Romain Grégoire appears to be rather well-pleased with winning his second 2025 Tour de Luxembourg stage.

Weather at the finish town of Limpertsberg at 2:40 PM, local time: 13C (56F), rain, with the wind from the northwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). The rain is forecast to continue through 7:00 PM.

The stage: The traditional finale with the climbs of Nommern, Gralingen, Kautenbach and three brutal ascents of the short but steep Pabeierbierg.

To succeed 2024 winner Antonio Tiberi, riders will have to give everything until the very last climb.

Limpertsberg is a quarter in northwestern Luxembourg City.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Romain Grégoire's Team Groupama-FDJ.

Romain Grégoire’s run isn’t over! Still hungry despite his recent successes, the young Frenchman once again made his mark this Sunday, on the fifth and final stage of the Tour de Luxembourg. This time, he won after a twenty-kilometre breakaway with Ben Healy, whom he got rid of with one kilometre to go. Unstoppable, the 22-year-old puncher claimed his sixth victory of the season, his twelfth as a pro rider, while allowing the Groupama-FDJ cycling team to reach the fifteen-win mark in 2025.

Towards the city of Luxembourg, the Groupama-FDJ cycling team was coming not only on familiar ground this Sunday, but also on conquered land, in the final stage of the national Tour. In the recent past, both Valentin Madouas and David Gaudu, twice, had already won on the finishing circuit through the streets of the Grand Duchy’s capital. This surely gave Romain Grégoire, who was out for revenge after losing the yellow jersey 48 hours earlier, some ideas.

“I felt very bad, for myself and for the team, for missing out on Friday,” he said. “I wasn’t at my level, and I was keen to show today that I could do much better than that and win.” “We were expecting a big fight for the breakaway, and we were a bit scared of that given that there were a lot of riders far behind in the general classification,” Benoît Vaugrenard said. “So the goal was to put a guy in the breakaway, because you never know, and that’s what Enzo did very well.”

With around ten other competitors, the French rider managed to join the leading group, but the peloton remained at a reasonable distance all day, in the pouring rain. Shortly before the finishing circuit, the Groupama-FDJ rider accelerated with Mats Wenzel in the lead, while the peloton was only forty seconds behind.

“We saw that UAE was taking it a bit easy because their goal was not to catch the breakaway, so it was time to get going,” Benoît added. “There was a nice descent that was ideal for doing so, we did it, and that brought other teams into the mix.” At the bottom of the first of three climbs of the Pabeierberg (800m at 9.2%), located about one kilometre from the finish line, things really got serious. Romain Grégoire was perfectly launched by Lorenzo Germani, who set a strong pace on the first few slopes, before following Ben Healy’s move.

“It wasn’t really the plan to go from so far, but we know that things can unfold early on a circuit like this, especially in the rain, and that it’s very difficult for a peloton to organize itself,” explained Romain. “When I saw Ben Healy attack, I didn’t hesitate for a second. We know he’s a rider to follow when the race opens up, because he’s always going to ride, and ride hard.” “You needed to be able to keep up with him, and Romain was, then we quickly saw that things were slowing down a bit behind because Healy was quite far back in the general classification,” explained Benoît. “It was good for us.”

Across the finish line, two laps from the end, the Franco-Irish duo came back on Enzo Paleni’s group, then prevented Marc Hirschi from bridging across while catching the last fugitive, Wenzel, twenty kilometres from the finish. The cooperation between the two men proved extremely smooth, and the gap quickly increased to thirty seconds, and even to one minute after another time up the Pabeierberg. As the bell announced the final twelve-kilometre lap, Romain Grégoire and Ben Healy had more than a minute’s lead over the group of favorites.

The last lap did not change the situation, and the duo came at the bottom of the final climb battling for the win. “It was clear that we each had our card to play,” said Romain. “His was to climb full gas from the bottom and mine was to wait for the final to play on my explosiveness. It wasn’t easy, but I held on until the top.” However, the French rider wasn’t satisfied with that. “With this technical final and these few corners, I decided to counterattack with a kilometre to go,” he smiled. “It took boldness to attack him at the top of the climb,” Benoît said. “He scared me a bit, because Healy isn’t the type to give up.” Although the Irishman didn’t give up, it proved insufficient to close the twenty metres separating him from the rider from Besançon.

