Weather at the city of Navaleno, on the route, 35 kms from the finish, at 1:25 PM, local time: 29C (84F), fair, with the wind from the west at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here the report from stage and final GC winner Primoz Roglic's Team Jumbo-Visma.

Primoz Roglic has won the Vuelta a Burgos. The 33-year-old Slovenian of Team Jumbo-Visma held off direct rivals Adam Yates and Aleksandr Vlasov in a sprint in the final stage. It is Roglic's fourth overall victory in a stage race this season.

The fifth and final stage of the Vuelta a Burgos took the peloton from Golmayo to Lagunas de Neila. Four breakaway groups were able to get away from the peloton, but Team Jumbo-Visma always kept the lead group within reach. Only on the final climb to Lagunas de Neila, the race broke up. The seven-kilometre climb, with an average gradient of 8.5, is the traditional final of the Vuelta a Burgos.

The leaders took the initiative at the foot of the final climb. Roglic and Vlasov responded immediately to an attack from Yates. The top three in the general classification left the rest of the peloton behind. They rode together to the line, where Roglic made a final acceleration. The Slovenian sprinted to take another stage win and the overall title. "Although it was another hot day, I felt good”, Roglic said. "We were always in control of the stage. Ultimately, it was up to me to put in another ultimate effort. I'm happy to have finished it off like this.”

"It was a pleasure to race here. It was the first time I had raced this stage race. The crowd was fantastic. It was also good to get some race miles in my legs one week before the Vuelta a España. I came here to improve, and I think I did that.”

Sports director Marc Reef: "This was a good dress rehearsal. The main goal of this week was to take the final steps towards the Tour of Spain, and we did that. The temperatures, the course and the racing style are similar to what we will see later. The riders who are going to race the Vuelta have also shown that they are ready. Jan (Tratnik) had a long rehabilitation, but he showed a very high level here. We won the team time trial, two stages and the general classification. We can only be happy with that.”

Team Jumbo-Visma has now won fifty races following Roglic's double on the last day. This season, Roglic himself already has 12 victories to his name.

Weather at the finish city of Pradoluengo at 1:50 PM, local time: 29C (84F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 18 km/hr (11 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from GC leader Primoz Roglic's Team Jumbo-Visma.

Primoz Roglic has maintained his lead in the Vuelta a Burgos. The Slovenian of Jumbo-Visma had no problems in the fourth stage and defended his 33-second lead over Aleksandr Vlasov with one stage to go.

On the penultimate stage of the Spanish stage race, the attackers saw their chance to take the stage win. Team Jumbo-Visma led the chase in the peloton and made sure the nine-man break did not get too much space.

"There were three guys in the breakaway who were quite high up in the general classification, so we had to control the gap to about four minutes. That's what we did”, sports director Addy Engels said.

Oier Lazkano was the fastest rider in the breakaway and was one minute ahead of the peloton, which included Roglic. The Slovenian retained the lead in the general classification. "Once again, I saw a strong team. The guys had everything under control", he said. "Tomorrow, we have a tough stage with an uphill finish. I will do everything I can to keep my lead."

According to Engels, tomorrow's final climb is a tough one. "The final climb to Lagunas de Neila is a familiar one as it's part of the course every year. It's a tough but fair climb where strong legs are required. At the moment, it looks good for Primoz."

Weather at the finish city of Villarcayo at 1:45 PM, local time: 29C (85F), sunny, with the wind from the south at 3 km/hr (2 mph). There is a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Aleksandr Vlasov's Team Bora-hansgrohe.

The first section of this year's 183km queen stage from Sargentes de la Lora to Villarcayo featured several climbs, but the highlight of the day awaited with the climb up the Picón Blanco, at 8km in length with its 9 per cent gradient. Lennard Kämna and Matteo Fabbro managed to make it into the leading group, but were dropped again before the summit of the last climb.

In the battle of the favourites that then ensued, Aleksandr Vlasov showed his strong climbing abilities and good form and ultimately went on to take second place. The BORA - hansgrohe rider thus moved up to second place in the general classification.

