Weather at the finish city of Jebel Hafeet at 9:00 AM local time: 26C (78F), fair, with the wind from the southeast at 26 km/hr (16 mph). No rain is forecast. The temperature is forecast to climb to 34C (92F) by 2:00 PM.

The stage: The classic mountain stage of the UAE Tour. In the first part, the route winds its way through Al Ain, where many of its landmarks (Al Ain University, Al Qattara, Al Hili) are visited, then takes a long ride through the desert to the west and eventually returns to Green Mubazzarah. Here begins the final climb of Jebel Hafeet, which – at 10 km long – will be the final judge of the race

Final kilometers:
The final climb winds through wide-ranging hairpin bends on a 3-lane roadway. Gradients are mainly around 8-9%, peaking at 11% with 3 km to go. There is a very short descent in the last km, before the closing ramp. The finish line is on straight asphalt.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage seven report.

Tadej Pogacar wins the seventh edition of the UAE Tour by attacking 7.7 km from the finish at Jebel Hafeet, where he had already claimed victory in 2020, 2021, and 2022, securing the Unity Trophy for the third time. The world champion put his stamp on an almost perfect week in a stage raced at extremely high speed (47.129 km/h average). The peloton arrived at the foot of the climb in a fragmented state after crosswinds once again disrupted the balance among the contenders. Big names like Felix Gall and 2024 winner Lennert Van Eetvelt were caught in the second group and could not regain contact with the 42 riders left at front.

Time to go. Tadej Pogacar attacks on the Jebel Hafeet climb.

UAE Team Emirates – XRG set a relentless pace at the base of the climb, splitting the lead group once more and setting the stage for Pogacar’s decisive attack. Only Giulio Ciccone and Oscar Onley managed to stay on his wheel, even if only for 200 metres. The Lidl-Trek rider crossed the line 32” behind the Red Jersey, finishing 3” ahead of Pello Bilbao, who secured his third career podium at the UAE Tour. In the other classifications, Jonathan Milan confirmed his Green Jersey, Djordje Djuric retained the Black Jersey, and Ivan Romeo claimed the White Jersey after Joshua Tarling struggled at the start of the climb.

Tadej Pogacar jumped from 89 to 91 professional wins today: the stage win was his 90th, the GC his 91st.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the UAE Tour 2025 winner Tadej Pogacar said: “The last stage went so fast because it was the last day for some riders who didn’t have a GC contender in their team and wanted to train for the opening weekend in Belgium next week. Crosswinds were suitable to make some chaos in the peloton. It split. Us, the GC riders, had to be attentive. Somehow it worked although at first I didn’t belive it was the right move.

"For me it was a really good day. I wouldn’t mind to go easy to the climb and cool myself instead, but it was a good situation with Rune [Herregodts] and Florian [Vermeersch] to the front. As Rune pulled off, it was my time to attack and go solo. I didn’t want to be surprised by a counter attack or anything. It was better to go at my own pace. Now I won’t take part in any stage race until June so I will switch my mind to one day classics and I hope to do well there also”.

Speaking immediately after being presented with the Red Jersey and the race winner’s trophy on the podium, Tadej Pogacar said: “Today’s race was just suffering until 2km to go when I could relax a bit and try to enjoy the last kilometres, thinking of seeing my family at the finish. It’s nice to finish the UAE Tour like this. For now, I’m glad I’ve won the first race of the season and I can enjoy from now on, going to the classics. I don’t mind if everything goes as smooth as last year. I was in a pretty good shape in Milano-Sanremo last year. This year I’m hoping for luck and finding the good moment in the race to get rid of the sprinters”.

Tour de France: the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour de France: The Inside Story - Making the World's Greatest Bicycle Race is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at Abu Dhabi at 9:00 AM, local time: 22C (72F), fair, with the wind from the north at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain. By 1:00 the temperature is forecast to climb to 25C (77F).

The stage: A stage around the city of Abu Dhabi. Starting at the Abu Dhabi Cycle Club, the route passes through Khalifa City, Yas Island, and returns to Abu Dhabi via Saadiyat Island. The route crosses Al Maryah Island, Al Reem Island, and Yifenah Island, with a key passage at Qasr Al Hosn. The final approach leads from south to north, concluding at Abu Dhabi Breakwater in a likely sprint finish.

Final kilometers: The last 5 km are on a wide road with large half-curves leading to the finish line on tarmac.

