Tadej Poacar

Tadej Pogacar (left) just beats Alexey Lutsenko to win the stage.

Weather at Abu Dhabi at 4:30 PM, local time: 22C (72F), fair, with the wind from the west-northwest at 27 km/hr (17 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Tadej Pogacar's UAE-Team Emirates.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Tadej Pogačar took a significant win on home soil for UAE Team Emirates on stage 5 of the UAE Tour from Al Ain to Jebel Hafeet (162k).

Pogačar was first to attack with 4.5km to go, which reduced the group to six of the top placed riders. It would later come down to a battle between the top four with Pogačar and race leader Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) marking each other closely. Pogačar played it smart, marking Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) in the sprint before coming around him in the dash for the line.

His teammate, Davide Formolo, who was key in setting up the victory finished just behind in 6th place. Pogačar remains second in the overall and wears the white jersey as the leader of the young rider classification.

Stage 6 tomorrow will see the race return to the flat as the riders go from Al Ruwais to Al Mirfa (158k) which will be the last showdown for the sprinters.

Pogačar : “It was an amazing win. On the climb I tried to attack over five times but I saw Yates was strong so I played it smart and waited for the sprint. I started the sprint quite early because I knew the last corner was crucial. We took the corner side by side but I kept fighting and pushing until the line. I saw the gap in the last metres and I threw the bike and won in the end. The whole team worked perfectly today. This was my first big goal of the year and a home win for the team is really incredible.”

Stage 4 map & profile

Dylan Groenewegen

Dylan Groenewegen is the day's fastest rider.

Weather at Dubai at 4:20 PM, local time: 25C (77F), widespread dust, with the wind from the west-northwest at 24 km/hr (15 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Dylan Groenewegen's Jumbo-Visma team.

Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies

Dylan Groenewegen has won the fourth stage in the UAE Tour. The leader of Team Jumbo-Visma was brought to the sprint in an ideal position by his teammates. Groenewegen outsprinted all top sprinters in Dubai.

For Groenewegen it is his third victory of the season. Earlier this month he already won two stages in the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana. The resident of Amsterdam is therefore the first Dutchman to win a World Tour race this year. For Team Jumbo-Visma it is also the third victory of the new cycling season.

The stage was perfectly controlled by the sprinter’s teams including Team Jumbo-Visma. The two riders in the breakaway were reeled in in the final ten kilometres after which Team Jumbo-Visma took the initiative in the last three. In the hectic and nervous final, Groenewegen was well positioned for the sprint by Tony Martin, Jos van Emden, Timo Roosen and Christoph Pfingsten. Groenewegen launched his sprint from behind Sam Bennett and timed his sprint at the right time.

“This is a very good win. I am very pleased”, Groenewegen said. “I beat the world’s best sprinters today. This is a really sweet victory. In the first stage I probably had the fastest sprint of all, but I was not well positioned. That meant I had to come from too far. Today it was a totally different sprint. The boys did a perfect lead-out. It was a hectic final, but everyone really had his share in my stage win. They all went flat-out. We decided to move up to the front in the last three kilometres because of the strong headwind. Christoph (Pfingsten) has the eye to put me in the best position for the sprint. Then I perfectly timed my sprint. I am happy that I was able to finish off the team’s work.”

Grischa Niermann had seen a very strong team. “The intention was to bring Dylan in fifth or sixth position to the final corner. That worked out. This allowed him to time his sprint perfectly. This is a very nice win. The team was very strong. We have two more sprint opportunities this week and we will go all-in to try and win more stages.”

Epictetus' Golden Sayings

The race: Here's the report from winner Adam Yates' Mitchelton-Scott team.

Adam Yates has climbed to his first race win of the season in a dominant display up the Jebel Hafeet climb on stage three of the UAE Tour.

The Brit launched his attack inside the final six kilometres, initially taking two riders with him before attacking again to win solo by over one minute at the line.

In contrast to the previous two days, the start of stage three was a hectic one with a brief threat of wind making for a nervous bunch. Mitchelton-SCOTT we’re keeping a watching eye on proceedings before a break was eventually allowed to go clear.

The four rider move opened up a gap of over seven minutes as the peloton eased up before it settled around the five minute mark for most of the stage. Several crashes caused some unrest in the peloton until UAE-Team Emirates increased the tempo and took control.

The race came to life with around 20 kilometres to go as various teams began to bring their general classification contenders up to the front. The increase in pace saw the gap to the break shrink rapidly and it was all back together at the foot of the climb.

Slovenian Luka Mezgec set a strong pace for Yates on the lower slopes before Ethiopian Tsgabu Grmay took over to control the gap to a lone attacker. Having seen enough, Yates launched his move, racing past the lone leader with two riders for company.

With little commitment from his fellow attackers, Yates jumped again with five kilometres to go and opened up a gap of 40 seconds. Tadej Pogačar (UAE-Team Emirates) attempted to chase, but he couldn’t make any inroads to the advantage of the flying Brit who raced away to take the stage by over one minute.

