Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

The race: Though 99 riders finished the race, because the finish camera failed, only fourteen riders were classified.

It was a lovely March day. The riders were wearing short-sleeve jerseys and the sun was out.

In the final kilometers it seemed that each of the group of seven riders that had gone clear was intent upon escaping. The attacks came, one after another, and then they would re-group, rest a bit. And then another attack would go.

They came to the final kilometer together.

"Z" rider Johan Lammerts led out the sprint, but he went far too early. Coming up the side and moving to his left, Johan Capiot was easily the fastest of the break. He was able to sit up and give the crowd a two-arm salute.
