The race: Here's the report from third-place David Dekker's SEG Racing Academy.

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

After a successful start of the season, with a dominating performance in Ster van Zwolle where we seized our first win of the season, it was time to tackle yet another one-day classic, 1.1’s GP Le Samyn which featured a really strong field with WT and PCT teams. The Belgian race had a total of 20 cobbled sections that awaited the peloton in the final part of the race, but the start was already a fast one and a group of 6 riders, which included our Wessel Krul, went up the road. The breakaway was allow a gap that surpassed the 5-minute mark before the bunch picked up the pace and reduced significantly reduced the distance.

Such a speed increase caused the bunch to break in several group, with David Dekker representing our flag in the front one. With 80 km to go, they initial break was caught and we had both, Krul and Dekker, in the lead. In the chasing groups behind we had riders of the likes of Jordi Meeus, Stan van Tricht and Maikel Zijlaard. With less than 50 km to go all five riders could be seen in the leading group, but once the echelons stroked again, it was Meeus and Dekker again being part of the leading one. The current U23 Dutch National Road Race champion showed his talent and well-doing in these races as he could be found near the front at all times, with Jordi Meeus next to him. Both talented riders where in the first group once it was down just to 25 riders. In two occasions, Dekker followed some tough attacks and broke clear of the group for a while, but both moves where eventually brought back.

With less than 10 km to the line, the leading group was down to just 12 riders, including our David Dekker. Despite the constant accelerations and attacks when the group went through cobbled sections, our 21-year old, was always in the right position, calm and ready to go. In the final kilometer, after 200 km of tireless racing, Dekker produced a strong sprint and crossed the line in third position of the day. Following his win in Ster van Zwolle just three days ago, Dekker showcases that all the work during the winter time was spot and that he is ready to take on the next challenge that comes his way.

Aike Visbeek, Academy Director and DS for the race:
“The goal was to get in the early breakaway and we accomplished that with Wessel (Krul). That put us in a very good situation, as when the break was brought back he could help David (Dekker). The team worked really well to have Meeus and Dekker in good position at all times and both of them showed that they were capable of doing the final. We are happy with the result, as the team did an amazing performance against some of the best squads in the world, we can be proud of this one but we won’t stop working”.
