The race:
The 1920 Paris-Roubaix was 280 km long and was raced at 25.95 km/hr
There were 93 starters and 22 classified finishers
It was a tough day with icy rain.
Attrition brought the lead group down to four: Lucien Buysse, Paul Deman, Honoré Barthélémy and Henri Pélissier, two Belgians and two Frenchmen.
By the time Deman was within two kilometers of Roubaix, he had lost the others; Pélissier suffered a puncture and Buysse and Barthélémy had mechanical trouble.
Deman, the winner of the first Tour of Flanders in 1913, had started the 1920 Paris-Roubaix just to see if he could finish it.
Indeed he could.
Winner Paul Deman
