Weather at Loulé, near the finish, at 12:50 PM, local time: 19C (67F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from GC winner Remco Evenepoel's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Remco Evenepoel sealed the overall victory at the Volta ao Algarve, becoming the first rider in four decades with three wins at the most important Portuguese race of the calendar and confirming his flying start to the season. The Belgian Champion, who triumphed here also at the 2020 and 2022 editions, racked up his 12th victory in a stage race and showed that he is on the right track for his first big rendez-vous of the year, next month’s Paris-Nice.

“I’m very happy with my win! I felt good today, I had a great team around me, strong legs, and I’m delighted I could bring it home. It means a lot to have such a great start to the season, with three victories in the space of a week”, said immediately after the race Remco, who before starting in Algarve soloed to a crushing win at the Figueira Champions Classic.

The final stage of the 50th edition was a lively and nervous one, due to the numerous attacks that came in the first hour, which made the pace really relentless. Evenepoel began the stage with the yellow jersey on his shoulders, following Saturday’s success in the individual time trial, and despite the fact that he and his Soudal Quick-Step teammates were put under pressure by a large 20-man breakaway, they didn’t panic and handled the situation with a lot of calm and confidence.

It's time to ride the 2024 Volta ao Algarve's final stage.

Our squad sent Mattia Cattaneo in the front group to keep an eye on things, while controlling the gap of the escapees. After a period of relative peace, more attacks followed the first time up the steep Malhão, where James Knox took over the reins in the bunch to make sure none of these would become a threat. Having dropped back from the break, Cattaneo too gave a hand on the descent, before Mikel Landa moved into the slot at the bottom of the final climb. The Basque whittled down the peloton to just a handful of riders, and from that small group Remco finished second after a powerful kick in the last 300 meters.

“It was a good week for us and we can be content with how things went. I’m proud of the guys, because they remained calm at all times and showed how strong we are mentally. We never panicked, regardless of the situation, and knew how to handle all things”, added Remco after the team’s seventh success of the season. “To have three overall victories here it’s nice and I hope to come back here one day and try to go for a fourth win.”

World time trial champion Remco Evenepoel on his way to winning the stage and taking over the GC lead. Volta ao Algarve photo

Tour de France: 2020

Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2020: The Tour During Covid-19, Better Late Than Never is available in both Kindle eBook and Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the race city of Albufeira at 12:45 PM, local time: 20C (68F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from winner Remco Evenepoel's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Remco Evenepoel took his first victory as reigning Time Trial World Champion on the fourth day of the Portuguese race. The stage held around Albufeira was 22 kilometers in length and consisted of some short but sharp climbs and technical sections, the latter coming in the second part of the course, but none of these could slow down the Belgian on his quest to claim the win.

The penultimate rider to roll down the start ramp, produced a flying ride as soon as the opening kilometers, going quickest through the first checkpoint. The route was hillier than in the past years, but that didn’t seem to bother Evenepoel, who increased his lead by the time he arrived at the second split, which put him in firm control of the virtual general classification. The 24-year-old maintained the average speed close to 50km/h and concluded the ITT with the fastest time by a large margin.

“I was very motivated for this time trial, the first of the year in my beautiful rainbow jersey. There were a lot of strong guys at the start, but I immediately found my rhythm on the bike and produced a solid ride. The fact that I finished ahead of all of them makes me really proud. It’s nice to already have two victories from five days of racing”, said Remco after his fourth stage success at the Volta ao Algarve.

Saturday’s victory propelled him to the top of the overall standings with just one stage to go, which will finish on the Alto do Malhão, and the new leader of the race – who has a nice cushion over his opponents – believes in his chances of retaining the yellow jersey: “We have a very strong team and we’ll try to defend our position. I think that this result and what we showed two days ago serve as confirmation that we are ready. I love Portugal and it would be great to take this jersey home.”

Weather at the finish city of Tavira at 12:45 PM, local time: 18C (65F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Wout van Aert's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Wout van Aert has taken his first victory of the season at the Volta ao Algarve. The Belgian rider from Visma | Lease a Bike surprised many when he entered the bunch sprint and proved the fastest after an impressive acceleration.

