Weather at the finish city of Luxembourg Limpertsberg at 2:15 PM, local time: 22C (72F), fair, with the wind from the south at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Bart Lemmen (Visma | Lease a Bike) did not start.

Here's the final report from the race organizer:

Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) won the 84th edition of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg. On the final stage, spanning 176.9 km between Mersch and Luxembourg-Limpertsberg, his fourth place, 3 seconds behind stage winner David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), was enough to snatch the overall victory from world champion Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck).

Right from the start, the riders went full throttle. A breakaway group of 19 riders formed shortly after, including top contenders van der Poel and Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates). Attacks were frequent, with van der Poel, the overall leader, even riding alone at the front at one point.

After about 60 km, the race calmed down. The leading group, including van der Poel and Hirschi, was caught, and three riders broke away: Archie Ryan (Education – Easypost), Lorenzo Milesi (Movistar), and Johannes Staune-Mittet (Team Visma – Lease a Bike), gaining nearly three minutes. However, in the final 30 km, as they tackled the closing circuit with the steep Pabeierbierg climb three times, they too stood no chance.

It was in the final lap that a decisive group, featuring Gaudu, Tiberi, Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), and Jordan Jegat (TotalEnergies), managed to break away and were not caught before the finish. Van der Poel ended up finishing sixth, 29 seconds behind, and had to settle for second place overall, 15 seconds back. Gaudu finished third overall, just 16 seconds behind.

David Gaudu: “I didn’t win last season, and only once this year. That’s why the last year and a half has been tough. Winning is the best feeling a rider can experience. At the start of the stage, all the overall favorites were in the breakaway group, including me. In the end, it was about waiting and being well-positioned. I wanted to have a small lead before the last climb. Luckily, everything worked out.”

Antonio Tiberi: “It’s amazing to take the overall win. I’m really happy. From the first day, I knew I was in good shape. After finishing second in the time trial, I realized the overall victory was within reach. Luckily, everything worked out. We knew it would be a tough stage with many attacks. I was also in the big breakaway group at the start. Then I waited for the final lap.”

Mathieu van der Poel: “It’s a real shame. Since stage two, I’ve had just two teammates with me, and that became evident today. I could have used some help in the final. I had the legs to win, but it’s hard to do it alone. Still, I’m happy because I felt good. I’m satisfied with this race because my sensations were really great.”

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the race city of Differdange at 2:10 PM. local time: 23C (74F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 8 km/hr (5mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage four summary.

Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) won the fourth stage of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg. In the 15.5 km individual time trial around Differdange, he claimed victory with a time of 19’11”, finishing 7 seconds ahead of Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) and 11 seconds ahead of Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek).

Lotto Dstny riders grab their bikes to warm up before the time trial.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) finished fifth, 19 seconds behind, and regained the yellow jersey of the overall leader. Before the final stage, the reigning world champion holds a 3-second lead over Ayuso and Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step), who are tied. Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) is fourth, 8 seconds behind.

Juan Ayuso: “I just wanted to go full gas from the start. I knew that with good legs I would have a chance to win. I wanted to make the difference on the climb, and I succeeded. It was tough because I didn’t know how fast the other favorites would be, so I focused completely on myself. Tomorrow we’ll try something to maybe go for the overall victory.”

Mathieu van der Poel: “A time trial is always hard, and today was no different. I managed to pace my energy well, but after reaching the top of the Col de l’Europe, I couldn’t hold the speed I really wanted. Still, I’m very happy with the result and how I feel. Of course, I want to defend the yellow jersey now, even though it wasn’t really the main goal. We’ll see what happens. The Škoda Tour de Luxembourg has already been very successful for me.”

Weather at the finish city of Diekirch at 1:40 PM, local time: 21C (69F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Jordan Labrosse (Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale) & Adam Toupalik (TDT-Unibet) did not start.

Note: Davide Formolo was disqualified due to an illegal position on the bike during a descent.

Here's the report from Team Visma | Lease a bike:

Bart Lemmen and Wilco Kelderman finished sixth and ninth in the queen stage of the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg. Both riders from Team Visma | Lease a Bike showed their good form and finished in the group behind winner Mauri Vansevenant.

The race:
After two successful first days, in which Christophe Laporte sprinted to a second and fourth place, the Dutch cycling team started the longest stage of the five-day stage race in Luxembourg full of confidence. The Frenchman, second in the general classification, quickly saw that a top ranking in the final classification would not be possible. Sports director Maarten Wynants explains: “We were already afraid that it would be tough for Christophe today. During the race he indicated that he was not feeling very well. After that, we went all out for Bart and Wilco.”

Louis Veraeke (Soudal Quick-Step) & Johannes Kulset (Uno-X Mobility) away on the day's first climb, the Côte de Michelsbierg. Looks like a lovely day for a bike race.

After several attacks by both Dutch riders, an escape attempt by Vansevenant and Davide Formolo did find its way to the finish in Diekirch. In the chasing group, Lemmen sprinted to sixth place, Kelderman crossed the finish line ninth. “It was good to see that Bart and Wilco both tried to attack on the local laps. That they are both so strong is promising for the final weekend. Our best time trialists are still close in the general classification”, Wynants knows.

