Weather at the start/finish city of Nice at 1:25 PM, local time: 11C (52F), rain, with the wind from the east at 32 km/hr (20 mp)h. The rain is forecast to continue through the afternoon. Or as the race organizer put it: After seven sunny days, the last day of Paris-Nice will be a rainy one.
The race: There are just 89 riders left to start today's stage. There were seven non-staters: David de la Cruz “got sick overnight”, Astana-Qazaqstan reports on social media. Fabio Felline is the only rider for the Kazakh team still in the race. Groupama-FDJ’s David Gaudu, AG2R-Citroën’s Damien Touzé, Lotto-Soudal’s Matthew Holmes, BikeExchange-Jayco’s Luka Mezgec and Lucas Hamilton, Movistar’s Matteo Jorgenson and Johan Jacobs are also out of the race.
The stage began at 1:44 PM.
On the day's first climb, the Côte de Levens, more riders abandoned: Luke Rowe (INEOS Grenadiers), Otto Vergaerde (Alpecin-Fenix), Michael Morkov (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Albert Torres (Movistar), Campbell Stewart (BikeExchange-Jayco), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM)
Here is the race organizer's stage 8 summary:
Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) shook Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) with a stunning attack on the final day of Paris-Nice, but the Slovenian star retained the overall lead with a strong support from Wout van Aert. The battle was on from the start and the intensity never dropped. Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers) attacked with 50km to go, launching an unbridled battle for the stage win and the overall victory.
Yates went solo with 19km to go, on the steep slopes leading to Col d’Èze. He opened a serious gap but Roglic and Van Aert brought it down to under 10’’ on the final run-in to the Promenade des Anglais, where the Slovenian star sealed his 10th victory in a World Tour stage race, the first in France. Following his show of force along the week, Van Aert takes the green jersey home as the winner of the points classification, Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) dominates the KOM standings and Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) is the best young rider.
All the rankings
The peloton have made it to Nice, but the final stage of the Race to the Sun begins in rainy conditions. 88 riders take the start after the withdrawals of David de la Cruz (Astana-Qazaqstan), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Damien Touzé (AG2R Citroën), Lucas Hamilton, Luka Mezgec (BikeExchange-Jayco), Matteo Jorgenson, Johan Jacobs (Movistar) and Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal).
The explosive course (5 ascents and 2,300m of elevation packed in 115.6km of racing) leads to an all out battle from the start. Attacks fly left and right, but no one manages to get away, even on the first ascent of the day, Côte de Levens (cat. 2). Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) sustains a puncture. His teammate Quentin Pacher goes first over the top to defend the polka dot jersey.
An unbridled stage
The battle is ongoing as attackers try to get away on the Côte de Châteauneuf (cat. 2). But Primoz Roglic’s Jumbo-Visma are determined to control the day, on the ascents, and on the downhills. Splits appear as Mauri Vansevenant (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) goes down. He quickly gets back on his bike, and some 30 riders feature in the bunch as they take on the third ascent of the day, côte de Berre-les-Alpes (cat. 3). Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) also has an incident and calls for the medical car.

Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) sustains a mechanical on the downhill towards Côte de Peille (cat. 1), where Ineos Grenadiers explode the race. Omar Fraile ups the pace… Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) struggles. And Daniel Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers) attacks with 49km to go!
Martinez is unfortunate
Wout van Aert controls for Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). Only Simon Yates (BikeExchange) and Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) can follow them. At the summit, they have opened a gap of 1’ to their first chasers, including Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers), Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) and Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious).
Simon Yates goes for the bonus seconds in La Turbie (km 81.1). Van Aert drives the front group and the situation settles until Martinez suffers a rear wheel puncture with 31km to go. He is caught by the chase group at the bottom of the climb to Col d’Èze, with 21km to go, 40’’ behind the leaders.
Yates threatens Roglic
Yates attacks on the steep slopes of the “chemin des vinaigriers”. Roglic can’t keep up and the British climber goes solo. At the summit, he has opened a gap of 25’’ to Roglic and Van Aert. Quintana trails by 55’’. Martinez, Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) and Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) follow with a gap of 1’25’’.
Yates even brings his lead up to 28’’ on the downhill, but Van Aert and Roglic work together and the gap is down to 8’’ as they enter the last 5km. On the line, Yates takes the stage win 9’’ ahead of Van Aert and Roglic, whose sigh of relief illustrates the intensity of the day’s battles.