After a last effort in the final straight, Romain Grégoire was able to put his hands in the air before even crossing the finish line. “It was close, because he wasn’t far behind, but it was enough,” the young Frenchman enjoyed. “It’s pretty crazy to find myself here again five days after my first victory. I’ve had a pretty crazy week in Luxembourg and doing this last stage in the rain made things even more difficult. I’m just so happy to win.” Impressive and always in control, he thus brought the Groupama-FDJ cycling team its fourth victory in five years in this stage. He also won for the fourth time this September.

“With two stage wins, the contract for the week has been more than fulfilled,” Benoît added. “I also want to highlight the team’s commitment. Eddy and everyone else rode a superb race, and we had a leader who was up to the task. It also gives him confidence after Friday’s stage. We can now say that it was for sure a bad day and that the legs are really there.” A very good omen for the next races.

The stage: The individual time trial is a decisive moment of the race. Riders face a demanding 26.3 km course that will test pacing and power. Specialists against the clock will aim to take advantage here to defend or overturn standings.

The race: First rider off was Max Walker (EF Education-EasyPost) at 3:22 PM.

Here's the report from stage winner Ethan Hayter's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

One hour after Soudal Quick-Step celebrated its 40th success of the season in Slovakia, Ethan Hayter added another win to this impressive tally, on the penultimate stage of the Tour de Luxembourg. It was a well-deserved victory for the Brit – just two days after he celebrated his 27th birthday – in what was his first outing in the ITT National Champion jersey that he won at the end of June.

Held around Niederanven, over a 26.3km course featuring a couple of testing uphill sections, the stage 4 time trial was a demanding one, especially in the second part, where the headwind only complicated matters. This didn’t seem to bother Hayter, who made the difference in the last twelve kilometers of the race after already setting the fastest time at the first checkpoint.

Ethan stopped the clock in 30:38 after blitzing the course at a spectacular 51.5km/h average speed and won comfortably, almost half a minute ahead of new GC leader Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates). For Hayter, who’s in his first season with Soudal Quick-Step, this was his third success of the year, after the one he took at the Belgium Tour and the National Championships.

“I’m really happy, as it wasn’t the easiest time trial in my career. I pushed a hard tempo, and maybe it took a bit until I found my rhythm, but I then managed to sustain it and tried to give everything I had each time the road went up. I’m delighted not just with this win, but also with the fact Soudal Quick-Step kept believing in me, and I could repay them for this. I love time trials and I’m happy to show again what I’m capable of in this type of races”, a smiling Ethan said after the podium ceremony in Luxembourg.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Paris-Roubaix: The Inside Story - All the bumps of cycling's cobbled classic is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish at the finish city of Vianden at 2:15 PM, local time: 24C (76F), sunny, with the wind from the south-southeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: The queen stage! Featuring Beaufort and Munshausen climbs, a passage through Hosingen, then three ascents of the Niklosbierg in the final 50 km – before the iconic finish at Vianden Castle.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Mattias Skjelmose's Team Lidl-Trek.

Mattias Skjelmose claimed the spoils in Vianden after a hard day of racing which saw a serious GC shake up, and Skjelmose ending the day as the new race leader. A challenging circuit had the peloton contend with three ascents of Montée de Niklosbierg and coupled with attacks from Søren Kragh Andersen, was enough to blow the race apart. A select group formed at the front of the race, including Skjelmose and teammate Toms Skujins.

A late attack by Marc Hirschi [Tudor] looked promising, but he was caught in the final kilometer on the uphill slog to the finish thanks to work from Skujins. Skjelmose waited patiently on the wheel of Brandon McNulty, making his move in the final 150 meters and holding off Jegat [Totalenergies] to the finish line.

