Les Woodland's book Cycling's World Championships: The Inside Story is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of San Benedetto del Tronto at 1:30 PM, local time: 10C (50F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 24 km/hr (15 km/hr). No rain is forecast.

The course: A mixed stage in its first part that then becomes entirely flat in the last 80km. The start is slightly uphill with a passage through Offida to reach a height that is then maintained with slight ups and downs through Rotella, Montedinove and Castignano. After the passage from Ripatransone, a long descent to Grottammare follows, where the riders will enter a final circuit of around 15km that is set to be repeated 5 times. The route of the circuit is mainly on straight and wide tarmac roads.

Final Kilometers:
The last 3 kilometers take place on wide and mostly straight roads with some slight bends on medium-width roads in the first part. There is a last double bend about 1km from the finish. The finish line is on a 8m wide roadway with an asphalt surface.

The race: 146 riders began today's stage. There were three on-starters: Jhonatan Restrepo (Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli), Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos-Grenadiers) & Enric Mas (Movistar). The latter was in full battle for the final podium yesterday, but a fall on the Carpegna downhill forced him to say goodbye to any hopes of a good classification.

The stage started at 11:12 AM. Just after the stage started there was a crash that forced Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education) and Mattia Bais (Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli) to abandon.

Here's the stage seven report from winner Phil Bauhaus' Team Bahrain Victorious:

It was a perfect ending at the Tirreno-Adriatico for Bahrain Victorious. The team finished the 7-day Italian stage race with Phil Bauhaus sprinting to victory in San Benedetto del Tronto, confirming 3rd place on the General Classification podium with Mikel Landa and winning the best team ranking.

The race’s final day was a 159km course starting and finishing in San Benedetto del Tronto.

After a first mixed part, the course was entirely flat in the last 80km, with a 14.5km flat circuit repeated five times which was made for a sprint showdown.

The day’s breakaway formed initially by three riders was caught at 15km to go on the last lap, with the sprinters team working on setting up the finale for their fast men. Phil couldn’t count on a lead-out train on the last km with the teammates also focussed on protecting the leader Mikel Landa. But the German sprinter was impressive doing everything perfectly and taking his first success of the season, outsprinting Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel-Premier Tech) and Kaden Groves (BikeExchange-Jayco).

Phil Bauhaus: “It was a fantastic week for the team. Today as a team, we did everything possible for us. The boys did an amazing job in supporting me in the finale. Then on the last km, I was mainly on my own, and I knew I had to do timing perfectly, then I followed other wheels. I’m super happy with this victory. It is a big one, actually.”

Mikel Landa backs up last year’s final result at Tirreno-Adriatico as he finished in 3rd place GC, behind the winner Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma). After the penultimate stage, the Spaniard moved onto the GC podium with an 11" advantage to Richie Porte. The small gap was easily preserved on this final stage for the sprinters.

Mikel Landa: “I’m pleased to be on the podium again after last season. I needed this podium for my confidence. I’m very delighted not only for me but also for my teammates because we did a super good week. We have been on the podium also as the best team, and we took a win with Phil so super good”.

Bahrain Victorious also capped off a great team performance throughout the 7 stages, crowned the best team overall.

Gorazd Stangelj, Team Bahrain Victorious Sports Director: “It’s more than expected. When you try hard, and the guys are ready, and mentally focused for the results. Today, Phil showed his skills and that he’s improving year by year. I’m very happy that he achieved this result today because now also for him it’s going to be easier to go towards the next races. He was incredible. He did everything alone on the last km. The timing was perfect. Everything was done like in the book. I’m delighted to guide in the races these guys”.

Dirty Feet: Early days of the Tour de France

Les Woodland's book Dirty Feet: How the Great Unwashed Created the Tour de France is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Carpegna at 1:45 PM, local time: 4C (40F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The course: A stage divided into two parts. The first undulates almost all the way down to the coast with a slight ascent to the first passage to the finish line. The second consists of a challenging final circuit of Cippo di Carpegna, to be repeated twice. The circuit features a climb of 6km with gradients of up to 14% and a subsequent technical descent to the finish line for a second lap.

