Weather at the start city of Al Ain, Dhubai at 8:30 AM, local time: 22C (72F), fair, with the wind from the south-southeast at 29 km/hr (18 mph). The temperature is forecast to climb to 31C (87F) by 2:00 PM. No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race organizer's final 2024 UAE Tour report.

Jebel Hafeet, 25 February 2024 – The 10.8 kilometres of the Jebel Hafeet climb changed the hierarchies of the UAE Tour 2024, which was decided on the line in favour of Lennert Van Eetvelt. The Belgian rider took the Red Jersey thanks to a spectacular action in the last 2 km of a climb that had seen in the first half Brandon McNulty and Jay Vine, respectively first and third in the general classification, being dropped by the front group. After catching Emanuel Buchmann, lone survivor of today’s breakaway, it was Van Eetvelt who attacked first, followed by the White Jersey Ilan Van Wilder and Michael Storer.

With 1.8 km to the finish, Van Eetvelt went solo and kept pushing until the last metre, relegating the chasing group, led by Bilbao on O’Connor, to 22 seconds. Thanks to the time bonuses, Van Eetvelt won his first career stage race by 2″ over O’Connor and 11" over Bilbao. In addition to the Red Jersey, the Lotto Dstny rider also took home the White Jersey as best young rider with Tim Merlier in the Green Jersey, Mark Stewart in the Black Jersey, and Lidl-Trek at the top of the teams classification.

Speaking immediately after being presented with the Red Jersey and the race winner’s trophy on the podium, Lennert Van Eetvelt said: “My plan for today was to finish with no regret and I don’t have any regret now! I looked at race last couple of years, where they went and I noticed the steeper part at 3km to go. That was the last chance to go for GC. My legs were really good today. This is by far my best result. I’ve improved a lot really. It’s a bit crazy that I win the UAE Tour thanks to time bonuses I took in a breakaway on stage 5. It started with a joke with the doctor and it became a nice training ride that gave me 6’’ and now I win the overall by 2’’. It’s crazy to see my name on the list of riders who have won this race after Remco Evenepoel, Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic. I came for a good result on GC, not for winning, so it’s just amazing. My next race Strade Bianche suits me well. I’m confident I can do a good result there too”.

The winner of the Green Jersey Tim Merlier said: “I didn’t expect Lennert Van Eetveld to win the UAE Tour. But we knew that echelons could dictate the scenario of the race and some riders paid the price. As for myself, I’m really happy and proud of what I’ve achieved here with three stage wins and the Green Jersey for the second year in a row. I’d like to come back to the UAE Tour for sure”.

STATISTICS

Tim Merlier wins stage six.

Tour de France: 2023

Weather at Abu Dhabi at 8:20 AM, local time: 21C (69F), mist, with the wind from the southwest at 5 km/hr (3 mph). The temperature is forecast to climb to 25C (77F) by 1:00 PM. There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer' stage six report.

After winning in Liwa and Dubai Harbour, Tim Merlier brings home also the ALDAR stage, 138 km from Abu Dhabi Louvre Museum to Abu Dhabi Breakwater, becoming the first rider to win five stages at the UAE Tour and the first one with three stages in a single edition. The Green Jersey showed again perfect timing by taking the lead in the last 150 meters and resisting the return of Arvid De Kleijn, who finished in second place, as in the other sprints won by the former Belgian National Champion.

With this victory, Merlier secures the leadership of the Points Classification on the eve of the final stage of the one and only UCI World Tour race in the Middle East which will take the riders to atop the 1025 metres of Jebel Hafeet. Jay Vine will start in the Red Jersey with an advantage of 11″ over Ben O’ Connor and 13″ over Brandon McNulty. 14 riders have a gap of less than a minute from the UAE Team Emirates rider which means that everything can still happen in the final 161 km of this edition.

Speedy Tim Merlier wins another stage.

Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Tim Merlier said: “The guys brought me in good position when the road was a bit narrow. From there it went really fast. I was a bit surprised to see that we were already in the last kilometre. There was a bit of space to move up with 700 metres to go. Bert [Van Lerberghe] delivered me just on time. I didn’t find his slipstream anymore but I went all in as we were coming to the right. It’s nice to finish it off. It’s a very nice feeling to being the first guy to win three stages in a single UAE Tour, looking at all the sprinters who were here in the past and now. It makes me really proud”.

The Red Jersey Jay Vine said: “I didn’t see any dangerous point today really. It reminded me of not so long ago when I was commuting by bike to go to work in Australia. You got that feeling of riding through red lights it was very cool to have a look at the buildings and stuff. Today was not super hard, but it’s going to be a big day tomorrow. I’ll have to consume about 4000 calories, maybe a bit more, so I had to do fuelling today for tomorrow, on the bike, after race and this evening, just to keep my stomach ok. I don’t know if we’ll have to set a defensive tempo tomorrow. Looking at this stage in previous years, it’s really up to people who have to make up time that haver to make the race hard, so I expect Decathlon-Ag2r and Soudal Quick-Step to speed up from the lower slopes. It shouldn’t be all up to us. We have some good riders. Mikkel [Bjerg] is really strong. To have him as far as possible up the climb with us will be useful. It’s also probably going to be the hottest day of the week tomorrow. It’ll be about responding, not losing time. As long as I keep McNulty’s wheel in front of mine, it should be fine”.