Weather at the town of Lantosque, on the route, about 17km from the finish at 1:35 PM, local time: 12C (53F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 14 km/hr (9 mph). There is a 5% chance of rain at 4:00 PM.
The race: There were 103 riders at the start. Max Walscheid (Cofidis), Michael Storer, Kevin Geniets (Groupama-FDJ), Dimitri Claeys (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert), Anthony Turgis and Geoffrey Soupe (TotalEnergies), Yevgeniy Fedorov (Astana-Qazaqstan) were non-starters.
The official start was given at 10:42 AM. Not long into the stage Mike Teunissen (Jumbo-Visma) & Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies) abandoned.
Here's the race organizer's stage seven summary:
Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) tamed the ascent of the Col de Turini to win stage 7 of Paris-Nice 2022, on Saturday. The Slovenian star, who already led the overall standings, attacked 6km away from the summit and controlled his rivals on the final slopes. A strong kick eventually allowed him to power to his 4th stage win in the Race to the Sun, ahead of Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers), winner at Col de Turini in 2019. Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) joins them on the stage and overall podiums. Roglic’s rivals have 115.6km to turn the race upside down with the many traps of the final stage around Nice.
It’s an early start from Nice for the 103 riders still in the race. The possibility to battle for victory on the slopes up Col de Turini attracts many attackers, from the start.

At km 5, 18 riders have opened a gap of 20’’ to the peloton: Ryan Mullen (Borah-Hansgrohe), Fabio Felline (Astana-Qazaqstan), David Gaudu, Olivier Le Gac, Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ), Julien Bernard, Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), Michael Morkov (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Ivan Garcia Cortina, Gregor Muhlberger, Albert Torres (Movistar), Cees Bol, Nico Denz (Team DSM), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Simon Carr, Julius van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost), Franck Bonnamour, Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM).
An all-day battle
Ineos Grenadiers and Arkea-Samsic quickly get into action and control the gap early in the stage. The attackers’ lead reaches 1’55’’ atop the first climb of the day, côte de Coursegoules (km 55), summited first by Denz. The gap drops down to 1 minute on the downhill.
The attackers’ advantage remains stable on the valley leading to the climb of Turini. Gaudu, Pedersen, Bol, Van den Berg and Le Gac are distanced before they reach the bottom of the final ascent: 14.9km with an average gradient of 7.3%. The breakaway explodes on the first slopes. Five riders quickly get away: De Gendt, Bernard, Bonnamour, Pacher and Muhlberger. The latter goes solo with 10.5km to go.
Yates attacks, Roglic dominates
Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers) is the first rider to attack from the GC group, with 7.5km to go. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) reacts and counter-attacks 6km away from the summit. He quickly catches and drops Muhlberger. Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers) is the only rider able to join Roglic at the front.
Daniel Martinez leads Primoz Roglic as the two head for the finish. Photo: ASO/Alex Broadway.
Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) join them at the front just inside the last 3km. The British climber accelerates twice, Quintana struggles to keep up but he manages to get back on each occasion. Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) also managed to join them with 250m to go. But nobody could keep up when Roglic powered to victory.

Weather at the finish city of Aubagne at 1:45 PM, local tme: 15C (59F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 29 km/hr (18 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Again there were several non-starters this morning: Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) was "sick and not able to take the start", he said on Twitter. Astana-Qazaqstan announced Dmitriy Gruzdev did not start today as he’s "sick". The same for Simon Geschke (Cofidis).
Trek-Segafredo’s Markus Hoelgaard is also out "due to fatigue", his team reports. Baptiste Planckaert (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) and Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange-Jayco) are also out of Paris-Nice. That makes a total of 39 abandons so far this Paris-Nice.
This leaves a starting peloton of 115 riders. They rolled by km 0 at 10:40 AM. It will be a long day in the saddle.
A couple of hours into the stage Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Ruben Fernandez (Cofidis), Jordi Walop (B&B Hotels) & Aimé De Gendt (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) quit the race.

