Marcel Kittel wins the fifth stage and sews up his victory in the 2017 Dubai Tour

The race: Here's the report from winner Marcel Kittel's Quick Step team.

Marcel Kittel capped off a great week in the Middle East by taking his third stage victory.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

The fourth edition of the Dubai Tour was a memorable one for Quick-Step Floors and Marcel Kittel, who won three of the four stages capitalizing on the great work of his teammates, who took the front of the peloton every day and controlled the breakaway before delivering the German in the final 200 meters, where his huge power, incredible burst of speed and tactical nous did the rest, catapulting him to victory and a perfect start to his second season with Quick-Step Floors.

The last stage of the race was also the shortest at 124 kilometers and got off to a flying start, with speeds of over 50 km/h, as several riders tried to jump clear and make it into the break. It turned out to be mission impossible in the first 40 kilometers of the day, as none of the escapes was to the peloton's liking. Eventually, Matteo Bono (UAE Abu Dhabi), Ivan Cortina (Bahrain-Merida), Floris Gerts (BMC) and Dmitry Gruzdev (Astana) got a green light and went into the break, but Julian Alaphilippe and Bob Jungels led a steady chase behind them, carrying the field on the flat roads to Dubai City Walk, and kept the gap under two minutes all the time.

With 10 kilometers left, it was all back together as the sprinters' teams began jostling for position on the wide roads of Dubai. Quick-Step Floors took over the front and upped the pace as more and more lead-out trains began to form. Once again, Fabio Sabatini slotted into his role as Marcel Kittel's final man, but a chain problem meant that the German was on his own going into a tight right-hand bend with 400 meters left.

This didn't stop Marcel, who kept a close eye on his opponents and started his sprint on the outside, getting the better of Elia Viviani (Team Sky) and Riccardo Minali (Astana) for his third stage win this week. It was his eighth career victory at the Dubai Tour, one which sealed the general classification, where Kittel finished ahead of Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto-NL-Jumbo) and John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo). The overall success coincided with the team's tenth win of 2017, a remarkable achievement giving that we're just one month into the season.

John Degenkolb

John Degenkolb wins stage 3

The Race: During the race Astana's Andriy Grivko punched raced leader Marcel Kittel in the face. Here's the report from Kittel's Quick Step team.

Bicycle History

Quick-Step Floors' Marcel Kittel continues to lead the Dubai Tour with two stages left.

Crosswinds and sand played havoc at the Dubai Tour, taking to the ground several riders and splitting the field to pieces 70 kilometers into stage 3. It took 20 kilometers for the shattered peloton to come back together, and once this happened, Luxembourg champion Bob Jungels took the front and knocked one minute off in just two kilometers, as the gap of the escapees tumbled down to three minutes for the last 55 kilometers of the stage, which was set to conclude in Al Aqah, another new finish for the Middle East race.

Jungels, Davide Martinelli, Maximilian Schachmann and Julien Vermote traded turns at the head of the bunch and melted the advantage of the four breakaway riders, before reabsorbing them with only three kilometers left. The last 500 meters were in a slight uphill and the sprint trains had again difficulties in getting themselves together, as many riders couldn't find space for maneuvering. In the end, John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) edged his opponents and took the win ahead of Reinardt Janse van Rensburg (Dimension Data) and Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida).

A double stage winner at this edition, Marcel Kittel was boxed out during the sprint and couldn't fight for victory at the end of the stage which saw Andriy Grivko (Astana) inflict an injury on him, after sending a punch above his left eye. That blow left Marcel with a deep cut and blood streaming down his face: "Today's race was confusing because of the sandstorm and a lot of teams had to sacrifice many guys in the kilometers before the finish because of this. I think everyone felt how hard it was today, and many guys were on the limit at one point. That made the stage really tough", said Marcel Kittel right after the finish in Al Aqah.

The German then went on to explain the incident in which he was involved with Grivko, who eventually was expelled from the race by the jury: "When we passed a construction site, the sand began blowing and as soon as we went into the crosswinds we were fighting for position, which is always stressful, and Andriy Grivko punched me. I really can't understand how he can do something like that. I get that riding in the crosswinds is always tense, but it gives him no right to act like that. He could have hurt my eye. It's a real shame what happened. In the finale, my mind wasn't 100% on the sprint, but I am happy I have no big injuries and I kept the lead."

Wednesday, February 1: Stage 2, Dubai - Ras al Khaimah, 188 km

Marcel Kittel

Marcel Kittel makes it two Dubai stages in a row

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Marcel Kittel's Quick Step team.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Marcel Kittel was again unbeatable at the Dubai Tour, where he took his second victory, a thrilling one, thus extending his overall lead with three stages to go, two of which are also very likely to end in a bunch sprint. It was the German's seventh career win at the Middle East race, and Quick-Step Floors' – by far the team of the early season – eighth victory of the year.

