The race:
The 1989 Paris-Roubaix was 265.5 km long and raced at an average speed of 39.164 km/hr.
There were 169 starters and 57 classified finishers.
Earlier rain had left the course muddy and slippery.
The winning break of six escaped with 60 kilometers to go.
Dirk De Wolf left them 43 kilometers later. Jean-Marie Wampers bridged up to De Wolf with 9 kilometers to go and that was the race. Wampers was easily the faster of the two men on the Roubaix track
Jean-Marie Wampers was easily faster than Dirk De Wolf in the finish. Note the extended head tube, sometimes called "Freuler Geometry" after the bikes Swiss rider Urs Freuler rode. This created a smaller, stiffer frame, but still fit the bigger rider who needed a higher handlebar and seat.