Here's the race organizer's stage six summary:
Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) took his first professional victory in spectacular fashion on Friday, as he narrowly edged the sprinters in Aubagne, after 213.6km from Courthézon to Aubagne. The peloton controlled stage 6 all day long but the 23 year-old Frenchman managed to go solo inside the last 10km and to fend off Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) on the line. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) survived the traps of the day to hold on to the yellow and white jersey ahead of the decisive week-end, with a summit finish at Col de Turini on Saturday.
A 115-man peloton take the early start from Courthézon after 6 riders abandon at the start of stage 6. After a 12km battle, Johan Jacobs (Movistar) is the first attacker to make the break. The leader of the KOM standings Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Yevgeniy Fedorov (Astana-Qazaqstan), Julius van den Berg (EF Education-Easypost) and Victor Koretzky (B&B Hotels-KTM) join him at km 14.
The peloton quickly react
Sébastien Grignard (Lotto Soudal) also sets off in pursuit and bridges the gap on the first slopes of the Col de Murs (cat. 2), to be summited at km 36.8. The attackers cover 35km in the first hour of racing to build a lead of 4’30’’. Madouas takes the KOM points at the summit to tighten his grip on the polka dot jersey.
Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo are the first team to react, sending Julien Bernard at the front of the bunch to control the gap. The attackers’ advantage never gets higher than 4’55’’ at km 46. Bryan Coquard’s Cofidis and Biniam Girmay’s Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux also pull the bunch on the valley to bring the gap down to 3’20’’ ahead of the second ascent of the day, Col de Sambuc (cat. 2). Madouas takes 5 KOM points at the summit (km 122.3), and 3 more at Col des Portes (km 131.1).
Attacks on the climb of l'Espigoulier...
The pace is hard despite headwinds blowing from the South-East. This is too much for Grignard, dropped by his breakaway companions with 60km to go. The gap to the bunch is down to 1’45’’ a the bottom of the penultimate climb of the day, Col de Pas de la Couelle. Madouas keeps sweeping the points at the summit (53km to go).
The intensity keeps rising on the way to the final ascent of the day, the cat-1 Col de l’Espigoulier (10.8km, 4.4%). At the bottom, the early attackers are only 1 minute ahead of the peloton. Jacobs attacks and quickly drops everyone but Koretzky. Matthew Holmes bridges the gap from the peloton to the leading duo 6km away from the summit. Julien Bernard is still there to set the pace for Trek-Segafredo. Holmes goes first over the top (28.3km to go) but the peloton only trail by 5’’. The attackers are caught with 27km to go.
... and in an unbridled finale
Soren Kragh Andersen (Team DSM) accelerates on the downhill and splits appear 23km away from the finish. The Dane has a lead of 10’’ at the bottom of the downhill, but Trek-Segafredo reel him in with 15.5km to go. Attacks keep going and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) goes solo with 9km to go.
Mathieu Burgaudeau get his first pro win, and it's a big one.
The gap gets as high as 20’’ with 4km to go but it drops down to under 5’’ for the last kilometre! Mads Pedersen launches a powerful sprint but Burgaudeau fends him off by a bike length on the line!