Stage 6 gets started

The race: Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Tim Merlier said: “I like to win but I also like to be a bit safer than I was today. I was in the washing machine and I found a gap with 300m to go. I tried to surprise the others but the headwind was strong. I was suffering. It’s been a difficult victory for me to get. My lead out man crashed yesterday so maybe it wasn’t a good idea to do his job today but he still did. Unfortunately we lost each other. I got boxed in and I thought I wasn’t going to make it but I found that gap. I won’t win tomorrow but I always like to race here so I will come back next year”.

The Red Jersey Tadej Pogacar said: “Today I kept my calm and didn’t try to break away. To be honest, I got bored, like most of the bunch today at some point. It’s also part of cycling. I tried to look around and admire the city but it’s always necessary to stay focused to avoid a crash. The UAE Tour is the home race for the team so it’s an honour for me to race here and fight for the victory tomorrow at Jebel Hafeet. I like this Red Jersey!”.

Racing around Abu Dhabi

Here's the race organizer's stage six summary:

Abu Dhabi Breakwater, 22 February 2025 – Tim Merlier dominated the final sprint of the UAE Tour, securing his third consecutive win at the Abu Dhabi Breakwater finish line. With a perfectly timed sprint, he edged out Jasper Philipsen and Green Jersey wearer Jonathan Milan, bringing his total to seven stage wins in The One and Only UCI WorldTour race in the Middle East.

The sprint finish was far than guaranteed, as the peloton only caught the last two breakaway survivors, Carlos Samudio and Manuele Tarozzi, with just 2.5 km to go. The duo had been part of a four-men breakaway that also featured Kristian Sbaragli and Black Jersey holder Djordje Djuric. Tomorrow, the decisive stage for the general classification unfolds with the summit finish at Jebel Hafeet. Red Jersey leader Tadej Pogacar will start with a 21" advantage over Joshua Tarling and 27" over Ivan Romeo.

Tadej Pogacar will start the final stage in the GC leader's red jersey.

PRESS CONFERENCE
Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Tim Merlier said: “I was a bit dropped today. We tried to organise it like yesterday but it was difficult with the headwind. With 1.5km to go, I lost Bert [Van Lerberghe]. I was behind and he didn’t come back. I was far, I thought it was over but I found a gap with 300 metres to go and I surprised everyone. It was a long effort. I was happy to stay in the front”.

The Red Jersey Tadej Pogacar said: “In a one-week stage race with an uphill sprint, one time trial, three bunch sprints and two mountain stages, you have to be good every day. We are used to the UAE Tour. I’m also used to Jebel Hafeet. I’ve already won there several times but I also lost once to Adam Yates who is now my team-mate. I hope I can deliver again tomorrow or if it’s not me, maybe Jay Vine can do it. For sure we’ll go for it, either way, and bring some more memories from the UAE. We have two cards to play. Jay is also up there on GC. He’s super strong. Let’s hope for good legs tomorrow. It’s going to be another windy day so we’ll have to stay focused from start to finish”.

Weather at the race city of Dubai at 8:50 AM, local time: 24C (75F), fair, with the wind from the east at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain. The temperature is forecast to climb to 28C (82F) by 1:00 PM.

The stage: A stage in Dubai. The race will leave the city in the direction of the desert, passing the classic sites of these stages such as the Al Qudra Cycletrack and the Meydan Racecourse. It then reaches the Dubai Safari Park. The entire route winds along very wide and essentially straight, roads interspersed with roundabouts that have a very large radius and are well paved.

Final kilometers: The finale is on a wide avenue, with a 700 m straight.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage five summary:

Tim Merlier extends his UAE Tour record by securing his sixth victory in the fastest-ever stage (48.571 km/h) of the One and Only UCI WorldTour race in the Middle East. It was once again Tadej Pogacar who shook the things up. The Red Jersey, along with Black Jersey holder Djordje Djuric and defending champion Lennart Van Eetvelt, joined an early-stage breakaway that animated the first part of the race.

Red jersey Tadej Pogacar leads the early break.

Thanks to the Intermediate Sprints, Pogacar and Van Eetvelt gained 3” over their GC competitors. With 39 km to go, the peloton reeled in the breakaway, setting the stage for a sprinter showdown. After a crash little over 3 km to go, the final sprint battle was between Merlier and Green Jersey holder Milan. This time it was the European Champion who had the best, while Malucelli edged out his compatriot with a last-second bike throw to claim second place.

Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Tim Merlier said: “I was thinking during the race that maybe I could win the fastest ever stage of the UAE Tour. This is a WorldTour race so it’s a very important one for all of us. Yesterday there were several moves in the wind, then I couldn’t find any slipstream anymore, I had to pass two riders to choose my moment and I saw Jonathan Milan was already starting his sprint. I was lacking a bit of speed. Today, I was coming back from a pee stop when Tadej Pogacar attacked and we started pulling then we asked help from other teams. The guys did a very good job to bring it back. I’m very satisfied with today’s victory”.

Tadej Pogacar retains the GC leader's red jersey.

The Red Jersey Tadej Pogacar said: ““It was not the plan to extend my lead throughout time bonuses today but the move happened in a funny moment just like last year at Volta Catalunya when Domen [Novak] came with me to the front but today, other guys followed as well and it turned out to be a breakaway. We just sort of commit but we tried not to spend too much. It was a good day out, trying to keep the breakaway alive. We finished the stage much faster because of that. In the finale, my team-mates tried to make a bubble around me behind the sprinters’ teams, just to stay safe. For 90% of the peloton, it was a comfortable day on the road”.

The Green Jersey Jonathan Milan said: “It was a difficult finale and [team-mate] Simone [Consonni] crashed, quite far away from the end. But he was feeling good so we tried to move together. It just happens that in the last kilometres sometimes you miss each other, it’s important to learn from a situation like today’s and to keep pushing and looking for other victories. Tomorrow we have another good stage. I’m looking forward to it although I’m starting to feel the heat but I still have good legs. Congratulations to Tim Merlier for his win today. He did a nice sprint”.

Epictetus' Golden Sayings

Stoic philosopher Epictetus' Golden Sayings is available in both audiobook & Kindle eBook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Umm Al Quwain at 9:00 AM, local time: 20C (68F), fair, with the wind from the southeast at 3 km/hr (2 mph). There is a 3% chance of rain, rising to 8% at 2:00 PM. The temperature is projected to climb to 25C (77F) by 1:00 PM.

The stage: Starting in Fujairah Qidfa Beach to reach Umm Al Quwain, the stage crosses the desert areas on the edge of the Hajar Mountains. It touches the largest number of Emirates of all the stages. After Masafi, the desert route diverges from the direct highway, mostly following wide, well-paved and straight roads leading to the final sprint in Umm al Quwain. Wind and occasional sand might be determining factors.
Final kilometers: The final km is on a wide avenue.

The race: Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Jonathan Milan said: “I think I started sprinting a bit too early. At the end, this throw of the bike made the difference in my favour on the photo-finish. I’m really happy with the result. I was looking forward to this. Echelons always make races more interesting. They are important ahead of the classics to get used to how to move. We were always inside [the first group], we were ready for them. We moved in a perfect way today. It’s easier with this team to deliver this kind of result. It hurt the legs and made a bit of a selection. We’re here to win as much as possible”.

Here's the race organizer's stage four report:

Umm Al Quwain, 20 February 2025 – After winning the opening stage, Jonathan Milan doubles his tally with a photo-finish victory in stage 4 of the UAE Tour. The Lidl-Trek sprinter launched his sprint early and held off a late comeback from Belgian rivals Merlier and Philipsen, securing his third win of the season.

The TAQA Stage saw a chaotic finale, with the peloton splitting multiple times due to the fierce winds—though never catching Red Jersey wearer Tadej Pogačar off guard. The Slovenian remains firmly in control of the general classification, while the Green Jersey now belongs to Jonathan Milan, and the Black Jersey is taken over by Dorde Duric.

Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Jonathan Milan said: “I saw Tim Merlier coming very fast, then I waited for the photo finish and I eventually was told that I won but I didn’t know. In my first years as a pro, I wasn’t so successful because I had to gain experience first, learn how to move. Step by step, I got there. Today’s stage gives me a lot of confidence for Milano-Sanremo considering the level of the sprinters at the UAE Tour but Milano-Sanremo has a different finale. We knew there was a high chance of echelons with the wind there was today, but we were always ready and always in the front group”.

Tadej Pogacar will start stage five in the red GC leader's jersey. Sprint Cycling photo

The Red Jersey Tadej Pogacar said: “My aim in the echelons was staying safe and not losing time. In the echelons, you have fun if you are in the front group and you don’t if you are behind. It wasn’t our initiative, we followed the moves. I’m always up for action anyway. I enjoyed it today. The team did an amazing job staying in the front when it was important. It was hard but we had some fun. I thought it would be safer to have a sprint in a reduced group. Some people think we have easy stages at the UAE Tour but so far, there has been some action every day. It also makes it a good preparation race for the classics”.

