Weather at the finish city of Valencia at 1:30 PM, local time: 9C (48F), sunny, with the wind from the southeast at 8 km/hr (6 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Thymen Arensman's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Tao Geoghegan Hart emerged from a dramatic final day of racing in Valencia with third place overall despite a late crash.

The Brit was able to step onto the overall podium after a brilliant five days of racing from both himself and the team. After a flat-out finish Geoghegan Hart had snatched back a bonus second on leader Giulio Ciccone (Trek Segafredo) but was taken out in an accident on the final corner of the stage.

In the end the Grenadier was handed the same time as the bunch, allowing him to take to the podium and back up a superb victory on Saturday. The yellow jersey changed hands in the final metres, with Rui Costa (Intermache-Wanty) slipping clear and narrowly holding off Thymen Arensman in a two-up sprint.

The stage win and bonus seconds were enough to hand the Portuguese rider a 16-second overall victory, with Geoghegan Hart finishing three seconds further back.

The result from Arensman was made all the more impressive after the Dutchman got through a heavy workload on the final day. He was there in an elite group of nine over the final climb and then drove hard to ensure the group would ultimately stay away.

Carlos Rodriguez finished 10th overall as part of the chase group after a very strong showing from the team in Spain.

Plus, Team Intermarché-Circus-Wanty posted these remarks from race winner Rui Costa:

“I found a fresh impetus since my arrival within Intermarché-Circus-Wanty. This team believes in me and that motivates me a lot. Today I wanted to go for a good general classification. This very short stage promised to be intense and it was the case. I was distanced on the last climb, but without panicking I kept them in sight. Then I managed to come back downhill, on my own. The collaboration was not optimal in the front, because several teams had different aims. In the final 10 kilometer I motivated everyone to keep pushing and in the end we managed to resist to the big peloton behind.

“My intention was to attack in the final, to take advantage of a corner and see if I could win the stage. I didn’t know that I also won the general classification. This Volta Valenciana is a very nice race. I’m happy to win it against such a field of competitors. This season start is simply fantastic. After our brilliant collective performance on Mallorca, the party continues. Full of motivation I’m now going to the Figueira Classic and the Volta Algarve, two Portuguese riders.”

Weather at Segorbe, on the route, 15 km from the finish, at 1:20 PM, local time: 21C (69F), sunny, with the wind from the southeast at 5 km/hr (3 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race report from second-place Tom Gloag's Team Jumbo-Visma.

Tom Gloag continued to show his qualities in the fourth stage of the Tour of Valencia. In the queen's stage, the Briton finished second in an uphill sprint. With his first podium finish for Team Jumbo-Visma, Gloag moved up to fifth place in the general classification. With one stage to go, the 21-year-old rider also leads the youth classification.

A group of 23 riders set off immediately after the start. Among them was Tosh Van der Sande. The Belgian rider from Team Jumbo-Visma joined the breakaway, which was kept within three minutes by the peloton.

Van der Sande was one of the last riders to be caught by the peloton. The favourites kept each other in check for a long time as the high tempo meant there were few pinpricks on the final climb. Gloag was kept at the front by teammates Koen Bouwman and Sam Oomen in the closing stages before the Briton sprinted for his chance in the final kilometre.

Tao Geoghegan Hart sprinted to victory with Gloag in his wake. Gloag's six bonification seconds moved him up one place in the general classification. With one stage to go, the Brit is fifth in the overall standings, in the same time as the fourth-placed rider.

"It went well”, Gloag said. "The whole team kept me out of the wind, so I didn't have to waste too much energy until the final. Thanks to Koen and Sam's excellent work, I was in a good position in the last few hundred metres. In retrospect, I probably should have started my sprint a little earlier, but I am happy with second place”, Gloag said.

The youngster is aware that success does not happen overnight. “I have to take advantage of things going well now while working hard to experience it more frequently in the future. It is special to have such great results at this level. My current position at the top of the youth classification is a welcome affirmation of my strong form. I hope we can finish the Tour of Valencia tomorrow well”, he concluded.

Weather at the finish city of Sagunto at 1:30 PM, local time: 16C (61F), sunny, with the wind from the sourtheast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Bob Jungels' Team Bora-hansgrohe.

Day three of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana took the peloton from Bétera to Sagunto. The stage covered 145km, a punchy profile and two categorized climbs. Right after the flag off Bob Jungels went clear from the peloton and was part of a five-riders breakaway that, despite all efforts in the peloton, ultimately wasn’t brought back. In the final sprint Bob Jungels rode to a strong 2nd, while Simone Velasco secured the stage win. Ahead of tomorrow’s queen stage Aleksandr Vlasov remains in 3rd overall.

