). The rain is expected to continue through the afternoon.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage one summary:

The first stage of the ZLM Tour was won by Olav Kooij. The Team Jumbo-Visma cyclist showed himself the fastest in a bunch sprint in the streets of Kapelle in Zeeland after a ride of 100.9 kilometers. He beat the Italians Jakub Mareczko (Alpecin-Fenix) and Elia Viviani (INEOS-Grenadiers).

The riders were clearly looking forward to the stage on the circuit around Kapelle and Wemeldinge. Despite the strong wind, more than 46 kilometers were covered in the first hour. In the beginning, a leading group of five riders set out, with the Zeelanders Wesley Mol (Bike Aid) and Thijs de Lange (Metec-Solarwatt), Arne Peters (Allinq), Aaron van Poucke (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) and Ceriel Desal (Bingoal-Pauwels Sauces). However, they never got more than a minute ahead.

In the final Thijs de Lange tried to escape again, but this attempt was also destroyed by the fiercely chasing peloton. The bunch sprint was right up the alley of the fast Olav Kooij (20). He started the sprint from far and kept his lead until the finish. “I was the first through the last corner. Fortunately, no one else got over it,” said Kooij. “I came here for a stage win. Then it’s nice if it works in the first stage. This is a nice boost for the coming stages.”

All leaders' jerseys for Kooij
Under the watchful eye of alderman Jon Herselman, acting mayor Fons Naterop of Kapelle and Zeeland deputy Joannes de Bat, Olay Kooij received the yellow leader’s jersey from Oscar Monshouwer, general manager of ZLM Verzekeringen. The Skoda green jersey of the points classification and the Happy Dog white jersey of the youth classification also went around the shoulders of the young Dutchman.
