Weather at the race city of Lagoa at 12:30 PM, local time: 17C (63F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is currently a 90% chance of rain with the first rider (Daniel Viegas, Team Aviludo) having started. By 3:00 the chances for rain drop to 1%.

The race: Here's the report from GC winner Daniel Martinez's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Dani Martinez led home an INEOS Grenadiers 1-2 overall at the Volta ao Algarve after a superb and consistent week of racing.

The Colombian set the fourth fastest time in the decisive final time trial to finish the race two seconds ahead of team-mate Filippo Ganna.

Ganna continues to impress in stage races and his climbing performances in Portugal set him up for a brilliant GC finish. The Italian national TT champion finished third across the 24.4km course, 10 seconds back on stage winner Stefan Kung (Groupama-FDJ).

Tom Pidcock was the last rider down the ramp, taking a slender GC lead into the finale thanks to his victory on Saturday's queen stage. The Brit pushed hard, staying upright despite a brief off-road moment, and would eventually finish in seventh place on the GC.

There were some great performances in the TT with Thymen Arensman setting the sixth best time. Jonathan Castroviejo (12th) and Laurens De Plus (14th) also flirted with the top 10.

Just like their teammates in Spain, the riders in the Algarve also wrapped up victory in the team classification.

2023 Algarve winner Daniel Martinez

After the win Martinez said: "A lot of people thought this morning that Filippo was the favourite for the GC. Day by day my feeling has been better, but today is also a surprise for me."

Weather at Loulé, on the route, 124 km from the finish at 12:45 PM, local time: 17C (63F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 24 km/hr (15 mph). Currently there is no rain, but the chances go up to 63% by 2:00 PM.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage four summary:

Day to climb Alto do Malhão (twice), but with the final time trial in mind. In the fourth stage of the 49th Volta ao Algarve, two tactics were played between those who will bet heavily this Sunday in Lagoa and those who sought to gain precious seconds to better defend themselves on the last day of the race.

Malhão once again did not disappoint. There was a warm up on the first pass, and a decisive acceleration on the second. Thomas Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers), Ilan van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step) and Kevin Vermaerke (DSM) took the lead and that’s when João Almeida appeared. The portuguese from UAE Team Emirates managed to join, tried to gain advantage, but Pidcock didn’t give a chance.

The British rider was fully concentrated on the wheel of Almeida and chose the perfect time do attack for win in Malhão, 150 meters from the finish line. Almeida was second (by one second), followed by Ilan van Wilder (by five). The winner at Malhão in 2022, Sergio Higuita (BORA-hansgrohe), was fourth. Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education-EasyPost) couldn’t keep up the pace this time around and handed the Yellow Jersey Turismo do Algarve to Pidcock.

“It’s really nice to finally win. I think as a team we didn’t do very well on two occasions where we could have won. Yesterday [Friday] Filippo [Ganna] was strong and could have won. On the second day, after the brilliant job we did in the last kilometre, we complicated on the approach to the finish line and ended up being surprised. Today [Saturday] was one of the decisive days and we had to make sure we got things right”, explain Pidckock.

The INEOS Grenadiers rider admitted that he didn’t know that the finish line was a little higher than the first time he passed through Malhão. “I attacked, thinking that the finish line was at the top of the climb, like the first pass, and I didn’t expect to turn left, about 70 meters to go. I even thought I could be overtaken. The important thing is to give everything until the end”, he stressed.

“Tomorrow is a time trial. There is no plan other than to go full gas from beginning to end,” he added.

In the GC, Pidcock has five seconds over Ilan van Wilder and seven over João Almeida. However, there are two cyclists who will be the center of attention.

Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) and Tobias Foss (Jumbo-Visma) are 31 and 32 seconds behind, respectively. We are talking about a two-time time trial world champion and the current world champion. This Sunday in Lagoa, they will have 24.4 kilometers to try and get the first place of the Volta ao Algarve.

The points and mountain classifications were decided. Magnus Cort Nielsen, winner in Fóia and Tavira, won the Green Jersey Crédito Agrícola, while the Blue Cyclin’Portugal belongs to Kasper Asgreen (Soudal Quick-Step), who was in the breakaway of the day.

The White Jersey IPDJ belongs now to Oscar Onley (DSM), leader of the youth classification.

The fourth stage had 177.9 kilometres, starting in Albufeira and being the day to climb Alto do Malhão, with two passages on the 2.6 kilometer climb, with an average slope of 9.2%.

Soudal Quick-Step, Trek-Segafredo and Groupama-FDJ played their cards right off the start, putting Kasper Asgreen, Mathias Vacek and Lewis Askey, respectively, in the lead. The trio got away, thinking about helping their leaders and not so much about winning the stage. The difference was at one point close to five minutes, but the three cyclists were caught just under 40 kilometers to go.

This presence at the front of the race made the pace very high, above 40 kilometers/hour. Kasper Asgreen was first in the third categories of Picota (47.1 kilometres), Vermelhos (111.1) and Alte (140.4). He took the lead in the mountain classification, thus “taking” the Cyclin’Portugal Blue Jersey from the portuguese António Ferreira (Kelly-Simoldes-UDO).

The Danish rider wasn’t even in the group when the first ascent of Malhão began, but what he did before earned him the public’s election as the most combative of the day. He was also the first in the intermediate sprint in São Brás de Alportel.

But what everyone wanted to see was how the double passage in Malhão would be faced. In the first, Rémi Cavagna (Soudal Quick-Step) and Kobe Goossens (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) stood out. The difference to the group that included, at that time, still included the yellow jersey Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education-EasyPost), was close to 40 seconds.

However, they would not resist, as teams such as UAE Team Emirates and INEOS Grenadiers worked to ensure that João Almeida and Thomas Pidcock would fight for the stage and the GC.

