The Race:
The 1976 Paris-Roubaix was 270.5 km long and araced at an average speed of 40.81 km/hr.
There were 154 starters and 38 classified finishers.
Roger de Vlaeminck dropped the hammer with 31 kilometers to go and took only four riders with him: Marc Demeyer, Francesco Moser, Hennie Kuiper and Walter Godefroot.
Godefroot said he enjoying superb form, but he flatted and never regained the others. De Vlaeminck felt confident and pulled for much of the last 20 kilometers and led out the sprint on the Roubaix velodrome.
Moser came around de Vlaeminck and then the Belgian giant, Marc Demeyer went past them both.
Eddy Merckx had a terrible day. Because of flat tires, crashes and mechanical problems, he had to change his bike ten times.
Demeyer suffered a fatal heart attack in January of 1982.
Big Marc Demeyer surprises Francesco Moser and Roger de Vlaeminck in the sprint to win a big one.