Here's the race organizer's stage five summary:
Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) had another blast on the roads of the Ardèche, powering to the win in Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut on Thursday. The American talent struggled in the first stages of Paris-Nice, but he bounced back in style to take victory on day 5, after a 39km solo move to distance his breakaway companions. This is McNulty’s third victory of the season, and the second on these roads, a couple of weeks after he claimed the Faun-Ardèche Classic. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) took the yellow and white jersey as his teammate Wout van Aert was dropped on the final ascent of the day. The peloton face more uphill challenges on the way to Aubagne, on Friday, ahead of a mountainous week-end around Nice.
Early battles for the break and the KOM points
The 126 riders left in the peloton are still eager to bring battle with many uphill challenges ahead of them: 5 categorised ascents and a total elevation of 3,350m. It takes 14km of attacks and counter-attacks for a group of 10 riders to break away with Ruben Fernandez (Cofidis), Laurent Pichon (Arkea-Samsic), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates), Michael Morkov (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Soudal), Owain Doull (EF Education-EasyPost), Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) and Franck Bonnamour (B&B Hotels-KTM).
Fernandez (+4’37’’) is the best classified rider on GC, and he leads the virtual standings as the gap increases to 6’05’’ on the first ascent of the day, Croix-de-Chaubouret (km 36.1). Madouas leads the break over the top and takes 10 KOM points to already threaten the polka-dot jersey held by Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal) with 12 points.
McNulty attacks, Van Aert gives up on the jersey
Jumbo-Visma drive the bunch along the climbs and valleys of the day. The gap reaches its maximum at km 110: 7’25’’. The early attackers keep working well together on the climbs of Saint-Jeure-d’Ay (cat. 3), Saint-Romain-de-Lerps (cat. 1) and Côte de Toulaud (cat. 2). Madouas sweeps the KOM points ahead of Vanhoucke.
The breakaway tackle the final ascent of the day, the cat-1 col de la Mure (7.6km, 8.3%), with a lead of 6’. McNulty attacks 6km away from the summit, with 39km to go the finish in Saint-Sauveur-De-Montagut. The race leader Wout van Aert is dropped a few minutes later, when the peloton reach the same slopes.
Martinez attacks Roglic
The American talent flies on the ascent. At the summit, he has opened a gap of 1’ to Vanhoucke, Jorgenson and Bonnamour. Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) trails by 5’20’’ after he attacked on the ascent. The GC group, led by Rohan Dennis for Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) are 15’’ further behind.

McNulty pushes his advantage on the downhill. Behind him, Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers) tries to shake Roglic, but the Slovenian bring the Colombian rider and Guillaume Martin back with 10km to go. Meanwhile, McNulty solos to victory, 1’30’’ ahead of Bonnamour and Jorgenson. Roglic reaches the line in a 16-man group with a gap of 5'43'' to take the leader's jersey.

Weather at the finish town of Montluçon at 1:30 PM, local time: 16C (61F), cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Max Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe) is ill and abandoned the race today. He won Paris-Nice in 2020 & 2021. Ben O'Connor (Ag2r-Citroen) has abandoned because of illness as well.
Dmitriy Gruzdev (Astana-Qazaqstan) was the first rider off the ramp, at 1:05.
Here's the race organizer's stage four summary:
Jumbo-Visma imposed their collective strength again during stage 4 of Paris-Nice with another 1-2-3 for the Dutch squad. Already dominant on day 1, the riders in black and yellow smashed the 13.4km individual time-trial from Domérat to Montluçon. This time, Wout van Aert powered to the stage win and took the yellow and white jersey as the race leader. The ITT Olympic champion Primoz Roglic had the second best time, ahead of the two-time World champion Rohan Dennis. Christophe Laporte finished 11th to stay on the overall podium. Such dominance was witnessed in Paris-Nice 1983, when Sean Kelly led the team Sem-France Loire to two 1-2-3s, in stages 4 and 7 (an ITT). The rivals of Jumbo-Visma will now try to make the most of the mountains to turn the race upside down.
Nearly 49 km/h for Rohan Dennis
The preliminaries of the time trial of the 80th edition are marked by the announcement of the withdrawals of Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), the two-time defending champion who was struggling since the start, and Ben O'Connor, weakened by flu symptoms while he was in 11th position overall. Of the 144 riders remaining, it was the bottom of the hierarchy, Dmitriy Gruzdev, who opened the parade, his time being quickly beaten by the young UAE Emirates rider Finn Fisher-Black, then by Thomas De Gendt. But a very big blow was struck by Australian champion Rohann Dennis, who improved the time of the Belgian rider by more than a minute and completed the 13.4 kilometres with an average speed of 48.925 km/h.
Küng stumbles at 4’’
The newcomer to Jumbo-Visma does not tremble at the arrival of the young talent of Ineos Genadiers Ethan Hayter, who loses 8'' with an average speed of 48.5km/h. The gap to the American Brandon McNulty, trailing by 30’’ on the line, also shows the magnitude of the performance of Rohan Dennis, comfortably installed in the hot seat until Stefan Küng sets off. The time of the European champion at km 7 sends a clear signal: with a tiny delay of eight tenths of a second, he looks able to dislodge the one who had deprived him for a fraction of a second of a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Upon his arrival, Küng suffers a new frustration with 4 seconds behind. Dennis can breathe… but not that long.
Simon Yates starts strong
Among the main contenders likely to worry Dennis, Stefan Bisseger quickly loses ground, but the threat is becoming clearer on the side of Simon Yates, who improves the Australian's intermediate time by more than three seconds. However, the winner of the Paris-Nice 2019 time-trial fades at the finish (+5’’).

