Weather at the finish city of Treviño at 1:55 PM, local time: 28C (83F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Santiago Umba (Astana Qazaqstan) did not start.

About 90 kilometers into the stage Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) abandoned.

Here's the report from GC winner Sepp Kuss' Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Sepp Kuss has won the 46th edition of the Vuelta a Burgos. The American did not get into trouble in the final stage. With the overall win in the Spanish stage race, Kuss follows former teammate Primoz Roglic, who won the stage race last year.

In the final stage, three riders quickly chose the breakaway. The attackers managed to build a three-minute lead on the hilly terrain and held on for a long time but were caught by the chasing peloton 500 meters before the finish. Pavel Bittner won the bunch sprint.

The final stage gets started.

"This win means a lot to me," Kuss said afterward. "I've had quite some setbacks this past year. Last Wednesday was already a very nice day for me with the stage win. Winning the overall classification of a multi-day stage race makes me very happy.”

"I didn't expect to be able to do this already," the American continued. "It was nice that I could race here with a lot of the guys selected for La Vuelta. That it went so well right away, no one in the team had seen it coming. The victory in the general classification gives me a lot of confidence, and I'm looking forward to the upcoming races.”

With a stage win, final victory in the general classification, and winning the team classification, sports director Marc Reef is also very satisfied with last week. "The main goal was to get rhythm towards La Vuelta. The fact that we also won one stage and took the overall classification is fantastic. For Sepp, it was a tough period. It's nice to see that, despite two crashes, he was able to show himself so much last week. This gives a lot of confidence.”

Tomorrow, with the Klasikoa Donostia San Sebastian, a new Spanish race is directly on Kuss' schedule.

Weather at the finish city of Pampliega at 1:50 PM, local time: 29C (86F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Damien Howson (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) was the first rider off at 2:04 PM.

Here's the report from stage winner Jay Vine's UAE Team Emirates:

Jay Vine has made a memorable return to competition with victory on stage 4 of the Vuelta Burgos in Spain.

The Australian former TT champion blitzed the 18.5km course in a scorching time of 19.51, clocking an average speed of 55.9 km/hr in the time trial from Santa María del Campo to Pampliega.

Damien Howson was the first rider off.

The win marks his first victory since suffering multiple vertebrae fractures at the Itzulia Basque Country crash in April.

Vine: “I feel pretty incredible. I’m really happy with how the legs are going especially in my first race back after injury. It’s been a long way back since the crash. My wife has been so supportive and patient during the whole time and the team has been in constant contact to try and get me ready and back to health. Just 4 months ago I was in ICU not so far from here and to be back here on the top step of a podium is incredible. In a few days my wife is due to give birth to our first born so it’s just a really special time in my life right now.”

Stage winner Jay Vine

Finn Fisher Black now sits in 3rd place overall at +34” behind overall leader Sepp Kuss (Visma LAB) heading into the final stage tomorrow from Frías to Condado de Treviño (156km).

The race: Marius Mayrhofer (Tudor Pro Cycling) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Sepp Kuss' Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Kuss proves he is ready for Vuelta a España with queen stage win in Vuelta a Burgos

Sepp Kuss has won the third stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. The 29-year-old American of Team Visma | Lease a Bike proved the strongest on the final climb and finished off the team work. Thanks to the victory, Kuss will start tomorrow in the leader's jersey.

The peloton had to get ready for a tough stage towards Lagunas de Neila, an 11-kilometre long climb of the hors catégorie. Four riders went clear early in the race, but their adventure came to an end on the penultimate climb, thanks in part to the work of Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

On the final climb, Robert Gesink and Johannes Staune-Mittet dropped their leaders at the foot of the climb. Cian Uijtdebroeks was the first GC-rider who gave it a shot. The young Belgian did not mange to create a gap, but moments later he saw that Kuss was successful. The American rode away from his rivals and reached the finish line after a short solo.

"I'm very happy with this," Kuss responded afterwards. "It was a tough day, partly because of the heat. On the final climb I was struggling quite a bit, but I wanted to try at least once. When I saw I had created a gap, I went as hard as I could. I'm glad it worked out and I want to thank my teammates for all the work they did."