After four intense stages and with the general classification to be decided, the Lagoa time trial promises strong emotions.

Weather at the finish city of Tavira at 12:30 PM, local time: 17C (62F), fair, with the wind from the east at 21 km/hr (13 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner & GC leader Magnus Cort's Team EF Education-EasyPost.

Magnus Cort astonished the peloton with a staggering sprint to win stage three of the Volta ao Algarve and increase his overall lead in the Portuguese stage race.

With 450 meters to go, it looked like it was all over for the man in the yellow jersey. After winning yesterday’s race to top of the Alto da Fóia, Magnus had gone for the bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint today and found himself in front with a powerful group. They made the split-second decision to drive it to the line, riding a team-time-trial ahead of the charging peloton.

"I was not expecting that at all,” Magnus said afterwards. “The idea was just to get through the stage as easily as possible and not even try to sprint. Quickstep was keeping the break very, very close, and we came with the idea to go for the bonus sprint and see if I could get some bonus seconds for the classification, so we went there and they brought the breakaway back for the bonus sprint. It was a hard sprint on cobbles and suddenly we were a small group with a gap. I didn’t really think about it but especially the Ineos guys and Foss, they came straight away and said, “Hup, hup! Let’s go!” I was keen straight away to go on the attack there with those guys. It was a great group to ride the last 25 kilometers. It was the perfect team-time-trial teamwork.”

Heads down, on the long straight run to Tavira, Magnus’s group drag raced the sprinters’ teams, who were mounting a frantic chase behind them. Inside the final kilometer, the peloton caught up. Magnus looked back, tightened his shoes, and then surged to the front of the race to round the final right-hand turn at speed. He saw the finish line at the top of the hill—almost half a kilometer straight in front of him—and went for it.

The sprinters could only gasp as Magnus left them in his dust.

Magnus now leads the Volta ao Algarve by 18 seconds and also leads the points competition. Tomorrow, he will defend his yellow jersey on the hilly run from Albufeira to the summit of Alto do Malhão. The Volta ao Algarve will finish Sunday with a flat 24-km time trial in Lagoa.

Stage 2 map & profile

Magnus Cort (on left, throwing his bike) actually won the race.

Marcus Aurelius' Meditations is available in both Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the city of Alferce, 112 kilometers into the stage, at 12:30 PM, local time: 17C (62F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner & new GC leader Magnus Cort's Team EF Education-EasyPost.

Magnus Cort won stage two of the Volta ao Algarve today in Portugal.

The Dane fought his way all the way up the day’s final climb to the Alto da Fóia and then launched a powerful sprint through traffic from way back in the group. Magnus thrust his bike forward at the last moment to cross the line first by a tire length and take over the race’s leader’s jersey.

This win is a testament to Magnus’s tenacity and the confidence that his teammates had in him.

“For me, this is really amazing,” Magnus says. “At home, I was thinking about this stage and didn’t really know that I could tell the sports directors that I wanted to go for this climb—it’s an eight-kilometer mountain. But I came to this race, and they had the same idea that I should try today. Trying is one thing. I have won on mountain-top finishes before, but it has always been from the breakaway. I have never done that from the bunch of main GC favorites. It is really fun. The team here has a really big belief in me.”

Magnus knew he had the legs, but thought he had missed his chance until the very end. Boxed in, with riders in front and around him, he had to wait and wait and wait to see space. As soon as he saw an opening, he went. And when Magnus Cort sees an uncrossed finish line…no bike racer can push himself harder.

“I got really nervous in the end,” Magnus says. “I was always feeling on the climb that it was going okay. It was hard but I was still inside, I wouldn’t say my comfort zone, but I knew I had a sprint left. As we got closer, with four kilometers to go, I was thinking okay, if we keep this tempo it is perfect. And then, in the final 500 meters, obviously everyone wanted to be close to the front and there was a headwind. I was maybe a little bit afraid to touch the wind too early, and I really struggled to find my way out, but luckily I got there in the last five meters, and I got the win.”

Tomorrow, Magnus will defend the race leader’s yellow jersey, as the Volta ao Algarve heads from Faro to Tavira for a likely bunch sprint. Stage four will be a hilly run from Albufeira to the uphill finish on the Alto do Malhão. The Volta ao Algarve will finish Sunday with a flat 24-km time trial in Lagoa.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Jordi Meeus' Team Bora-hansgrohe.

With more than 200km but a fairly flat profile the opening stage of the Volta ao Algarve was one for the sprinters today. An early break of 7 riders went clear from the bunch but BORA – hansgrohe and Soudal-Quickstep took immediately control of the race for their sprinters. Frederik Wandahl did a great job in bringing back the remaining escapees already with over 10km to go. The rest of BORA – hansgrohe picked up the pace on the final kicker and in the bunch sprint Jordi Meeus just missed out on the win today being denied by A. Kristoff to the line.

“First of all congrats to the guys. All of them did a great job and they delivered our plan almost to perfection. Frederik pulled a lot to bring back the break, chapeau to him. We wanted to be in front on the last kicker because of positioning before the roundabouts and Jonas and Marco invested a lot there, but they did a great Job. Jordi was close, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough again. But I think we can be really happy with the performance of the team today.” – Torsten Schmidt, Sports Director

“Close, but no win - again. But there are more days to come. The team was amazing today and I am sorry I couldn't finish the job today. We pushed the pace on the last kicker and then it was some wheel surfing for me in the downhill and roundabouts. The sprint was a little chaotic because of the headwind but I was in a perfect position. I had good legs, but I wasn’t able to come around Waernskjold quickly enough because there was no space. I think I lost the sprint there.” – Jordi Meeus
