September 23: Elite Men's individual Time Trial, 53 km/ 32.9 miles
Vasil Kiryienka riding to his gold medal
The race: Vasil Kiryienka of Belarus was clearly the day's fastest rider, turning in the best time at each check point. Kiryienka blistered the course at nearly 51 kilometers an hour. That big chainring on his bike in the photo above wasn't put there just to impress the tifosi. He turned it at a good cadence, with power and authority.
Rohan Dennis's name was on many observers' lips as a potential winner today. He was fourth when he was forced to make a bike change. Dennis ended up sixth, more than a minute behind Kiryienka.
Tony Martin was considered a possible winner, but this was not his day. The German was sixth, 77 seconds slower than Kiryienka.