Van Aert's decision to challenge for the stage win on the third stage came as a surprise. The Belgian had previously announced that he wanted to save himself for the weekend and stay out of trouble. However, once the breakaway was caught and the sprint teams prepared for the bunch sprint, Van Aert changed his mind.

"I decided to go for the sprint with ten kilometres to go. The run-up to the sprint was safe, and I was well-positioned with the team after the final intermediate sprint. It was easy to stay in front, and the finish was slightly uphill, which suited me. I felt my legs were good, and I thought: I'd better go for it", Van Aert said.

"It's nice to start the season with a win. The Volta ao Algarve is a prestigious race, and it's not easy to win a sprint here. It gives me a lot of confidence." According to Van Aert, the sprint went his way. "I had to take a little risk. I was quite far back in the last kilometre, but I ended up in the slipstream of the guys who came into the wind too early."

With the win, Van Aert moved up in the general classification. The Belgian is seventh, 22 seconds behind Martinez, and with the time trial still to come, anything is possible. "I haven't touched my time trial bike all winter, so I don't expect much from it. Anyway, it will be tough to beat Remco Evenepoel, but of course, I'll do everything I can to have a good time trial."

Weather at the city of Monchique, on the route, near the finish at 1:05 PM, local time: 16C (60F), rain showers, with the wind from the west at 23 km/hr (13 mph). The rain is expeted to end about 1:30.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage two summary.

Volta ao Algarve was once again synonymous of happiness for Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe). In the second stage of the 50th edition, the Colombian cyclist triumphed over Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) at the top of Foia and took the lead overall.

“I am very happy, we wanted to win the stage here and with me and with Sergio we did quite well in the end. Remco started his sprint, and I was waiting for him. When he left, I knew we had a headwind and that i had to enter the curve first. I went all out on the last curve and knew that it would be difficult for him to pass me. I know there are very good time trialists, like Remco or Van Aert, but I will try as well”, explained Daniel Martinez at the end of the stage.

The 171.9-kilometer stage had an exciting finish at Alto da Fóia, in Monchique, but also a lively start in Lagoa. The first breakaway emerged early on, with an attack by five riders – Max Walker (Astana Qazaqstan Team), Martin Urianstad Bugge (Uno-X Mobility), Pedro Silva (ABTF Betão – Feirense), Aleksandr Grigorev (Efapel Cycling) and César Martingil (Tavfer-Ovos-Matinados-Mortágua) – who were joined shortly after by Rúben Simão (AP Hotels & Resorts-Tavira-SC Farense), Oliver Rees (Sabgal-Anicolor) and Gonçalo Amado (Tavfer-Ovos Matinados-Mortágua).

The fugitives continued to increase their lead, which reached more than five minutes with around 87 kilometers to go. At 70 kilometers from the finish line, and after Gonçalo Amado had left the group and the race, Andreas Leknessund and Jonas Ambrahamsen, both from Uno-X Mobility, broke away from the peloton and reached the front of the race, in an excellent move by the Norwegian team, which added three cyclists and started to impose the pace.

As the kilometers rolled by, it got tougher and tougher and the group got smaller and smaller, until Andreas Leknessund took the opportunity to attack and isolate himself at the front of the race with around 16 kilometers to go. The Uno-X Mobility rider had a lead of more than a minute, but was also caught, 6 kilometers from the finish line and shortly after having won the Meta Volante Crédito Agrícola.

From then on, James Knox (Soudal Quick-Step) set the pace on uphill, in a group of just 12 riders at the start of the last kilometer. Then came a spectacular finish, highlighted by a lot of wind and emotion, in which Daniel Martinez overtook second-placed Remco Evenepoel to win the stage in 4h40m20s. Sepp Kuss (Team Jumbo-Visma) was third, six seconds behind.