STATISTICS

  • Jonathan Milan records his 2nd win at the UAE Tour, becoming the most successful Italian rider in this race.
  • 19th professional win for Jonathan Milan, already the 3rd this year. Last year he finished the season with 11 wins, with only one as early as February.
  • Jonathan Milan joins Sam Bennett (2021), Jasper Philipsen (2022), Tadej Pogacar (2022) and Tim Merlier (2023): the only riders who scored 2 wins in one edition at the UAE Tour. The record is just one win away: Merlier won 3 times last year.

Weather at Jebel Jais at 9:00 AM local time: 16C (61F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 6 km/hr (4 mph). No rain is forecast. The temperature is forecast to climb to 18C (64F) by 1:00 PM.

The stage: The first of the two mountain stages of this UAE Tour. The stage is divided into two distinct parts. The first one approaches the final mountain by undulating through the desert, while the last one features approximately 20 km of continuous climbing all the way to the finish. Starting in Ras al Khaimah, the race reaches Al Marjan Island and returns to the desert. After the Ras al Khaimah airport, the race heads straight for Jais Mountain. The final climb is approximately 20 km long with a constant 5% gradient, with slightly higher gradients around 7% in the last 2 km.

Final kilometers
The final climb winds through hairpin bends on a very wide roadway. Gradients are mainly around 4-5% in the first part and 5-7% in the second one, peaking at 9% around 2 km from the finish. The finish is on straight asphalt roads.

The race: Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and new Red Jersey Tadej Pogacar said: “It feels amazing to get the first win of the year, finally back racing and super happy with a victory after three days. It was hard for the guys to control the race because it was a long stage. We got no help whatsoever until the final climb. We executed the plan very well. Everybody in the team deserves the victory. We asked Ineos if they wanted to pay honor to the jersey but Rune [Herregodts] was left pulling all day. Lotto helped us a bit and we tried to do the climb at our pace. It’s special to win in the UAE with the rainbow jersey. Part of me was hoping that Joshua Tarling would hold on to the bunch and retain the red jersey but I’ll be more than happy to wear the race leader’s jersey tomorrow. The GC is not over though. In three flat stages, you never know what can happen here. Tomorrow we’ll only past half way into the race”.

Here's the race organizer's stage three report:

Jebel Jais, 19 February 2025 – Tadej Pogačar claims his first victory of 2025 at Jebel Jais, outpowering his rivals in an uphill sprint launched from the front in the last 300 meters. The Slovenian, now tied with Tim Merlier at five stage wins in the UAE Tour, perfectly executed his team’s strategy, as they controlled most of the final climb. An attack by Felix Gall at 1,500 meters from the finish put Red Jersey Joshua Tarling in trouble, but the UAE Team Emirates – XRG responded immediately, with an impressive Jay Vine setting up Pogačar. In the general classification, the Slovenian now leads with an 18-second advantage over Tarling, who retained the White Jersey, and 23 seconds over Castrillo.

Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner and new Red Jersey Tadej Pogacar said: “Everybody watching this race knows that Jebel Jais is windy. It meant the guys pulling were suffering quite a lot but when you’re in the bunch, it’s not like that. Today’s race was no science fiction. I was hoping for Joshua Tarling to stay closer and keep the red jersey so I would have continued racing in the rainbow jersey.

"At the end I’m happy to lead the race but we also know that Jebel Jais isn’t very suitable for making differences. Every year we hear that this is a sprint of the GC riders. It’s easier to have bigger gaps in steeper climbs, not only for me but in general. It’s great that my parents finally have a chance to come here and watch this race. They’re enjoying it and I also enjoyed to see them on the start line and know that they’d be here at the finish. Today is a confirmation that my winter training has been good. But I already had that feeling yesterday. It’s a motivation booster”.

The White Jersey Joshua Tarling said: “I’m satisfied with how it went. It was quite a smooth pace the whole way up so I’ve settled into a rhythm until Decathlon-AG2R started to really ramp it so with one and half kilometre to get, I was a bit off the back but I some left to keep the pace uphill. We a nice few safe stages and I’ll head into the last day the same way we did today for me and Carlos [Rodriguez]”.