Final Kilometers
The last 3 kilometers are half downhill at speed and half uphill. The final kilometer follows a gradient of about 3% with a short flat section in the last 400m. Arrival on asphalt, 7m wide.

The race: 215 rider began stage six at 10:55. There were two non-starters: Thibault Guernalec and Daniel McClay, both of Team Arkéa Samsic, have dropped out of the race.

Here's the report from stage winner and GC leader Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates:

A week after the solitary feat at Strade Bianche, Tadej Pogačar struck again, reaching the finish line of the 6th stage of Tirreno-Adriatico solo on the road from Apecchio to Carpegna of 215 km and with the double pass on Monte Carpegna.

The talent from UAE Team Emirates made his move 16 km from the finish, on the second ascent of Monte Carpegna (6.2 km at 9.6% average gradient): responding to a move by Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious), Pogačar sank a single, but decisive attack, gaining about twenty seconds in a short time on a trio of pursuers made up of Landa, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and Richie Porte (Ineos Grenadiers).

The advantage widened to almost 2 ‘at the brow (-12.5 km), so that the Slovenian was able to pedal smoothly to the finish to take his sixth victory of the season (+ 1’02 “over Vingegaard ), and the seventeenth win for the Emirati team.

Pogačar: “First of all I would like to thank the team and my team mates, they were once again fantastic all day and allowed me to take the last climb in the best position. I had good legs, Marc Soler was making a good pace, there were some attacks and, at that point, I decided to try to go all the way to the top at my own pace, giving it my all. It was very cold and, in this way, I also kept warm.
I am very happy to have won and to have repaid the work of the whole team during these last days: today my teammates struggled at the head of the group for 200 km, with the headwind, so it’s nice to have conquered the queen stage for them.

"Now only one day remains, we remain calm and serene, hoping that Pascal Ackermann can recover from the efforts made for the team in the recent stages ”.

Weather at the finish city of Fermo at 2:10 PM, local time: 8C (47F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 10% chance of rain.

The course: This is the stage of the ‘muri’ – short, steep climbs best described as ‘walls’. It is characterised by two distinct parts. The first heads through the Apennines to the gates of the province of Fermo and the second is more rolling, with 5 ‘walls’ between the approach to the finish and the final circuit. The first part touches on Castelraimondo, San Severino Marche in order to climb to the Valico di Pietra Rossa. A descent follows on Cingoli and Treia, to then pass from one valley to another through a series of climbs and descents. After Montegranaro the riders will climb the Muro di Monte Urano (max 15% gradient). They then enter Fermo from Lido to tackle the Capodarco climb (max 18% gradient), and in rapid sequence, the Fermo-Strada Calderari climb with a subsequent passage near the finish line. From here a semi-circuit of about 18km begins, featuring the challenging climbs of Madonnetta d’Ete and a repeat of Fermo-Strada Calderari.

Final Kilometers
The last few kilometres are all substantially uphill. After the ascent of Strada Calderari, which leads to the town of Fermo (with gradients of up to 20%), the climb continues along narrow stone-paved streets, with gradients remaining high. A short descent brings some respite with 750m to go, followed by a climb to the finish line on a ramp of around 10% gradient. The finish line lies on a 6m wide asphalt surface.

The race: 160 riders began stage five at 1:20 PM. There were three non-starters: Simone Consonni (Cofidis), Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) & Nacer Bouhanni (Arkéa-Samsic)

Here's the report from GC leader Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates:

Tadej Pogačar approaches the queen stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico as race leader.
The UAE Team Emirates captain boasts a 9 “advantage over his closest rival Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) after the 5th stage, the 155km Sefro-Fermo ending with a jagged circuit finish.

Success on the day went to Warren Barguil (Team Arkéa Samsic), who proved to be the strongest of the 12 cyclists who created the main breakaway of the race.
Pogačar, after UAE Team Emirates had controlled the group during the stage, followed an Evenepoel attack, with Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) quick to join the duo.

The three riders took the wrong road at a curve and thus saw their attack neutralised.

The Slovenian from UAE Team Emirates, quickly found his way and crossed the finish line in 6th position (+28 “from the winner), closely followed by Vingegaard and Evenepoel. Tomorrow the 6th stage, from Apecchio-Carpegna of 215 km with the double passage on Monte Carpegna (6.2 km at an average gradient of 9.6%) will define the general classification.