Van Aert’s show of force
The battle for the top of the general classification then merges with the fight for the stage, Rohan Dennis' three teammates also being the only ones who can defeat him. Among them, Primoz Roglic rides slightly behind on the first part but he eventually powers to the best time, 4’’ ahead of his Australian teammate. The Olympic time trial champion only savours his position as stage leader for a few seconds, since Wout Van Aert tumbles through Montluçon, with an average speed of 49.225 km/h to take both his first stage on Paris-Nice and the leader's jersey. Christophe Laporte indeed sets the 11th time, but keeps his place on the provisional podium of the Race to the Sun.

Here's the race organizer's stage three summary:
A demanding day of racing leading to an uphill sprint - stage 3’s characteristics perfectly suited Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), who sprinted to his second victory of the season and his first in Paris-Nice. The former World Champion dominated Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) in Dun-le-Palestel. Stage 4 will bring a different challenge to the riders, with a 13.9km individual time-trial from Domérat to Montluçon, ahead of the mountainous final days that will crown the winner of the 80th edition of Paris-Nice.
A mild weather welcomes the 148 riders taking on stage 3 of Paris-Nice 2022 from Vierzon (1 non-starter: Israel-Premier Tech’s Guillaume Boivin). Three breakaway artists quickly get on the move: Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Owain Doull (EF Education-EasyPost) and Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) break away from the bunch at km 3.
The attackers gain 5'
Jasper Philipsen’s Alpecin-Fenix quickly send Senne Leysen at the front of the bunch to control the gap on the flat first half of the stage. Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo collaborate as Julien Bernard starts pulling when the gap hits its maximum: 5’10’’ at km 64. Biniam Girmay’s Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux also put a put rider at the front of the peloton as the attackers enter the last 80km with a lead of 4 minutes.
De Gendt makes sure he goes first atop the first two categorised ascents of the day to defend the polka dot jersey conquered on day 1 by his Lotto Soudal teammate Matthew Holmes. Meanwhile, tension increases in the peloton as many teams try to position their leaders towards the front on a rolling terrain.
Tension on the ascents
The gap is down to 1’45’’ when the bunch cross the line for the first time (43.9km to go). Riders from Ineos Grenadiers, Bahrain Victorious and Team DSM - with a short-lived attack by Soren Kragh Andersen - maintain a hard pace on the way to the last categorised climb of the day, Côte de Le Peyroux (2.8km, 5.2%), to be summited with 22.6km to go.
After a flurry of attacks, Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) is the only attacker slightly detached from the bunch over the top. Sprinters such as Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team), Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Niccolò Bonifazio (TotalEnergies) are already dropped.
Stuyven sets Pedersen for victory
Burgaudeau is caught on the following downhill. The Yellow Jersey Christophe Laporte takes the reins for Jumbo-Visma with 17km to go. Mike Teunissen (Jumbo-Visma) returns to drive the bunch into the last 10km alongside riders from Oliver Naesen’s AG2R Citroën and Ivan Garcia Cortina’s Movistar.
Kragh attacks again with 8km to go, but Garcia Cortina’s teammates reel him in 5.5km away from the line. AG2R Citroën drives the bunch into the last kilometre but Jasper Stuyven launches his Trek-Segafredo companion Mads Pedersen to victory, ahead of Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma). Christophe Laporte goes down with Kevin Geniets in the sprint, but they both get back on their bikes and the Frenchman retains the Yellow Jersey on the eve of the TT.