STATISTICS

  • 5th stage win at the UAE Tour for Tadej Pogacar, equalling Tim Merlier for the record.
  • Tadej Pogacar recorded his 89th professional win, the first this season. His wait for a win was 130 days: since he won Il Lombardia last October.
  • Only 2 riders won stages at the UAE Tour wearing the Rainbow Jersey: Alejandro Valverde in Jebel Hafeet in 2019 and Tadej Pogacar in Jebel Jais this year.
  • Oscar Onley posted his 2nd season podium. He was 2nd, like in the 5th stage of the Tour Down Under in Willunga Hill.

Tour de France: 2019

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2019: A Year of New Faces is available in both Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the Al Hudayriyat Island race site at 8:40 AM, local time: 23C (73F), fair, with the wind from the north at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 3% chance of rain. The temperature is forecast to climb to 24C (76F) at 1:00 PM.

The stage: Stage 2 is an Individual Time Trial that takes place entirely inside Al Hudayriyat Island. The route is very fast and features only a few right-angle bends and two U-turns. The road is perfectly flat, wide and with sweeping turns, which will allow the riders to maintain very high speeds (wind permitting).

Final kilometers: Wide curves, wide road, excellent pavement. The finish line is on asphalt.

The race: Team Visma | Lease a bike riders Olav Kooij and Julien Vermote are both ill and did not start the stage. Sebastian Molano (UAE Team Emirates) crashed near the end of stage one and also did not start.

Joshua Tarling on his way to winning the stage.

Here is the race organizer's stage two report:

Al Hudayriyat Island, 18 February 2025 – Joshua Tarling confirmed his status as main favorite, setting a record speed for the UAE Tour at 56.671 km/h and becoming the youngest rider to wear the Red Jersey. The British champion covered the 12.2 km of the Tudor ITT in a time of 12’55”, beating Stefan Bissegger by 13” and Tadej Pogacar by 18”. Further back among the GC contenders, Pello Bilbao finished at 39”, Giulio Ciccone at 42”, Carlos Rodriguez at 43”, Alexey Lutsenko at 45”, and defending champion Lennert Van Eetvelt at 46”. Behind them the former Red Jersey Jonathan Milan, who finished at 1’13”. Tomorrow, the Ras Al Khaimah-Jebel Jais will represent the first big chance for the climbers.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and new Red Jersey Joshua Tarling said: “From the end of last year I kept having bad luck and coming second to Remco [Evenepoel] in the TTs. So I needed this, so badly. I had a good winter. I went to the Teide with the team. I got confidence for today. The first part was very windy with a headwind then a long crosswind section. The first part was the hardest then I got my respite with the corners towards the end. It was kind of two halves. 56.6km/h, that was cool! Now that I have the confidence back, I’m excited for tomorrow’s hard stage, the coming weekend and the rest of the season”.

And Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner and Red Jersey Joshua Tarling said: “I had a bit of a bumpy end of last season, I just needed to regain confidence and it’s exciting to be here for that. It was a mix of bad luck and competing against guys like Remco [Evenepoel] and [Filippo] Ganna. After the Olympics, I was struggling a bit at la Vuelta. I did my first altitude training camp at the Teide to prepare for today’s time trial. I had more chances to beat Tadej [Pogacar] on a flat course like this. I used a 68×11 gear. I’m not going to let the jersey go easy tomorrow. Carlos [Rodriguez] is a better climber than me, and obviously there’s Tadej, but I’ll try to hold on as long as I can. The season looks pretty good this year”.

Weather at the finish city of Liwa at 9:00 AM, local time: 22C (72F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 18 km/hr (11 mph). The temperature is forecast to climb to 29C (85F) at 1:00 PM.

There is a 1% chance of rain, growing to 24% at 4:00 PM.

The stage: The desert stage. The first part (north-south direction) is about 45 km long, on wide, straight roads. After reaching Liwa, the race enters an area of very pronounced dunes, which make up most of the stage. A series of ups and downs leads to Moreeb Dune, where the race will take two laps of the Moreeb Dune cycle path (18.1 km each lap), marked by rather steep climbs and descents with double digit gradients. It then returns to Liwa for the finish. The stage is on wide, straight roads with good pavement.

Final kilometers: The stage finale features a wide bend on a roundabout. The home straight is all uphill, around 5%.

The peloton speeds across the desert.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage one report:

First UAE Tour victory for the Lidl-Trek sprinter, who also claims the Red Jersey as the overall leader ahead of Philipsen – later relegated from 2nd to 52nd – and Fisher-Black. Tomorrow, a battle against the clock awaits on Al Hudayriyat Island.

