Marcel Kittel

Marcel Kittel wins stage 4

The Course: The final stage is now a classic, with just a few changes compared to the previous editions, going through the Old and New Town. It starts in the direction of the great Meydan Racecourse to reach and cross Mushrif Park and then move to the beaches of Al Mamzar. It then runs through Deira, Al Maktoum Bridge and the entire Old Town, almost to Port Rashid, and from there enters the Jumeirah Road past the large Union Flag. Then there’s a u-turn at the Burj-al-Arab to go back to Jumeirah Road and reach the Burj Khalifa which is the finishing point.

The Race: as told by the team of stage and overall winner Marcel Kittel.

Marcel Kittel was a man on a mission on Saturday. Starting the fourth and final day of the Dubai Tour only 6 seconds behind overall leader Giacomo Nizzolo, the 27-year-old rider of Etixx – Quick-Step knew everything was still possible at the finish, where the victory and 10 potentially decisive bonus seconds were on the line. That's why his teammates came to the front inside the last 30 kilometers and took control of the bunch, in order to catch the six riders in the breakaway: Mark Christian (Team Wiggins), Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida), Roy Curvers (Giant-Alpecin), Sebastian Lander (One Pro Cycling), Jan Polanc (Lampre-Merida) and Daniel Teklehaimanot (Dimension Data).

Inside the final 5 kilometers, it all came down to a duel between Etixx – Quick-Step and Trek Factory-Segafredo for the best line, and thanks to the excellent work of his teammates, Marcel Kittel entered third in the last corner, before opening the sprint with his trademark acceleration and getting the stage victory – his second of the week and fifth in the race – ahead of Elia Viviani (Sky) and Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data).

"In the morning, at the technical meeting, we said it's going to be all or nothing and that we're going to focus only on the final sprint. During the stage, we stayed calm and moved to the front at the right moment. The key in the Dubai Tour is to have a strong team all the time, and I had one, which gave 100% for me. I was in an ideal position coming to the line and didn't think at all of my opponents, just focused on doing things right. Now I'm very happy", said the German, who credited his strong ride on the Hatta Dam climb as being decisive in the final outcome: "That was the most important day of the race. It was a very hard ascent, with a 17% gradient, but I was in form and wanted to show what I can do on such a tough finish."

The bonus seconds he grabbed at the Burj Khalifa finish meant that Marcel also won the general classification of the Dubai Tour, as well as the red jersey, which rewards the best rider in the points standings, and will now leave the Middle East with three victories in the bag: "It's really awesome, it gives you a fantastic feeling to cap off the week like that. We trained a lot for the Dubai Tour in the winter and we were fully committed, not only because it was my first race of the season, but also because it was an opportunity to see how the train and the lead-out work. I'm more than satisfied with the way things went and I think we can all be proud. Now I'm even more motivated, and I can't wait for the next races to come."

Stage 3: The Westin Stage / February 5 Dubai International Marine Club – Hatta Dam (172km)

Juan Jose Lobato

Juan José Lobato wins at Hatta Dam

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

The Course: It’s the hardest stage of Dubai tour, 172km on a course which replicates almost entirely the inaugural edition stage, with the addition of the harder final climb of Hatta Dam, as experienced in 2015. It’s characterized by long stretches in the desert crossing the two neighboring Emirates of Sharjah and Ras-al-Khaimah. Once it has left the last buildings in Dubai, the stage will touch Labab, Al Madam and Al Malahia on the road to Hatta where, before facing the finale, riders will face two climbs, the second with peaks of 11% and a fast and challenging downhill. The last three kilometres are a continuous ascent up to face the final climb that leads to the dam: a short stretch of about 200 meters with an inclination from 12% to 17%.

The Race: Just a few kilometers into the race five men rolled off the front. Team Sky spent the day spending watts keeping the break close at hand. Indeed, the quintet was never allowed much more than a couple of minutes.

The day's racing was always going to be centered on the Hatta Dam ascent, and that's where the action did start. The break was caught as Astana rider Dimitry Gruzdev tried his luck. Others rolled the dice, but it was for naught as the big guns began their moves.

It was Movistar rider Juan José Lobato who had the strength to go slightly clear at the end, dropping such storied riders and Fabian Cancellara and Philippe Gilbert.

The day's second-place, Giacomo Nizzolo, becomes the new GC leader.

