Tour de France: the Inside Story

The Race: Tim Wellens, who said he felt ill at the start of the stage, finished with the peloton to win the Eneco Tour.

An early break of about twenty riders went clear. From this move, with about thirty kilometers to go, Guillaume van Keirsbulck bolted. Riding strongly, he was able to enlarge his gap as he got closer to the line to finish 46 seconds clear of his nearest chasers.

There was some fussing in the pack as Niki Terpstra (Omega Pharma) and Maarten Wynants bumped each other around a bit. The judges didn't think much of it, disqualifying Terpstra and penalizing Wynants a minute.

Tour de France: the Inside Story

The Race: Tim Wellens delivered an impressive performance today that gave him both the stage win and the overall lead with just one stage remaining in the Eneco Tour.

Wellens was alone and off the front with ten kilometers to go. Though race leader Tom Dumoulin gave a hard chase, Wellens was on song today and crossed the line nearly a minute ahead of Lars Boom. With the winner's 10-second bonification Wellens went from being 49 seconds down to the leader with a seven-second lead over Lars Boom.

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

The Race: This was a hard stage, a mini Ronde van Vlaanderen with thirteen climbs.

The man who has always been a bridesmaid this season (second at Flanders and Het Nieuwsblad, to name two) has won his first race of the season. Greg van Avermaet went past Pavel Brutt, who had gone earlier on the Geraardsbergen, to take the win.

Tom Dumoulin's second place gave him six incredibly valuable bonus seconds. Valuable because Dumoulin is now the GC leader over Lars Boom (who came in fifth and out of the bonificatons) by just two seconds.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

The Race: Nacer Bouhanni notched his first win since the Giro d'Italia where he won the points classification. It was the FDJ rider's ninth victory this season. He came off the wheel of Jens Debusschere to easily take the stage.

Near the finish, a touch of wheels caused 2013 Eneco Tour winner Zdenek Stybar to do a horrible faceplant. He was ambulanced off with a neck brace.

Race leader Lars Boom finished 26th at the same time as Bouhanni to preserve his overall lead.

Tomorrow will be a hard stage with lots of climbing, including ascents of the Bosberg and Grammont.

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

The Race: The Dutch took over today. Tom Dumoulin, the Dutch time trial champion, won the stage, besting Mr. Time Trial himself, Fabian Cancellara, by two seconds.

The other Dutchman, Lars Boom, was 18 seconds slower than his compatriot, but it was good enough to allow him to wrest the lead from Zdebek Stybar. Boom now leads Dumoulin in the GC by four seconds. Stybar dropped to fifth place.

Boom is having a wonderful year. It was Lars Boom who won the Tour de France's staggeringly difficult Belgian fifth stage with it's slippery cobblestones that forced Chris Froome to abandon after crashing.

Bicycle History

The Race: 2013 Eneco Tour winner Zdenek Stybar is back in the lead after winning stage two.

It was another rainy day in northern Europe and only twenty riders arrived in the front group to contest the stage.

A trio, Kevin van Melsen, Pavel Brutt and Alexis Gougeard, escaped early on and gained nearly six minutes, but all three (Brutt being the last to give up) had been rounded up with a little more the four kilometers to go.

Czech road champion Stybar's stage win earned him a 10-second bonification, enough to give him the GC lead by a single second over Lars Boom.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is a 9.6 km individual time trial at Breda (Netherlands). Expect some serious changes to the GC.

Tour de France: the Inside Story

The Race: It was a messy, crash-strewn day. Between the rain, wind and road furniture, riders were going down all day.

Early on three riders, Gatis Smukulis, Laurens de Vreese and Kenneth van Bilsen, escaped and built a nearly 10-minute lead. In the windy, wet weather the peloton was under enormous tress and would break apart into echelons.

Giant-Shimano rider Tom Dumoulin tried a flier with about a kilometer to go, but he was doomed.

There was a big group for the final rush to the line (see photo above), won by Andrea Guardini who also became the GC leader.