For Kuss, the Vuelta a Burgos is his first race since his covid infection, which he suffered at the Criterium du Dauphiné in June. Because of that illness, he eventually had to skip the Tour de France. Kuss will use the five-day stage race to get ready for the Vuelta a España, where he will defend his title."I struggled for quite a long time with the after-effects of covid. Fortunately, I am now back on level and the confidence is back. I'm ready to defend my title in the Vuelta."
Sports director Marc Reef praised Kuss' fighting spirit. "That Sepp put in such a performance straight away in his first race gives a lot of confidence. After his crash yesterday, we had to wait and see how he would feel today. During the race, the riders were very motivated to make the best of it. Robert and Johannes did a good job for Cian and Sepp on the last two climbs and after Cian's attack, Sepp finished it off fantastically."

According to Reef, Kuss' victory achieved the first of the three goals set. "Beforehand we had said we wanted to prepare for the Vuelta, ride a good GC and fight for a stage win. The latter has been achieved and with the other two we are well on our way. I expect a very interesting battle tomorrow in the time trial."

Weather at the city of Hornillalastra, on the route, 15 km from the finish, at 1:55 PM, local time: 26C (79F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Esteban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost) & Alois Charrin (Tudor Pro Cycling) did not start. That shoud leave 137 riders to start stage two.

Here's the report from second-place Roger Adria's Team Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe:

Today’s second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos featured several punchy climbs, with a finishing ascent of 1.2km with an average gradient of just under six per cent. In the finishing straight, Roger Adria made his move on the right-hand side of the road at 200m remaining. His impressive turn of speed in the finale was enough to secure him second place at Ojo Guareña, behind stage winner Caleb Ewan. The Spanish rider now moves up to fourth in the general classification.

GC leader Pavel Bittner and Team dsm-firmenich PostNL teammates before the stage start.

Roger Adria:
I had actually marked today’s stage, as I knew that I could do well on a parcours like this. On the finishing straight, I waited to find the moment to launch my sprint and saw an opportunity at 200m to go. From there, I just did the best I could and it was enough for second place. It’s a solid result, but also slightly disappointing. I came close to being able to fight for the win, but just narrowly missed out.

Patxi Vila, Sports Director:
We knew today’s stage would present a good opportunity for Roger Adria. The race was unfortunately marred by a crash, in which Patrick Gamper, Ben Zwiehoff and Roger were involved. So we were at a disadvantage heading into the finale, as we had to ride less aggressively than we would have liked. However, Giovanni and Sergio stepped up to do a good job there. We took on the climb in a good position, and Roger was able to take second. In the end, Caleb was ultimately faster. We were really aiming for the win today, so we’re a little disappointed, but all in all it’s still a good result and we can be pleased with the guys’ performance.

Weather at the finish city of Burgos at 1:55 PM, local time: 33C (92F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Pavel Bittner's Team dsm-firmenich PostNL.

The opening day of racing at Vuelta a Burgos saw Team dsm-firmenich PostNL take control throughout the stage, setting things up brilliantly before Pavel Bittner powered to a superb sprint stage win.

Beginning the day with the goal of keeping GC finisher Max Poole safe and going for a stage result with fast finisher Bittner, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL rode cohesively as a unit throughout the afternoon. Vigilant for any crosswinds that never materialised, the team was ever present at the front of the peloton, keeping each other out of trouble as the stage progressed. With the early breakaway caught, Poole smartly snagged three bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint before all attention turned to the finale with Bittner.

Time to race.

The great positioning work continued and the team was always in the first 15 riders through the many roundabouts, dropping Bittner off towards the front over the last kicker. From there, Bittner used his racing instincts and bided his time, before launching a devastating kick to take his first professional win and the Men’s program’s 14th of the year.

An elated Bittner said: “Today was the first sprint opportunity of the race. The guys and team really believed in me that we could do a nice final and potentially win. Coming into the final 40 kilometres the boys did a really good job, already being in the front early and holding a side of the road so we could be safe and out of trouble. We could hold the left side of the road almost until the final. Then the team placed me really well going over the top of the last drag and onto the descent to the finish. From there I went on intuition a little bit and finally managed to win which feels amazing after so many second places. I’m really happy, and also to pay back the guys for their work and it’s a really good start to the race for us.”

Pavel Bittner wins stage one.

Team dsm-firmenich PostNL coach Callum Ferguson added: “Coming into this race we wanted to be super sharp on the details because we knew the impact it has on the result. Our aim was to sprint with Pavel and keep Max safe throughout the stage. We also had an eye on those bonus seconds and go for them if we could without wasting too much energy, which Max and the guys did well. Then the focus was on being together and feeling that moment to go in the final. The guys really nailed it today, you could see we were together and safe from far out, then in the final they positioned Pavel who just went for it. Pavel is over the moon with it and I think we can be too.”