Lemmen, ninth in the general classification after today, already showed himself in the front in last week’s races in Canada and is now also showing his good form closer to home. “I am in a good shape, but as always we are taking it day by day. Hopefully I will ride a good time trial tomorrow.” After the time trial of over fifteen kilometres, a tough final stage awaits the riders on Sunday.

“It’s nice that we have several cards to play in the final weekend. Wilco is also showing his class here and the atmosphere in the team is very good. Today we took a lot of responsibility as a team in the race”, the 28-year-old rider says. Next week, in his debut year in the WorldTour, Lemmen will ride his first World Championships on behalf of the Netherlands. "I am really looking forward to that of course, but first we have to finish well in Luxembourg."

Thursday, September 19: Stage 2, Junglinster - Schifflange, 155.0 km

Stage 2 map & profile

Mads Pedersen takes the stage.

Tour de France: 2019

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2019: A Year of New Faces is available in both Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Schifflange at 1:45 PM, local time: 23C (73F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 27 km/hr (17 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Cedrik Bakke Christopherson (TDT Unibet) & Marco Brenner (Tudor Pro Cycling) did not start. Soon after the start Mattias Skjelmose (Ldl-Trek) abandoned after crashing.

Here's the race organizer's stage two summary:

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) has won the second stage of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg. After 155 km between Junglinster and Schifflange, he triumphed ahead of the overall leader Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Robin Froidevaux (Tudor Pro Cycling Team). Christophe Laporte (Team Visma – Lease a Bike) finished fourth.

GC leader Mathieu van der Poel before the stage start.

Alexandre Kess (Team Luxembourg) and Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal Quick-Step) formed the breakaway duo of the day. However, after just 70 km, Reinderink dropped back after securing the first place in the mountain classification at the Montée de Steinsel. Kess continued alone at the front, with a maximum lead of three minutes. The Luxembourger, who had also been in the breakaway on the first stage, ultimately stood no chance.

On the final circuit around Differdange, the race really picked up. There were attacks from several riders, but in the end, it came down to a sprint of the leading group, which included all the favorites. Pedersen benefited from the strong work of his Lidl-Trek team to ultimately take the victory.

Mads Pedersen wins stage two.

Van der Poel retained the yellow jersey as overall leader, holding a 10-second lead over Laporte.

One of the favorites has, however, dropped out: Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), who won the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg two years ago, was unable to continue after a crash shortly after the start of the stage.

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek): “It wasn’t just luck that I had enough teammates with me at the end. We have a strong team. It was a tough finale. We were able to counter all the attacks. The lead-out at the end was great. Of course, having a Luxembourger like Alex Kirsch on the team is an advantage. He knows every road and always tells us where we need to position ourselves. But it’s not just here; Alex is an important teammate throughout the entire season. Our original goal was to win the general classification with Mattias Skjelmose, but unfortunately, he had to drop out today. Tomorrow will be tough, and the profile doesn’t necessarily suit me.”

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck): “It was another good day. The last five kilometers were very fast and hectic. The sprint was difficult, so I’m happy with the second place. There are only three of us left on the team, but that’s okay. We’re trying to control the stages somehow. Today went fine, but tomorrow that will be impossible. We’ll see what happens. It’s going to be very interesting.”

Weather at the start/finish city of Luxembourg at 1:35 PM, local time: 22C (71F), sunny, with the wind frm the northeast at 27 km/hr (17 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Soren Kragh Andersen & Jimmy Janssens (both Alpecin-Deceuninck) did not start.

Here's the report from second-place Christophe Laporte's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Christophe Laporte crossed the line in second place in the first stage of the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg. The Frenchman, like Bart Lemmen and Wilco Kelderman, made an excellent impression by finishing in the top ten. Mathieu van der Poel won the first stage.

Four riders quickly went on the attack in the first stage of the Luxembourg stage race. The riders created a lead of more than seven minutes but were caught by the peloton on the final climb, in which the Team Visma | Lease a Bike riders regularly showed themselves at the front.

The pace then picked up on the flanks of the Côte de Stafelter. Lemmen tried but got no space from the peloton, resulting in a large group heading to the finish. In the streets of Luxembourg City, the riders of the yellow-black brigade impressed by finishing in the top ten with Laporte, Lemmen, and Kelderman.

“We are happy about today,” team manager Maarten Wynants says. “The intention was to sprint with Laporte, and we succeeded. A dangerous leading group got the space, but with Tosh Van der Sande regularly in the lead, we were able to close the gap. Unfortunately, Christophe then faced a strong Mathieu van der Poel in the sprint.”

"With three riders in the top ten, we have a good perspective for the general classification"

Mathieu van der Poel will start stage two in yellow.

Maarten Wynants:
“With three riders in the top ten, we have a good perspective for the general classification,” Wynants continued. "Bart and Wilco already rode strongly today despite being at the start in Canada last weekend. With the time trial and difficult stages still to come, things are looking good. Also, Christophe still has a chance to do a good GC.”

Lemmen, who already showed his good form last weekend in Canada, is happy with his performance today. “Somehow I expected to have good legs, but it's nice that I can show it in a strong field. We now have three riders well placed in the general classification, and there are still some nice stages coming up where there are opportunities.”
