The Race:
The 1981 Paris-Rouabix was 263 km long and raced at an average speed of 40.87 km/hr.
There were 174 starters and 57 classified finishers.
The cobbles were a wet, slippery, muddy mess.
Bernard Hinault, wearing his world championship jersey dominated the others most of the race. Six riders came into the Roubaix velodrome and from 400 meters back Hinault wound out his huge 53 x 13 gear.
Marc Demeyer drew close but Hinault surged and then de Vlaeminck came at him, but Hinault could not be beat.
He had finally won on the pavé he called "those swinish cobbles".