Daniel Martinez took over the Turismo do Algarve yellow jersey with a time of 9:32:14, six seconds ahead of Remco Evenpoel and 12 ahead of Sepp Kuss, second and third respectively. The Colombian is now also the owner of the Water is Life mountain jersey. Gerben Thijssen (Intermarché-Wanty) lost his yellow jersey, but kept the Crédito Agrícola Green points jersey, and Portuguese rider António Morgado became the new youth leader, taking over the IPDJ White Jersey. Among the teams, BORA – hansgrohe is the new leader.

Daniel Martinez will start stage three in Yellow. Volta Algarve photo

The 50th Volta ao Algarve continues this Friday with the third stage, a 192.2-kilometer journey between Vila Real de Santo António and Tavira. The start is scheduled for 11:55 and the finish is expected at 16:35.

Weather at the finish city of Lagos at 1PM, local time: 19C (67F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 29 km/hr (18 mph). There is a two percent chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from the race organizer.

Gerben Thijssen (Intermarché-Wanty) won the first stage of the 50th Volta ao Algarve. The Belgian exploded to victory with a powerful sprint in the final meters, overtaking Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) and Jordi Meeus (BORA-hansgrohe), second and third respectively.

“Last year I didn’t manage to start the season well, so it was very important to get off to a good start this year. I’ve already got two wins in the middle of February. That’s incredible! And at this level, it proves that I’ve worked hard over the winter to get in this shape”, said Gerben Thijssen at the end of the stage.

“It was a difficult sprint because of the headwind and also because of the very steep climb two kilometers from the finish. The team did an extraordinary job. I had all six of my teammates fighting for me throughout the stage. Tomorrow we’ll work for our overall man, Rune Herregodts”, he added.

The longest stage of this edition, a total of 200.8 kilometers between Portimão and Lagos, had the first breakaway at kilometer 11, with Tobias Bayer (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Fábio Costa (ABTF Betão-Feirense), Tomás Contte (Aviludo- Louletano-Loulé Concelho), Diogo Narciso (Credibom-LA Alumínios-Marcos Car), Noah Campos (Kelly-Simoldes-UDO), César Fonte (Rádio Popular-Paredes-Boavista) and Gonçalo Amado (Tavfer-Ovos Matinados-Mortágua) escaping from the peloton.

The peloton never allowed the fugitives to reach the four-minute mark, but it was enough for Tomas Contte to secure the first Água é Vida jersey of this Volta ao Algarve. Involved in the escape, the Aviludo-Louletano-Loulé Concelho rider was the fastest in the mountain passes at Aldeia dos Matos (kilometer 37.6, 4th category) and Nave (kilometer 96.5, 3rd category).

This scenario continued until about 50.5 kilometers to the finish line, when Tobias Bayer attacked in the front group and isolated himself at the head of the race. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider, who was voted the most combative of the stage, was the last to resist the peloton’s pursuit, but was eventually caught with 22 kilometers to go.

From that point on, the peloton remained cohesive and avoided any risks until the final kilometers. The moves, in fact, only energized the race in the final three kilometers, with Akea-B&B Hotels leading the peloton. However, only the Intermarché-Wanty men were able to put Gerben Thijssen in a position to explode to victory in this first stage, after 4h52m04s.

When all was said and done, Gerben Thijssen took the lead in the overall standings with 4h51m54s, four seconds less than second-placed Marijn van den Berg and six less than third-placed Jordi Meeus. In addition to the Turismo do Algarve yellow jersey, the Belgian is also the owner of the Crédito Agrícola green jersey in the points.

Gerben Thijssen will start stage two in the GC leader's yellow jersey. Organizer's photo

In the remaining standings, in addition to the aforementioned mountain leader, Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers) won the youth race, taking over the IPDJ White Jersey, and INEOS Grenadiers secured the lead among the teams.

The second stage of Volta ao Algarve takes to the road this Thursday, on a 171.9-kilometer ride from Lagoa to Alto da Fóia, in Monchique. An early selection of candidates for the final triumph is expected, as the stage finish will be a first category mountain prize.