Pogačar: “There were three of us in the chasing group, but we took the wrong way at a right turn: it was not easy to see the signs of the right direction, it can happen in a race. At that point, it was too difficult to catch the leaders.
Without that accident, the race could have ended differently, but today’s goal was to keep the leader’s jersey and we did it, also thanks to a good team effort to control a breakaway in which strong riders were pedaling. We are happy to still be in the lead in going to tackle the queen stage tomorrow.”

Weather at the finish city of Bellante at 2:46 PM, local time: 12C (54F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The course: A stage that crosses the Apennines. From the Marmore Falls, the route climbs more or less continuously with reasonably gentle gradients to the Torre Fuscello pass before reaching Leonessa and taking the Via Salaria to Posta. After a brief ascent the Via Salaria winds gently downhill until it reaches Ascoli Piceno. A short climb to Maltignano follows, before entering the final circuit to be ridden twice after the first passage of the finish line.

Final Kilometers
The final kilometers take place on the circuit, along two complete laps. After Bellante, the riders will head downhill, with ups and downs to Sant’Onofrio where the road becomes wider and straighter. The road heads first towards the valley then parallel to the river before tackling the climb of about 3.8km that leads to the finish. Gradients here are in the region of 7% with peaks of 11%. Arrival on 7m wide tarmac.

The race: 164 riders began stage 4 at 12:03.

Here's the report from stage winner and new race leader Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates:

A special day for UAE Team Emirates saw a double victory at Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico through Brandon McNulty and Tadej Pogačar respectively.

Tadej Pogačar took charge of affairs at Tirreno Adriatico taking the stage win and leaders jersey on day 4 from Cascata delle Marmore to Bellante (202km).

With 70 km to go, the group pushed by Davide Formolo and the whole UAE Team Emirates started to catch the 10 riders who had animated the breakaway of the day.

Today's stage went into the steep stuff. Here's the peloton about an hour into the stage. RCS photo.

The stage was decided in the final circuit of Bellante, with the ascent of 4k m at 7% which they did three times.

Here, attacks and counter attacks were well managed by Pogačar and his teammates, with the Slovenian reaching the last kilometere in the leading group and accelerating furiously in the last 500 meters of the race, breaking away from all his rivals.

Fifth success of the season for Pogačar, who takes the lead in the General Classification of Tirreno-Adriatico, also leading the points classification and that of best youngster.

Pogačar: “After the great work by the whole team, today I could only try to win and give my best. We worked perfectly and everything went as we hoped. There are still three important stages in where we need to work hard, both tomorrow and especially in the one after which will be the queen stage. We have to stay focused and give our best.”

Tomorrow the fifth stage will see the riders take on 155km from Sefro to Fermo, with the last 50km jagged before another uphill finish.

Earlier in the day Brandon McNulty was the absolute protagonist of the fifth stage of Paris-Nice, a 188.8km day that took the riders from Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert to Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut.

The American was among the breakaway riders already after 10 km of the race, and was never seen again by the peloton. Having reached the final ascent of the Col de La Mure (7.6km at 8.3%), McNulty attacked without looking back, crossing the finish line first after the last 40km alone.

First victory in a World Tour race and third victory of the season for the 23-year-old of UAE Team Emirates, who had already conquered the Faun-Ardèche Classic on this same road on February 26th.

With today’s two victories, the number of wins this season for UAE Team Emirates rises to 15.

McNulty: “I am very happy with my first victory in a World Tour race, especially for how the week started amidst bad luck and various problems. Today everything went according to plan, I got into the breakaway and had good sensations throughout the stage.

Arriving at the penultimate climb, the team gave me the green light if I was feeling good and I decided to attack. This is a victory that definitely gives me morale to keep giving my best and aim to do even better. ”

Tomorrow the sixth and longest stage of the week is scheduled, 213km with the last peak to be climbed 25km from the end.

Weather at the finish city of Terni at 1:35 PM, local time: 13C (55F), fair, with the wind from the northeast at 5 km/hr (3 mph). No rain is forecast.