Starting the day in the blue jersey of the overall leader, Marcel Kittel stayed safely in the peloton on the road to Ras al Khaimah, a new finish in the Dubai Tour, with the break of five not being a threat for the stage win, as Bob Jungels, Davide Martinelli and Julien Vermote always kept it under control, before eventually making the catch inside the last 11 kilometers.

The final part of the stage 2 was scrappy, with the sprinters' teams struggling to find room and a good position at the front. Marcel Kittel was well-positioned by his teammates in the upper part of the bunch, but due to the chaotic nature of the finale, he was closed at one point and had to come from far back with just 500 meters to go.

Despite that and the fact he was forced to start his sprint later than his opponents, the German's acceleration was impossible to beat by the others and he went on to score his second successive stage win at the Dubai Tour, ahead of Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Jakub Mareczko (Wilier-Selle Italia). It was Quick-Step Floors' fourth success in a row, after the one of yesterday and the two of Maximiliano Richeze in the Vuelta a San Juan, last week.

"Today was a difficult one. The final was different and tricky, and as a result there wasn't an opportunity to stretch out the peloton, but adapting to different race situations shows the strength of the team. The guys did once again an incredible job, Fabio brought me to the front when it mattered, Matteo kept the speed high, and I jumped from wheel to wheel and managed to take the victory. It's nice to win also like this", said Marcel, who leads not only the overall, but also the points classification.

Following his perfectly-timed sprint, which brought also important bonus seconds, the 28-year-old rider of Quick-Step Floors Cycling Team will start stage 3 (Dubai – Al Aqah, 200 kilometers) with an 8-second advantage over his closest rival in the GC, a buffer which could provide important at the end of the race: "To have seven stage victories here is nice. As I said at the beginning of the week, Dubai has always been good to me. The race is not over, and our goal is to keep on working and take it day by day as good as possible. We'll see how things pan out."

Tuesday, January 31: Stage 1 DIMC - Palm Jumeirah, 181 km

Marcel Kittel

The race: Here's the story from winner Marcel Kittel's Quick Step team.

Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies

Marcel Kittel enjoyed an excellent start to the season in the Middle East race, scoring his sixth victory there after a perfect lead-out of Quick-Step Floors.

The German got his season up and running, picking up where he left off at the Dubai Tour, after he powered to win on stage 1 of the event, which finished on the island of Palm Jumeirah, at the end of 181 fast kilometers. It was Quick-Step Floors' seventh victory of the year, as Marcel became the team's fifth different rider to win a race and open his year in style, after Jack Bauer at the New Zealand National ITT Championships, Tom Boonen, Fernando Gaviria and Maximiliano Richeze, all three at the Vuelta a San Juan.

The inaugural stage of the Dubai Tour kicked off with an attack of five riders, who managed to take a four-minute gap on the peloton. Nicola Boem (Bardiani-CSF), Matteo Bono (UAE Abu Dhabi), Silvan Dillier (BMC), Daniel Pearson (Aqua Blue Sport) and Tom Stewart (ONE Pro Cycling) were the ones to animate the stage in its first part, but were always kept under control by the fantastic Bob Jungels and Julien Vermote; the two put in a huge amount of work and drilled it hard at the front on the flat and twisting roads of stage 1, making sure the escapees' adventure came to an end with ten kilometers to go.

As the sprint trains began forming, the Quick-Step Floors boys moved their way through the peloton and took the front inside the final two kilometers, just after the last roundabout. Other teams tried to counter, but couldn't do anything against the blue train, as Matteo Trentin and Fabio Sabatini brought Marcel Kittel in an excellent position just 200 meters from the line, setting him up for his sixth career victory in the Dubai Tour.

Marcel's huge sprint didn't give any chances to his opponents, as the 28-year-old German roared over the finish line, ahead of Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data): "I'm really happy. In the last few days I felt I was very confident about the team. I'm happy to have a winning start, just like last year", said Kittel, the race's first overall leader. "It was difficult to time it right because there are a lot of strong sprinters here and you need to find the right moment. We were always in a good position, not really in the front, but we chose the right distance to go for it. After we passed the last roundabout, we tried to find each other and we went full gas to the finish line. It worked really well."

It was Marcel's first ever victory on disc brakes, one which we was keen on sharing with the whole team: "A lot of riders came to me today and asked me about that, they were curious about the disk brakes and how it feels to ride with it. I think I made the right choice and I'm happy to have it this season. The most important thing is that we came out on top today. Last year we won many races together, and that's what we want to do also this season. The first race of the year is always insecure, because you can never know how things will work. All the guys were there today and did a great job, so this is also a victory of them."
