Milano-Torino podium history | 2019 edition | 2021 edition | Course map & profile | Start list

Milano (Mesero)-Torino (Stupinigi), 198 km

Marc Demare

Arnaud Demare wins the 101st edition of Milano-Torino.

Weather at Torino (Turin in English) near the finish town of Stupinigi at 2:15 PM, local time: 28C (82F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.

Epictetus' Golden Sayings

The route: The route of the 101st edition is basically flat except for the crossing of Monferrato where a series of short climbs will be faced. After departing from Mesero it crosses Magenta before continuing along the Po Valley on wide and straight roads. In addition to the usual city obstacles such as roundabouts, traffic islands and raised sections, there are four level crossings, all concentrated in the first 60km. After crossing the Po near Valenza, the route takes in the undulations of Monferrato, before crossing Asti. The final 70km are practically flat to the finish in Stupinigi.

The race: Here's the report from fourth-place Peter Sagan's Bora-hansgrohe team.

A flat 198km was waiting for the riders for today’s Milano-Torino but, as is so often the case, a flat parcours makes for fast, furious and attacking riding – especially with the flat finale making it a race the sprinters would be fighting to win.

As expected, the attempts to get in the break started almost as soon as the race itself got underway, with six riders swiftly building up a lead of more than seven minutes, something that gave the peloton cause to up the pace just a little to keep the leaders in check. Not wanting to expend too much energy early on in the race, the BORA-hansgrohe riders worked well with the rest of the chasing peloton to gradually reduce the advantage, Gregor Mühlberger taking to the front to keep the pace high, timing it well so that by the time there were 50km to go, the break only had 2:15 over the bunch, and 20km later, this gap had been cut in half.

In the final 20km, Gregor was joined at the front by his BORA-hansgrohe teammates, who pushed hard and put pressure on the last two riders left on the front, and it was clear that the peloton was riding in preparation for a sprint and not a breakaway victory.

Passing the last escapee without pausing for breath, the sprint trains began to form, with the twists and turns of the Stupinigi streets requiring riders stayed alert. Sticking to the front and controlling the pace, while also delivering Peter Sagan into position, the BORA-hansgrohe riders excelled themselves, playing their part perfectly in preparing for the finish. Under the flamme rouge and Peter took to the front, having stayed safe in the fast run up to the finale. Matching the world’s best sprinters for speed, Peter crossed the line in fourth, barely a bike length separating the top five finishers.

From the Finish Line:
"We had a fast Milano-Torino that came down to a bunch sprint, as expected. It was warm but not too hot, so in that aspect it was bearable. The team worked hard to control the peloton and deliver me safely in the front. In the finishing straight, I was in a good position in the front and I launched my sprint early. I was caught on the line, so overall it was a good day. My form and the sensations today were good, and I look forward to Saturday's Milano-Sanremo." – Peter Sagan

"It was a good race from the team, we worked well together. Our goal was to bring Peter in a good position in the last corner before the finish and the squad did a fantastic job. In the end, Peter was the first to start his sprint. He looked very strong and I think it was possible to take more than fourth place today. It was a bit of a long sprint in the front but he showed his strength, so we are happy.” - Enrico Poitschke, Sports Director