STATISTICS

  • Tim Merlier posted his 5th season win, nearly a half of the ones he scored last season (11). This was his 39th professional win.
  • Third stage podium for Arvid De Kleijn at the UAE Tour: they are all 2nd places, and all behind Tim Merlier, in stages 1, 4 and 6.
  • Second stage podium at the UAE Tour for Phil Bauhaus: he was equally 3rd in this same stage finish on the 27th of February 2021.

Weather at the finish city of Umm Al Quwain at 7:30 AM, local time: 16C (61F), fair, with the wind from the south-southeast at 2 km/hr (1 mph). The temperature is forecast to climb to 25C (76F) by 1:00 PM. There is a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Olav Kooij's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Olav Kooij has won the fifth stage of the UAE Tour. In the bunch sprint, the young Dutchman turned out to cross the finish line just a bit earlier than Tim Merlier after an extensive examination of the finish photo. It is the second win of 2024 for Kooij.

For the sprinters, Friday's stage meant the third chance for success. After the first two bunch sprints turned out to be a win for Belgian Merlier, Kooij, after a nerve-racking sprint, was able to claim victory. In the final meters Kooij came forward on the right side of the road. Just a fraction ahead of Merlier, he pushed his wheel over the line.

"It took a very long time before redemption came," Kooij described the moments right after the sprint. "I wasn't sure if I had won. However, the long wait did not diminish the relief. The field of competitors is very strong and everything has to go along to be able to compete for the win here at the UAE Tour. That was the case today. I was well in front at the last roundabout, because of the good work of the team. In the end, I squeezed into Mark Cavendish's wheel. A gap then opened up and I saw my chance."

The 22-year-old sprinter thus grabbed his second victory of the season, raising Team Visma | Lease a Bike's victory tally to three. "I rate this win highly. Not least because the competition here is also very strong. It is a very nice victory that gives me a lot of confidence towards the rest of my season. I'm pleased that I can now reward the work of the team. We came here for a stage win and we can now say that we succeeded," Kooij said.

Weather at Dubai at 8:00 AM, local time: 20C (68F), fair, with the wind from the southeast at 8 km/hr (5 mph). The temperature is forecast to rise to 24C (76F) by 1:00 PM. There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage four summary.

Dubai Harbour, 22 February 2024 – Second sprint and second victory for Tim Merlier who, after winning the opening stage, took home also the Dubai Stage.

As it happened on the first day of the UAE Tour, the former Belgian National Champion took the lead in the sprint with just over 100 metres to go, keeping behind Arvid De Kleijn and Olav Kooij. No changes in the classifications as Jay Vine keeps the Red Jersey while Ilan Van Wilder still holds the White Jersey. Mark Stewart, in the breakaway for the third day out of three in company with Harm Vanhoucke, has increased his lead in the Green and Black Jersey Classifications.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Tim Merlier said: “It might have looked easy but it wasn’t. Sprinting is never easy. With my team-mates we found each other really good today. They brought me in a very good position. In the last 500 metres I was waiting to start my sprint. I wanted to go early but I managed not to. Olav Kooij went first and I passed him. I love to win again. It’s nice to hear that I’m making history being the first sprinter to win two stages in two consecutive UAE Tour. I want to make more history in the next two days as the team is on the rails for more successes but it won’t be easy”.
The former Belgian National Champion becomes the most succesful rider in the history of the UAE Tour. Arvid De Kleijn, second placed as in the opening stage, and Olav Kooij complete today’s podiums

Weather at the city of Ras al Khaimah (see map below) at 8:30 AM, local time: 21C (69F), fair, with the wind from the south-southeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast. The temperature is forecast to climb to 25C (74F) by noon.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage three summary.

The first uphill finish of the UAE Tour redefines the general classification of the sixth edition of the one and only UCI WorldTour race in the Middle East. Thanks to a superb lead out by his team-mate Valentin Paret-Paintre, it was Ben O’Connor who imposed himself atop of the 1489 metres of Jebel Jais, anticipating by 5" the comeback of the group in which almost all the main GC riders were included.

The Red Jersey has a new owner but remains in the same team (UAE Team Emirates) as Jay Vine, second at the finish, is now the new leader of the general classification. The pace that followed the attack by the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team duo was too hard for Brandon McNulty who was dropped in the final 300 meters. The winner of yesterday’s time trial reached the finish line 14″ after Ben O’Connor and now he sits in 3rd place 13" behind Vine. Adam Yates, who crashed in the first half of the stage, was forced to abandon the race with just over 10km to go.