Weather at the finish city of Orléans at 1:50 PM, local time: 7C (45F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 19 km/hr (12 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) has bronchitis and did not start. He finished 136 yesterday. Neither did Rudy Barbier (Israel-Premier Tech) also did not start. That left a 151-man peloton. The stage officially started at 12:23 PM.
Because of the strong crosswinds, there were several crashes in the first couple of hours. Nils Eekhoff (Team DSM) was one victim of a fall and had to abandon. With 80 kilometers to go there are three riders 3min 50sec ahead of the peloton: Philippe Gilbert (Lotto Soudal), Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal) & Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels).
With 60 kilometers to go the trio was caught.

Here's the race organizer's stage 2 summary:
Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) took victory in Orléans, after an eventful stage 2 of Paris-Nice 2022. The first attacks of the day led to an intense battle through the wind as Jumbo-Visma tried to hurt their rivals again, on the day after their collective show of strength in Mantes-la-Ville. Monday’s fights finished with many victims: the two-time winner of Paris-Nice Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) all lost 1’29’’ on the line, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) dropped 9 minutes. But this time, Jakobsen sprinted to the win ahead of two riders from the Dutch squad, Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte, who retained the yellow jersey. Stage 3 will take the riders through more tricky challenges with a hilly course towards Dun-Le-Palestel on the eve of the time-trial.
The peloton leave Auffargis with 151 riders and two non-starters: Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) and Rudy Barbier (Israel-Premier Tech), who both struggled on stage 1. With the polka dot jersey on his shoulders, Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal) is eager to bring battle on the early climbs of the day. The British baroudeur is the first attacker of the day. He’s quickly followed by Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM), a threatening rival for the KOM standings, and another rider from Lotto Soudal, Philippe Gilbert.
Holmes leads the way to the top of the cat-3 ascents of the Côte des 17 tournants (km 9.6) and Côte de Choisel (km 18) to tighten his grip on the polka dots. Meanwhile, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) is caught up in an early crash. The Belgian champion changes his bike and returns to the bunch after some 10km of chase behind a peloton led by Trek-Segafredo, already trying to turn the race upside down on exposed roads.
Calm returns in the bunch and the attackers bring their lead up to 6’ as they travel through the plains of Beauce. The maximum gap is reached at km 65 (6’10’’). Then, the race explodes as the riders face new open roads exposed to crosswinds from the East.
Tension and the pace seriously increase. The peloton splits in three parts with some 85km to go while riders hit the deck. Nils Eekhoff (Team DSM) is forced to abandon. David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) are caught behind.
Following their show of strength form day 1, Jumbo-Visma are among the most involved to split the bunch. Ineos Grenadiers and Trek-Segafredo also appear willing to hurt their rivals. Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic) and Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) also take turns. The battle goes on for more than 30km, with more riders dropped due to crashes (Girmay, McNulty, Almeida…) or mechanicals (G. Martin, riding alongside the defending champion Schachmann).
The early attackers are caught with 63km to go by a very reduced bunch, and more splits occur. Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco), Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) are among the riders dropped at that moment. They return to a 30-man front group 43km away from the finish line.
The pace drops a bit, allowing the chasers to get closer ahead of the final 20km. The second bunch, mostly led by Movistar for Garcia Cortina and Jorgenson, trail by 25’’, while the gap to Schachmann and Martin drops down to 1’10’’ after it went over two minutes during the stage.
Stefan Bissegger (EF Education EasyPost) launches a new attack with 14km to go, but the yellow jersey Christophe Laporte reacts and everyone follows. The Saiss powerhouse goes again with 5km to go. He manages to open a gap of 5’’ but Fabio Jakobsen still had three teammates to reel in Bissegger with 1km to go.
Christophe Laporte remains the GC leader. Jumbo-Visma photo
Laporte surged to the front with Van Aert right on his wheel inside the final kilometre. But Jakobsen’s speed granted him victory in front of the two Jumbo-Visma riders. Laporte still retains the yellow jersey and Roglic has won more time on rivals such as Martin, Schachmann, McNulty, Almeida, Gaudu...