“At the beginning I thought it would be bit of a suicide mission, since the teams with a sprinter would control the race anyway. From the last climb on I was really on the limit, but somehow we managed to make it to the line. In the final sprint, Gregaard unfortunately lost his chain right in front of me, so I was boxed in for a moment. Of course, a win would have been nicer, but in the end I'm just happy to take home a podium today.” Bob Jungels

"The plan was to be in the breakaway with Bob Jungels - Bob, as a very experienced pro, executed this plan perfectly. He knows exactly when to push and when to ride conservatively in a breakaway. Of course we would have loved to come back to the hotel with the win, but we are more than happy with the result today. Our four climbers crossed the line within the reduced bunch and without losing any time - another strong team effort!” Enrico Gasparotto, Sports Director

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start city of Novelda at 1:30 PM, local time: 14C (58F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 3 mph (5 km/hr). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Giulio Ciccone's Team Trek-Segafredo.

There was barely a flat meter in the second stage of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, which meant the peloton hit the final climb with 3000 meters of climbing in their already stinging legs. Ineos Grenadiers set the pace on the final ascent, a three-kilometer ramp to Alto de Pinos, as riders were shed from the group. Giulio kept his cool, waiting for his moment to strike. A dangerous attack was brought back inside the final kilometer leaving everything to play for.

Cicco smelt victory. When Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious) launched his bid for victory, some 400 meters from the line, Giulio jumped straight onto his wheel as others scrambled behind. The final corner came 250 meters from the line, and as soon as Cicco spotted it he launched his sprint past Landa, leaving him enough room to post up and savor his success. It wouldn’t be a Giulio Ciccone victory without his signature celebration: the Italian launched his 100% sunglasses in the air, destined to make one lucky fan as happy as Cicco.

With 10 bonus seconds on offer to the winner, Giulio moves into the lead of the race by four seconds with three hilly stages remaining. The Trek-Segafredo boys will be right behind him to help bring home the GC win.

In the winner’s words:
"It was a very hard stage, and we knew since the beginning that today we could have fireworks and be competitive. In days like this tactics are very important and we knew we are a strong enough Team to have our say. We’re only with five riders, but what mattered today was the quality of the team. My teammates did an amazing job putting me in the best position, lots of kudos to them. We rode really well, I saved energy in the peloton as much as possible and then we want all-in in the finale. Our DS Gregy [Rast] kept us calm repeating to stay in the first wheels until that the last corner, at 200 meters. That was the key moment. Everyone knows my attacking instinct, maybe that’s why he repeated this so many times. In the end, I kept a cool mind and followed my good feeling in the legs. Winning is never easy, but this morning I was optimistic of my chance. The desire to win was strong in my mind.

"Now I have the leader’s jersey and of course I’ll fight to keep it until the end. Volta Valenciana is definitely not an easy race. We’ll have some hard days, with lots of climbs and lots can happen. We’re only five in the Team, but we’re strong and we’ll fight to try win the GC.

"I was really motivated to not lose the chance to start this season with a win. I had a good preparation, a good winter and I knew my condition was at a good level. I have several goals and targets for this season and today’s win is boost of confidence for what will come. We’re only at the start of the season, but it’s good to kick off the season with this win. Anyway, now it’s time, for me and for the Team to enjoy the win."

Wednesday, February 1: Stage 1, Orihuela - Altea, 189.4 km

Stage 1 map & profile

Biniam Girmay takes the first stage.

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 2: 1976 - 2018 is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Altea at 1:40 PM, local tme: 14C (58F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Olav Kooij's Team Jumbo-Visma.

After a long day, Olav Kooij came close to winning the first stage of the Tour of Valencia. Behind Biniam Girmay, the sprinter of Team Jumbo-Visma had to settle for second place in Altea.

Kooij struggled on the Coll de Rates, the day's first climb, seventy kilometres from the finish. "I knew it would be difficult today. I had to pass on the first climb, but fortunately, I was able to catch up to the peloton on the descent with the support of my teammates", he said.

Sports Director Frans Maassen saw a strong team and was pleased with the race. "The race went according to plan. We came to Spain with a young group of riders. The Tour of Valencia is traditionally a race where you can let these talents gain experience. It is a shame that Olav came up short after the team's strong ride."

Although close, Team Jumbo-sprinter Visma's had to yield Biniam Girmay the victory. "I got into the wind a bit too early", the Dutchman said. "They started sprinting a bit earlier than me. There was a small gap that I couldn't close. But I can be happy with the second place. It's the first race of the season for me. It is great that we have started again."

Maassen agreed with Kooij. "A first race is never easy. Later in the week, Olav should have another opportunity to win a stage."

Tomorrow's stage will be challenging with seven categorised climbs. "The second day will really be a ride for the GC riders. Maybe we can try something with Koen, Sam and Tom", the sports director concluded.