The course: A slightly undulating stage punctuated by short straights and flat stretches of rest. The first part of the stage features some noteworthy climbs such as the ‘La Foce’ and the road between Fabro and Ficulle. After Orvieto the stage finale begins, which remains challenging both in terms of elevation and terrain. After Amelia the riders face a long descent to enter the Narni and Terni plain. Wide and straight roads follow, with a sometimes well-worn road surface, but without excessive difficulty, leading to the finish line in the city centre of Terni on Corso del Popolo.

Final Kilometers:
The last 3km take place on wide, straight roads, sometimes with a central reservation present, interspersed with large roundabouts. Within the final kilometer, the riders will take a wide bend to the left on the flat. There is then a change from an asphalt surface to stone paving at the entrance to the 350m long finishing straight on a 7.5m wide road

The race: Peter Sagan did not start the race because of stomach troubles. That left a starting peloton of 165 riders.

Here is the report from stage winner Caleb Ewan's Lotto Soudal team:

Caleb Ewan has taken his first stage win at Tirreno-Adriatico. The Australian Lotto Soudal rider was the fastest at the end of stage three, which ended in a bunch sprint in Terni. The peloton had to pull out all the stops to catch an elite four-rider group. In the technical run-in towards the finish, Ewan navigated his way through the bunch, started the sprint in perfect position, launched his typical acceleration on the cobbles in Terni and took his first stage win at Tirreno-Adriatico. For Ewan, it is already his third win of the season after earlier victories at the Saudi Tour and Tour du Var.

“Finally I managed to pull off a win at Tirreno-Adriatico”, Caleb Ewan began. “I’ve been at the start several times before but always something went wrong. Today it was far from easy but this time we got it right in the race where I’ve wanted to win a stage for a long time.”

In Tirreno-Adriatico, the sprinters were given another opportunity today with a 170 kilometres long stage between Murlo and Terni, ridden on rolling roads in Tuscany and Umbria. For a moment there was a bit of a stir in the bunch when Caleb Ewan hit the ground about 90 kilometres from the finish. The Australian came into contact with a staff member of Ineos Grenadiers during the feed zone. Ewan had to change bikes but didn’t suffer from any other consequences.

The sprint teams took no risks as the six-rider breakaway was already reeled in at just under 50 kilometres to go. When after the intermediate sprint in Amelia four riders pushed on, the alarm bells went off in the peloton. Lotto Soudal protected its sprinter Caleb Ewan at the front rows of the bunch but had to spend valuable energy in chasing the four-rider elite group. In the final kilometres, Caleb Ewan found his own way perfectly and began the final straight at the very front. Arnaud Démare launched powerfully but with his typical kick to the line, Caleb Ewan came past the Frenchman to take his first stage win at Tirreno-Adriatico.

“Due to that late attack of the elite group including Alaphilippe and Pogacar, we had to use up our guys earlier than we had hoped. But we knew that we shouldn’t give them much of an advantage so we already lost several guys even before the proper sprint preparation began. As a consequence, I had to find my own way during the finale. I just tried to follow the right wheels and do my own thing at the end. Arnaud Démare looked good and still had a teammate with him so I went for his wheel. I knew that I had to be among the first four riders going into the final corner. Such finishes, slightly uphill and with a drag to the line really suit me. So I am really happy to finish it off today.”

“With three stages already in the pocket, I am really satisfied with how the start of the season is going. My first big goal is next week and this victory gives me a lot of confidence”, concludes Caleb Ewan, who – after the podium ceremony - gave his flowers to the woman he collided with in the feed zone.

Tour de France: 2019

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2019: A Year of New Faces is available as an audiobook here. For the Kindle eBook version, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Sovicille at 1:45 PM, local time: 9C (48F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 18 km/hr (11 mph). No rain is forecast.

The course: A mixed-terrain stage, undulating particularly in its second part. A departure from Camaiore leads the riders across the Pisan plain to Volterra, touching on Pisa, Ponsacco and Lajatico. The group will then enter the surroundings of Siena, with a series of ups and downs of varying degrees of difficulty until the riders reach Colonna di Montarrenti where a circuit of sorts begins. The race will pass through Rosia and, after a short stretch on the ss.223, will climb the hill of La Pineta before passing through Monticiano and reaching the San Galgano plain. Another climb to Chiusdino follows and then a short climb (Frosini) back to Colonna di Montarrenti. The riders pass through Rosia once more to reach a flat finish.