“It was a difficult final, everyone knew if you attacked early then you would have the motorbike and Marc (Hirschi) was really good, he was really strong and it was difficult to catch him back. Luckily Brandon [McNulty] started his sprint early and I could overtake in the last moment. Toms did super good today, we spoke earlier because I wasn’t feeling super and I asked him if he could win and he said ‘no, we go all in for you’. He delivered me perfectly and then I just had to execute the plan in the end. It will be difficult tomorrow in the TT to keep the leaders jersey but we’ll do what we can and hopefully we can win the race”.

Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies

Les Woodland's book Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies: The rise and fall of bicycle racing's champions is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Mamer at 2:10 PM, local time: 22C (72F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: After the Côte de Wintrange and Côte de Remerschen, the stage heads to Mamer, where the finish is located near the house of Nicolas Frantz, double Tour de France winner. A likely day for the sprinters!

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage two report.

The second stage of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg was reserved for the sprinters.

Admittedly, a breakaway group of seven riders managed to escape early on, but the sprinters’ teams gave them no chance over the 168.4 km between Remich and Mamer. In the end, it was Luxembourg’s own Mathieu Kockelmann (Luxembourg National Team) who triumphed in the bunch sprint, right in front of the birthplace of double Tour de France winner Nicolas Frantz, finishing ahead of Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and Tom Donnenwirth (Groupama-FDJ). Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) retains the yellow jersey as overall race leader.

Lovely day for a bike race. Photo: Anouk

The day’s breakaway consisted of Gilles Baptiste (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Jonas Geens (Team Flanders-Baloise), Victor Papon (Wagner-Bazin), Pedro Pinto (Efapel Cycling), Loïc Bettendorff (Hrinkow Advarics), Malte Hellerup (Team Coloquick), and Mil Morang (Luxembourg National Team). They built up a gap of four and a half minutes, but as on the previous day, the escape was caught before the finish, setting up a mass sprint.

Mathieu Kockelmann (Luxembourg National Team), stage winner: “I didn’t have a lead-out train for the sprint, so I tried to stay calm and follow the right opponents. I placed myself behind Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost), who launched his sprint too early. Since I had studied videos of previous finishes in Mamer, I knew that patience was key. I am overjoyed. I have no words to describe what it means to win a stage wearing the national team jersey. I’m still in the U23 category, and in this race, we have the smallest team. So this is incredible.”

Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ), overall leader: “It’s cool to wear the yellow jersey. But tomorrow, it will be tough to keep it. It was a good day. People think it’s a flat stage, but in Luxembourg, it’s always hilly. Even this kind of stage hurts the legs. Still, I enjoyed it. Tomorrow will be a really tough stage. It could suit me. We’ll approach it like a one-day race.”

Weather at the start/finish city of Luxembourg at 2:10 PM, local time: 17C (63F), cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: A demanding opener featuring the climbs of Putscheid, Bourscheid and Eschdorf. The Spuerkeess Bonus Sprint comes 51 km from the finish. The full ascent of the Montée de Clausen guarantees a thrilling finale in the capital.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage one report.

Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) won the first stage of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg in Luxembourg City. After 152.8 km and a thrilling finale on the Montée de Clausen, he crossed the line ahead of Marijn Van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) and Marc Hirschi (Tudor Pro Cycling Team). With this victory, the Frenchman also claimed the yellow jersey as overall race leader.

Shortly after the start, six riders broke away: Andrea Pietrobon (Team Polti-Visit Malta), Quentin Bezza (Wagner Bazin), André Carvalho (Efapel Cycling), Malte Hellerup (Team Coloquick), as well as two riders from the Luxembourg National Team, Mats Berns and Mil Morang. They led the race on the climbs of the Montée de Putscheid, the Côte de Bourscheid, and the Côte d’Eschdorf.

However, their lead over the peloton never exceeded 3’30’’, and they were eventually caught. The bunch remained together until the final climb, where Grégoire unleashed his power in the sprint to take the victory.

Stage winner Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ): “What a sprint! Yesterday, I took a look at the finish with my friends and saw that this climb could suit me. I was really motivated to fight for this victory. I launched the sprint a bit too early, but fortunately, it was enough in the end. I was afraid of being overtaken. My team did a fantastic job. Today, we really took control of the race.“
