The race: On the steep Côte de La Roche aux Faucons, Vincenzo Nibali attacked and got a small gap at the hill's crest. The riders in his small front group looked at each other for just a moment, to see who would chase. In a flash, Nibali, maybe the best descender in the pro peloton, was gone. Close to the finish, as Nibali began to tire, Maxim Iglinsky left the chasers behind, caught Nibali. He hesitated a moment, and then with a turn of the big gear, left Nibali for dead and headed for the biggest win of his career.