Weather at the start/finish city of Mantes-la-Ville at 2:00 PM, local time: 8C (47F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 26 km/hr (16 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: 154 riders started the first stage of the 2022 Paris-Nice at 1:02 PM.
Here's the organizer's stage 1 summary:
Stage 1 of Paris-Nice already offered opportunities, and Jumbo-Visma wasted no time to bring battle and deal a blow to their opponents in the 80th edition of Paris-Nice. After some tussles through the wind, the Dutch squad made the most of the tricky hilly final circuit. Not only did they shred the bunch, Primoz Roglic, Wout Van Aert and Christophe Laporte dropped all their rivals with 6km to go. The trio worked well to gain an advantage of 20’’ before the Slovenian and Belgian stars gifted the Frenchman his first victory in a World Tour race, at 29 years old, and his first success with Jumbo-Visma early in the season. The Sun and fresh temperatures accompany the 154-man peloton starting from Mantes-la-Ville in the early afternoon. The course is rolling form the beginning, setting the tone for a demanding stage. Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal) is the first attacker to get away, at km 3, and he’s joined by Aimé De Gendt (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) at km 4.
The peloton about 20km into the stage. Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal) and Aimé De Gendt (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert-Matériaux) are about 3 minutes up the road. The escaping pair were caught with 73km to go. Photo: ASO/Alex Broadway
The gap reaches its maximum, 3’10’’, on the way to the first ascent of the day, Côte de Vétheuil (km 32.9km). Holmes takes the 3 KOM points atop the cat-3 ascent while Fabio Jakobsen’s Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team and Jasper Philipsen’s Alpecin-Fenix take the reins of the bunch.
Ineos Grenadiers join them around km 50. The gap decreases to 1’55’’ before it rises again to 2’55’’ on the slopes of the second ascent of the day, Côte de la route des Crêtes (km 59.5), also dominated by Holmes.
Tension keeps rising in the bunch with open roads exposed to cross and headwinds. Teams are so wary of potential echelons the early attackers are caught with 73km to go due to the high pace in the bunch.
After a brief tussle in the wind, the few dropped riders return to the bunch and a new situation arises with 47km to go as Frederik Frison (Lotto Soudal) launches a new attack. At the same time, riders from the bunch hit the deck and Felix Grossschartner (Bora-Hansgrohe) is forced to abandon.
Yevgeniy Fedorov (Astana-Qazaqstan) and Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) join Frison at the front 44km away from the finish. The gap is up to 1’05’’ as Fedorov dominates the first intermediate sprint of the day, with 30.1km to go.
Their lead goes as high as 1’20’’ but the peloton accelerate again ahead of the final circuit. The gap is down to 30’’ when Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) leads the bunch across the line for the first time. They have 17.7km to go.
The attackers are eventually reeled in with 11km to go. The pace remains high on the way to the final ascent of the day and Jumbo-Visma put the hammer down as soon as they hit the first slopes. Nathan Van Hooydonck takes a hard turn at the front, then it’s Christophe Laporte… And only Zdenek Stybar (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) can follow alongside Primoz Roglic and Wout Van Aert!
Stybar is dropped with 6km to go, and only the black and white trio remain at the front. They work well together to open a gap of 20’’, then Van Aert and Roglic tell Laporte this victory is his. Pierre Latour attacks from the bunch and crosses the line 19’’ behind the winners and 3’’ ahead of the bunch.