Stage 2: Nakheel Stage / February 4 Dubai International Marine Club – Palm Jumeirah (Atlantis) (183km)

Elia Viviani wins stage 2

Elia Viviani wins Dubai stage 2

Cycling's 50 Craziest Stories

The Course: A stage of two distinct parts. The first part is just outside the metropolis, partially in the desert, the second part within Dubai Marina to end in Palm Jumeirah, in front of the Atlantis “door”. The first part will pass next to the Camel Track, the Al Qudra bike path, the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Sports Complex pool and through the desert. The second part returns into the city touching Dubailand, the Jumeirah Golf Club and Dubai Sports City. It then heads to the finale on the Palm through an underwater tunnel before the last kilometers, with the halfway point on the artificial island. From here there will be 3200m to the final sprint.

The race: Since I was shameless enough to post Sky's telling of today's Herald Sun Tour stage, I figure I might as well continue on that path. Here's Sky's telling of their second race victory of the day.

Elia Viviani sprinted to his first win of the season at the Dubai Tour and took the race lead. After a 'perfect' lead-out the Italian claimed a comfortable win on the Palm Jumeirah island, with team-mate Ben Swift finishing sixth. As well as taking the blue race leader's jersey, Viviani also moved to the top of the points classification.

It made it a stunning 24 hours for the team, following Wout Poels' time-trial victory at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and Peter Kennaugh's stage win at the Herald Sun Tour.

The lead-out worked to perfection in Dubai after the disappointment of day one, and Viviani was quick to thank his team-mates after the stage. He said: "[Michal] Golas, Andy Fenn and [Ben] Swifty did a perfect lead-out for me. We came out of the tunnel really, really fast. Andy and Swifty took me to 100m to go so a big thanks to the team. Perfect job!

"Yesterday we had some faults and we went too early. I had to do two sprints and I'm not competitive with big sprinters if I have to sprint to take position before sprinting for the victory.

"We had a good meeting this morning with (Sport Directors) Nico (Portal) and Brett (Lancaster). Brett has a lot of experience in the lead-outs and we knew yesterday that we went too early. Everyone was really motivated after that and I'm really happy we worked out."

The victory marked the first step in an ambitious goal for Viviani during the 2016 campaign as he aims for 10 victories on the road.

He explained: "This year we decided to do something with the fans to countdown my wins from one to hopefully 10. This is the first one on the board. Last year I finished with nine victories so this year I said okay, we need to do 10 for the first time because I've never done it before. But it is good to have a goal like this to aim for. I would have preferred to win at the Tour de San Luis last week but it's perfect to start the season here like I did last year. Maybe it's a lucky race for me!"

The pan-flat stage unfolded as expected and a four-man break was swallowed up by the peloton with 15 kilometres to go. As the pace ramped up towards the finish the sprinters' teams begun to fight for position at the front of the bunch before a Trek-Segafredo rider crashed inside the last kilometre, disrupting the peloton.

Sky were on the outside edge of the group and unaffected by the crash, which seemed to cause race leader Marcel Kittel problems.

That left Viviani in the perfect position to sprint and, after a great lead-out by Gianni Moscon, Christian Knees, Golas, Fenn and Swift, he did the rest.

Stage 1: Fujairah Stage / February 3 Dubai International Marine Club – Fujairah (173km)

Stage 1 video

Marcel Kittel wins stage 1

Marcel Kittel wins stage one.

The course: The stage joins the beach of Dubai Marina on the Arabian Gulf with the beach of Fujairah on the Indian Ocean (Gulf of Oman). It runs through the entire stretch of desert between Dubai and Fujairah through the territory of four different Emirates (Dubai, Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah).

It touches the Silicon Oasis area before facing the long straights that, cutting through the dunes, lead to the Hajar Mountains for a short and mild sequence of hills. It then arrives into Fujairah, where there will be a 6.6km circuit to be completed twice.

The race: Marcel Kittel put on a superb display of power and speed today when he started his sprint early, from way back to take the Dubai Tour's first stage. Mark Cavendish was moving up (see video), but no one was going to beat the big German today.

After the race Kittel said, "Especially after the hard season I had last year, I'm incredibly happy that I could win today for my first race with my new team. Everything has worked so well that I can't think of any topic to raise to make it better. The boys have done a good job. We were the strongest in the lead out and the timing was perfect. We made a plan and we executed it. I certainly enjoyed the win, this one has a special flavour. As I said before the season, I restart at zero. I feel very good about today's outcome. We'll stay focused and hopefully there's more to come for us at the Dubai Tour."
