Tour de France: 2019

Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2019: A Year of New Faces is available as an audiobook here. For the Kindle eBook version, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

The Race:

The 1971 Paris-Roubaix 265.2 km long and raced at an average speed of 42.11 km/hr.

There were 135 starters and 45 classified finishers

With about thirty kilometers to go, Eric de Vlaeminck left the leading group of twelve.

Very quickly Roger Rosiers bridged up to him and then, feeling very strong, left de Vlaeminck behind. Despite a chasing group that included Eddy Merckx, Jan Janssen and Felice Gimondi, Rosiers extended his lead with every pedal stroke.

His win was particularly admirable given he had suffered one crash and two flat tires.