Liwa Palace, 17 February 2025 – Jonathan Milan claims victory on the challenging finish at Liwa Palace, securing his first-ever win at the UAE Tour and wearing the Red Jersey as the overall leader for the first time. The Lidl-Trek rider, who had already won a stage at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana earlier this season, timed his sprint perfectly to edge out Jasper Philipsen – later relegated to 52nd place for irregular sprinting – and Finn Fisher-Black in a thrilling finale.

With this victory, Milan also takes the lead in both the Green Jersey and White Jersey classifications, while the Black Jersey for intermediate sprints goes to Manuele Tarozzi, the last breakaway rider to be caught by the peloton. Tomorrow, the individual time trial on Al Hudayriyat Island will serve as the first real test for the GC contenders.

Stage 1 profile

The race organizer posted this preview to the 2025 UAE Tour:

The one and only UCI World Tour race in the Middle East kicks off tomorrow with the Desert Stage. Grand finale on Sunday in Jebel Hafeet. Great anticipation for the season debut of world champion and two-time winner Tadej Pogačar and for the 2024 champion Lennert Van Eetvelt. Jasper Philipsen, Tim Merlier, Jonathan Milan, and Olav Kooij headline the list of world class sprinters.

It's about time for these gents to race.

United Arab Emirates, 16 February 2025 – A total of 140 riders will line up tomorrow for the opening stage of the seventh edition of the UAE Tour, organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council. The one and only UCI WorldTour race in the Middle East will once again feature a star-studded field.

Among the many big names at the start, the most anticipated is Tadej Pogačar. The world champion, UCI ranking leader, and two-time UAE Tour winner (2021 and 2022) will make his season debut, facing off against defending champion Lennert Van Eetvelt, the breakout star of 2024 and winner on Jebel Hafeet. Other top contenders for the general classification include Pello Bilbao, Carlos Rodríguez, Alexey Lutsenko, Giulio Ciccone, and Einer Rubio.

There is also great excitement for the battle among the sprinters, as many of the world’s fastest finishers will compete in the multiple sprint opportunities throughout the race. Among them are Tim Merlier, the record holder with five stage wins, Jasper Philipsen and Dylan Groenewegen, both with two stage wins each, Olav Kooij, who claimed a stage victory in 2024, and Jonathan Milan, returning to the race after already securing a win early in the season. The list of top sprinters is completed by Fabio Jakobsen, Arvid De Kleijn, Phil Bauhaus, and Sam Welsford.

Tadej Pogacar: “It has always been a dream of mine to be the world champion. Finally I have the rainbow jersey, it feels unreal to ride every day with it and to come here in the home country of the team with this jersey is amazing. It’s great to be able to show it here. So far, I’ve started every single season with some doubts about my preparation. I hope my shape is good enough to compete at the highest level again. Fingers crossed that it’s like last year and the years before. As long as I’m eager and motivated to start the season, I’ll give my best. The time trial is important at the UAE Tour but I don’t think it’ll make a big difference, maybe a few seconds. It’s not long, so I believe the biggest gaps can open in echelons in the crosswinds”.

Lennert Van Eetvelt: “It’s a very nice feeling to come back and see name on the trophy as the defending champion. I have very good memory from winning the Jebel Hafeet stage and GC last year. It was awesome. It was a bit of a surprise and I’m glad to sit here alongside Tadej [Pogacar]. We never want to start a race for finishing second but when he starts, it’s hard to compete with him and being realistic, it’s a race for the second place”.

Tim Merlier: “It would be nice to make a hat trick with winning stage 1 once again. But the competition is very high with a lot of top sprinters on the start line. It looks from my first race that my legs are good and I’ll have some opportunities to try and win a stage here”.

Jasper Philipsen: “The UAE Tour is a really good race to start with because it lasts for one week and there’s a very competitive field of sprinters. This year in particular, it’s great to start here with a nice weather, one week before the opening weekend in Belgium. There won’t be many sprints before the first classics so it’s nice to test the sprinting legs here”.

Jonathan Milan: “The UAE Tour is an important race and a good one to start with. The level of the competitors is very high. I’ll be looking for a victory with the help of a strong team, I’m pretty confident”.

Pello Bilbao: “We all know the two classical climbs of the UAE Tour. They are single climbs at end of a stage. It’s kind of a test for all riders. This time around, we know how complicated it’ll be to fight for the victory but we’re here to give a good challenge. The only way to beat Tadej [Pogacar] would be to surprise him on a flat section but even that, we know it’ll be very difficult. Being short, the time trial might be important for the podium but not for the overall victory”.