"The race really exploded on the climb. I did my best but it was quite hot and it wasn't easy. I was dropped a bit, but after I found my rhythm I was able to close the gap in the descent. In the final sprint I tried to follow Roglič because he is very explosive, but in the end he was just too fast. I think that today, second place was the best result that I could achieve, so I am very happy with the result. With two days to go now, I'm now second overall, so I'm in a pretty good position." - Aleksandr Vlasov

Wednesday, August 16: Stage 2, Poza de la Sal 13.1 kilometer team time trial.

Stage 2 map & profile

Jumbo-Visma on its way to winning the time trial.

Les Woodland's book Tour de France: The Inside Story - Making the World's Greatest Bicycle Race is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Poza de la Sal at 1:50 PM, local time: 23C (73F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from winner Team Jumbo-Visma:

Team Jumbo-Visma won the team time trial at the Vuelta a Burgos. The yellow and black squad completed the thirteen-kilometre course in fourteen minutes and 38 seconds, well ahead of Movistar and BORA-hansgrohe. Attila Valter took over the leader's jersey from Juan Sebastián Molano.

The seven-man squad managed the tricky team time trial well. Robert Gesink, Gijs Leemreize and Edoardo Affini made the first breakaways on the flat and kept the pace high. After that, a steep climb had to be conquered in the final kilometres. With an average speed of 53 kilometres per hour, Valter, Primož Roglič, Jan Tratnik, and Koen Bouwman finished the team time trial in Poza de la Sal. Their advantage over Movistar eventually reached nineteen seconds.

"I think our team time trial was almost perfect”, Valter said. "It's a discipline we rarely do, so it was another challenge. We had a good plan, although maybe we could have started more quietly. It takes a lot from everyone in the team to follow a rider like Edoardo. It was nice to do a team time trial before the Vuelta a España. We can also take some improvement points from it. I'm thrilled with this victory.”

New GC leader Attila Valter

Valter will enjoy the leader's jersey tomorrow. "It will be challenging to keep this position, also because we have a strong leader in Primož. My role is to support him as much as possible. But I am very proud to wear this jersey. Hopefully, I can finish high in the general classification as well.”

"It was a pretty fast team time trial with a tricky climb at the end”, sports director Marc Reef said. "That made it complicated, especially as the efforts of the early stages started to weigh on the climb. After four kilometres, we lost Gijs and Robert after their lead, and Edoardo did the execution work up to the climb. Koen then continued strongly on the final stage. Everyone did an excellent job. It was a great day for the team.”

The victory in the team time trial brings Team Jumbo-Visma's season tally to 47 victories.

Tuesday, August 15: Stage 1, Villaba de Duero - Burgos, 161 km

Stage 1 map & profile

Juan Sebastian Molano takes the first stage.

Marcus Aurelius: Meditations Marcus Aurelius' Meditations is available in both Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Burgos at 1:16 PM, local time: 25C (76F), fair, with the wind from the northeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from winner Juan Sebastian Molano's UAE Team Emirates.

It was a winning return to competition for Sebastian Molano and UAE Team Emirates at the Vuelta a Burgos as they took win number 46 of the season in fast finish in the Spanish city of Burgos.

The undulating day which took the riders from Villalba del Duero to Burgos (161km) ended in a mass sprint after great teamwork from the Emirati cohort brought back late attacks to tee-up Molano to unleash his burst of speed. The train of Ivo Oliveira and Ryan Gibbons placed Molano well to take a comfortable win after several months on the sideline after a truing crash in Belgium earlier in the season.

The win marks the 22nd career triumph for the Colombian and his third of the season.

Molano also moves into the lead of the general classification, the first leaders jersey for Molano since the Tour of Sicily in 2021.

Molano: “I’m quite emotional after this win. I had a few very difficult months after my crash earlier in the year and I have to thank my family, girlfriend and the team for their support on my road back to competition. To do it in this way with a victory after such a good performance from my teammates to set it up is amazing and I’m so happy.”
