Ilnur Zakarin

Ilnur Zakarin wins stage 17

Rated ascents:

Weather: At Aigle, Switzerland (km 123, before the Col de la Forclaz) at 1:23 PM it is 31C (87F) and sunny. The wind is from the NW at 10 km/hr (6mph). No rain is forecast.

The Race: 181 riders signed in after the withdrawals of Mark Cavendish and Rohan Dennis. The official start of this beast of a stage was given at 12:16 PM. Almost immediately there was a crash, forcing Gorka Izagirre to quit the Tour with a probable broken collarbone.

Though there were many attacks, all were brought back and sixty kilometers into the stage, the peloton was still together.

The real action began on the day's first rated climb, the Côte de Saanenmöser. Eventually eleven riders went clear, including Jarlinson Pantano, Peter Sagan, Rafal Majka and Tony Gallopin. By kilometer 78 they had a gap of more than three minutes with eight chasing riders in between.

Rafal Majka was first over the Col de Mosses and halfway down the third-category climb with about 65 kilometers to go, the eleven breakaways were eleven minutes in front of the peloton. Soon after, three more riders (including Thomas Voeckler!) joined the break to swell it to 14.

Borut Bozic (Cofidis) finally had to call it a Tour after crashing twice. And, after winning the intermediate sprint (km 150) and content with his sprinter's points harvest, Peter Sagan went back to the peloton.

On the first-category Forclaz, Astana rider Alexey Lutsenko went clear of the break, while the gap back to the peloton was now eleven minutes. Movistar had been leading the pack but, Sky took over the job of tapping out a steady, difficult pace.

Lutsenko was caught and the Astana began leading the pack, causing Tejay van Garderen to be dropped.

Rafal Majka was first over the Forclaz, followed by Thomas Voeckler with the pack ten minutes behind. Now there were 18 kilometers to go, eighteen seriously difficult kilometers to go.

On the Finhaut-Emosson ascent there were three riders clear, Ilnur Zakarin, Rafal Majka and Jarlinson Pantano. The Yellow Jersey group (still ten minutes back) was down to just twenty riders with Vincenzo Nibali taking the point.

Bam! With 6.6 kilometers left, Zakarin goes clear. Pantano goes very deep and is able to bridge up to him. Majka doesn't have the horses to get up to the duo.

Zakarin wanted to be alone. He goes again and this time Pantano has no answer. Back in the ever-shrinking Yellow Jersey group, Nibali kept tapping out a ferocious pace. Froome, Quintana, Bardet, Martin, Mollema, Aru and Yates were still there.

Two kilometers from the summit, Zakarin was still alone. Back in the yellow jersey group, Valverde started pulling and with each of his accelerations, Froome needed time to close the gap. Quintana remain glued to Froome.

Dan Martin gave it a go, got a small gap and was quickly retrieved by Sky, but Valverde was a casualty of the fireworks.

Zakarin wins the stage.

Back with Froome, Richie Porte attacked near the top, putting Bauke Mollema out the back door. Froome accelerated and took Quintana with him. But quickly Quintana had to relent, allowing Froome and Porte to head for the finish with one kilometer to go. Quintana is badly dropped and is passed by others.

Porte beat Froome across the line, but Froome remains the GC leader with four stages to go.

After the race Zakarin said, "After I crashed at the Giro with two days to go, I was very disappointed but I quickly underwent a surgery. I didn't miss any time in my rehabilitation so I could stick to the plan to come to the Tour de France but during the first two weeks, I didn't have any other goal but stay out of trouble and work for Alexander Kristoff.

"The goal was to win a stage in the third week, we're very happy we made it. In the future I want to win a Grand Tour and the Tour de France has my priority. It's the most important race of the year. We'll analyze this season first and then determine which Grand Tour I should target to race for the overall win next year."

Organizer's preview:

Chris Froome has attacked downhill (to Bagnères-de-Luchon, his only stage win so far), on the flat (to Montpellier with Peter Sagan), uphill (to Mont Ventoux, before being stopped by a crash). He's been the best of the GC contenders against the clock in the Ardèche.

He faked an attack to test his rivals on the Grand Colombier. He seems to have the race under his hand for the third time. He can go for the last mountainous part of the race on a defensive mode. His advantage is 1.47 over Bauke Mollema, 2.45 over Adam Yates and 2.59 over Nairo Quintana. It's significant but not enormous. Froome is the only rider who has experienced losing the yellow jersey at Finhaut-Emosson.

It happened at the Critérium du Dauphiné two years ago. Everything seemed under control for Team Sky but Alberto Contador attacked them in the last two kilometers. The hors-category final climb is a grueling one. Lieuwe Westra's stage victory at the Dauphiné recalls the possibility for a winning breakaway in the only entire Swiss stage of the Tour de France. FDJ's Steve Morabito and Sébastien Reichenbach who are the locals might be inspired.