The victory propels Yates into the overall race lead by a margin of 1'07", with tomorrow's flat stage to come before another summit finish up Jebel Hafeet on stage five.

Adam Yates:
"It is my first race of the season, so it was difficult for me to estimate where I stood compared to the competition. Certainly with today's heat, it’s difficult to estimate, I think it was 37 to 38 degrees all day. I just wanted to test the legs to see where I am."

“That was perhaps a little too early [to attack], but I felt good. A few boys came along and behind me I could see that they organised themselves. I just went for it then.”

“We have to climb this climb again and maybe my legs are not so good then. I’ve heard about tomorrow's stage that winds might be coming. We will see."

Julian Dean (Sports Director):
“It was a really gutsy effort by Adam. He’s confident and came in here really confident, he’s had a good winter, he’s been training hard, spending time at altitude and doing all the right things and when you come to your first race of the season you can enter with confidence as he’s done and perform like he did today.

"It’s a pretty big stamp that he’s put on the rest of the field today, a big gap there over one minute. There’s still some work to do, we’ve got a couple of windy days coming up as well so that will be quite nervous. We’ll try and get through those and we’ll be back here in two days time."

Caleb Ewan

Caleb Ewan is a little faster than Sam Bennett up the steep finishing hill at Hatta Dam.

Weather at the turnaround city of Fujairah at 4:45 PM, local time: 27C (80F), fair, with the wind fron the east-nourthest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Caleb Ewan's Lotto-Soudal team.

Plato's Apology

In a steep uphill sprint, Lotto Soudal’s Caleb Ewan triumphed for the second consecutive year on Hatta Dam at the end of stage 2 of the UAE Tour. Ewan was faster and stronger than Sam Bennett, Arnaud Démare and Diego Ulissi. The victory brings Ewan into the red jersey of the overall leader of the race as former GC leader Pascal Ackermann was dropped on the penultimate climb.

“It was a really tough finish”, said Caleb Ewan. “We thought that it might be a little bit harder than last year as the profile looked to be harder, but there was no wind, it was pretty straightforward. The last climbs were really hard of course, but my team did just a great job to drop me off in that final corner, and in the best position possible. I have to thank them for this victory.”

It was Ewan’s teammate Jasper De Buyst who lead out the sprint for the Australian, who remained calm and patient when Sam Bennett hit out with more than 150 meters to go. In the very steep final part, Ewan passed the Irish rider.

“I could have gone from the bottom as well, as Sam Bennett did, but I knew that it’s better to wait a few seconds because it is in that last twenty meters that you can really win a race and that’s what I did. I’ve waited for those last 20 or 30 meters because if you blow there, you can lose so much time. I knew how long I could go for, I timed my sprint really well and I could accelerate all the way to the line.”

Caleb Ewan leads the UAE Tour after two stages. Bennett and Démare are second and third, 12 and 16 seconds behind respectively.

“It’s always nice to lead a Tour. I lead Tour Down Under earlier this year and now I’m leading UAE Tour. So, the season is going well so far”, concluded Caleb Ewan.

Pascal Ackermann takes the first stage.

Weather at Dubai at 5:30 PM, local time: 26C (79F), fair, with the wind from the north-northwest at 18 km/h (11mph).

The race: Here's the stage summary from winner Pascal Ackermann's Bora-hansgrohe team.

Bicycle History

A day for the fast men – and for Pascal Ackermann. Already before the start of today’s 148 km opening stage of the UAE Tour 2020 in Dubai the chances for a potential sprint were high.

A group of four riders formed early on, leading the way for much of the stage, holding the chasing peloton at bay with around two minutes advantage most of the day. When the last escapees were caught nine kilometres to go, it finally all came down to the expected bunch sprint.

n a chaotic finale, Ackermann started his sprint very early and managed to surprise the other favourites. With a strong performance on the last metres, the BORA-hansgrohe rider took the win ahead of Caleb Ewan and Rudy Barbier. It was Ackermanns second win this season and the first WorldTour victory for Bora-hansgrohe in 2020. With his opening victory, Ackermann also took the overall lead in the general classification.

From the Finish Line:
"Wow! I'm still a little bit speechless about this victory. All the big sprinter names are present and coming here I wasn’t sure I had the shape to win. The last kilometres were a bit chaotic, but when I saw a gap opening in front of me with 300 metres to go, I just went for it. It was a very long sprint and I'm really happy that I could start the UAE Tour 2020 with such a big result. I want to thank my teammates who brought me to a very good position in the finale. We can now take it a bit easier, but we will, of course, try our best to win more stages." – Pascal Ackermann

"Our goal was to set Pascal Ackermann for the expected sprint finish. Since there are a lot of sprinter teams here, we knew that the finale would be a very hard one. That’s why we tried to save as much energy as possible during the stage. In the last kilometres, Michael Schwarzmann and Rüdiger Selig prepared the sprint for Pascal which was not easy as many teams tried to set up their sprint trains at the same time. Pascal did an awesome job which makes us confident for the next days. We have a very strong team here at UAE Tour that can get victories in both stages and GC." – Enrico Poitschke, Sports Director