PRESS CONFERENCE
Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Ben O’Connor said: “I asked Valentin Paret-Peintre] to just go full gas. I didn’t really thought about what we were doing. I didn’t want to go for the sprint. I had to go earlier. We got a gap and I had to hold on. My preparation for the season has been great. I won my first race in Murcia with echelons and we were three in the front group. Today was the first mountain test and it couldn’t go any better. To come here for racing is really really good. It’s nice to race for a sprinter [Sam Bennett] as well. We all get along here. It’s a WorldTour win and that’s where we’ve set the bar. I wanted to win a big stage”.

The new Red Jersey Jay Vine said: “My sights are always on winning. A surge came, I looked for Brandon, he started turning back and I heard on the radio “Jay you’ve got topull”. I carried to the front and I kept going flat out. The plan was for the team to take the red jersey home at the end of the week. We did pretty well to come away with me in the red jersey at the end of the day. Mikkel Bjerg rode a fantastic race keeping Brandon and myself at the front. In the last kilometre it was just giving everything till the finish. Adam Yates’ crash was a bit of a weird one, not on a pretty stressful part. I didn’t see it happen. But unfortunately he can’t remember hitting the ground. Hopefully he’s OK. The plan now is to retain the red jersey till the end with a rider from UAE Team Emirates it doesn’t matter who, but I’m sure there are hundred guys out there who have a different idea. It’s incredible that at my first race of the year I’m wearing a WorldTour leader jersey”.

The White Jersey Ilan Van Wilder said: “I’m satisfied to move two spots up on GC to fourth now. It was a nice actually. I was up front in the echelons thanks to my team-mates also. I tried to go for the victory but I exploded a bit when I tried to go in the wheel of Jay Vine. I’d like to make the final podium but even on the flat stages I’ll have to stay very attentive”.

The Green Jersey and Black Jersey holder Mark Stewart said: “It’s pretty special to get the green jersey after three stages. I knew it was possible but it’s not often that things actually go your way. There were a few guys interested in the green jersey competition and I wasn’t sure if they’d let me get in the breakaway. The initial breakaway was quite easy with myself and Silvan Dillier. I picked up the first points then the crosswinds happened. I had to stay in the front group and fight hard for the second intermediate sprint. For a small team and even a small rider like myself, to be presented with the Green Jersey and be able to compete with these top riders, it’s a great honour”.

Weather at Hudayriyat Island at 9:00 AM, local time: 21C (70F), fair, with the wind from the northwest at 3 km/hr (2 mph). The temperature is expected to climb to 23C (74F) by 1:00 PM. There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from winner Brandon McNulty's UAE team Emirates:

UAE Team Emirates dominated the ITT at Al Hudayriyat Island (12,1 km) with Brandon McNulty taking first place in 13’27”, followed by teammates Jay Vine (+2”) and Mikkel Bjerg (+4”). There was a solid performance by Adam Yates also who put in a highly respectable time (16th, + 28”).

The hat-trick was facilitated by the foresight of the team’s sports directors of scheduling the start of the three riders in the early part of the day when course conditions were most favourable. McNulty rode at a blistering speed of 53,9788 km/h.

McNulty, new leader of the UAE Tour ahead of team mates Vine and Bjerg: “The team decided to put the best three time trialist out first in the starting order and it paid off, I guess.

"I am satisfied with my performance. I had good speed and I won the time trial, that was what I wanted. It’s great that we got three of our team on the podium.
Tomorrow’s stage will be demanding, the climb is tough but our team has good climbers so we are confident”.

Brandon McNulty will start stage three in the GC leader's red jersey.

Stage 3 (176 km) will start from Al Marjan Island and it will end on the summit finish of Jebel Jais (19 km at 5,6%).

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish at Liwa at 8:45 AM, local time: 22C (71F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 27 km/hr (17 mph). The temperature should climb to 26C (78F) by 2:00 PM. No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Tim Merlier won again the opening stage of the UAE Tour, the season’s second World Tour stage race, but this time around there was no need for a photo-finish like it was the case in 2023, as the 31-year-old Belgian finished several bike lengths ahead of his opponents after another phenomenal sprint that confirmed he is one of the fastest riders in the world.

Running from Al Dhafra Walk to Liwa, the stage was quiet until the last kilometers, when things became hectic on the wide roads leading to the finish. The teams were expecting crosswinds from the start of the day, just like last year, but the only wind to make an appearance was on the run-in to the line and it blew from the front, meaning that timing was key, especially as the road went up in the closing 500 meters.

The best sprinter of last edition, Tim worked his way through the peloton and remained calm even when the others decided to open with more than 300 meters to go. Powering down the right side of the road, the double Belgian Champion came back like a rocket and passed the other sprinters with incredible ease, taking a clear victory – his third of the year, after the ones he picked up at the Saudi Tour.

“The UAE Tour is a World Tour race and it’s always nice when you get your first win in this type of event. As it was chaotic out there, I lost my lead-out a bit and had to make a decision inside the final 500 meters, so I went on the right side, which turned out to be the best thing to do. The others started their effort early, but I was confident in my legs and had the speed to come back and overtake them. I’m happy with this win, I am more relaxed now and I’m already looking forward to the next opportunities”, said Tim, who leads both the general and the points classification after his 14th victory in the Soudal Quick-Step jersey.