Final Kilometers:
The last few kilometres are virtually flat. There is a slight descent initially, followed by a slight ascent up to the finish. The last bend is situated about 3km from the finish. Arrival on asphalt, 7m wide roadway.

The race: 167 riders began stage two at 11:56 AM.

Here's the race report from GC second-place Remco Evenepoel's Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team:

The longest stage of this year’s race (219km) got underway from Camaiore and took the bunch to Sovicille, a small town lying just ten kilometers from Siena, one of Italy’s most charming cities and the place where Kasper Asgreen nabbed his first podium of the season last weekend, at Strade Bianche.

Containing several climbs inside the final 40 kilometers, the stage was controlled by several teams who had an interest in bringing everything back together for a bunch sprint, which eventually happened despite a late attack that forced the bunch to work hard in order to stick to the plan.

Launched by the powerful Asgreen, Davide Ballerini – who is making this week his first outing for the Wolfpack since the Saudi Tour – showed that he is slowly back on track after a bout of illness that forced him to miss several races, and finished seventh in Sovicille, where Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Fenix) got the victory. The white jersey remained in possession of Remco Evenepoel, who pulled it on after his strong opening stage performance in the Lido di Camaiore individual time trial.

Olympics 50 Craziest Stories

Les Woodland's book The Olympics' 50 Craziest Stories: A Five Ring Circus is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at at the turnaround at Forte Dei Marmi at 2:14 PM, local time: 10C (50F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The course: An Individual time trial consisting of two practically straight sectors that run outwards and backwards on the same roadway, punctuated by a slightly more complex and twisty halfway turning point. The route is straight for the first 5.6km until the turning point at Forte dei Marmi where the intermediate time check is taken. Then the route continues, with a narrow roadway and two right-angle bends (to the left) which, at 7.7km from the finish line, will take the riders back to the Forte dei Marmi seafront to return to Lido di Camaiore.

Final Kilometers:
The last 3 kilometres are flat, heading in a southerly direction, and consist of a long straight stretch which, at 1200m from the finish line, presents the only ‘technical’ challenge of the route. This consists of a right-left turn on a narrow roadway that leads to the final one kilometer-long straight. Arrival on asphalt, width 6.5m.

The race: There are 167 riders divided into 24 teams scheduled to ride today.

Here's the report from winner Filippo Gana's INEOS Grenadiers team:

Filippo Ganna got the team’s Tirreno Adriatico week off to a perfect start with victory in the opening time trial.

The world champ clocked a time of 15 minutes and 17 seconds across the pan-flat 13.9-kilometre course, with a winning margin of 11 seconds.

The Grenadier had held a slender advantage through the opening split, but powered home his winning margin with a tailwind finish, taking the blue leader’s jersey in the process.

There were a host of strong rides from Ganna’s fellow Grenadiers. Tao Geoghegan Hart clocked the 14th fastest time, with Richie’s Carapaz and Porte 20th and 25th respectively.

Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) proved to be Ganna’s closest challenger, with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) in third, 18 seconds back.

Filippo Ganna:
"Today we did a perfect race. I pushed a lot ahead of coming here, as I love this race and today I showed how much I want to win. This is an important result for me and the team and now we look to tomorrow – we have a sprint and we will see if we can conserve the jersey.

"When we started there was a lot of headwind and thought ‘today is hard’. Then we turned and the speed improved. It’s a special race and a special result.

"I will support my teammates and we will see if my legs are ready to arrive at the end of stages. For sure we need to save a little bit of energy because in less than two weeks we have a special race in Italy (Milan-San Remo) and I want to arrive with good legs."

Monday also saw stage two of Paris-Nice, with crosswinds ripping into the peloton on flat, exposed roads.

The Grenadiers were alert to the threat and placed Adam Yates, Dani Martinez and Luke Rowe in the lead group. That positioning proved key as the group largely stayed away to the finish. Our GC duo sit 39 seconds behind overall leader Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma).
