Weather at the city of AlUla, near the course, at 4:45 PM, local time: 19C (67F), fair, with the wind from the north at 18 km/hr (11 mph). No rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage five summary.

The final stage of the 2025 AlUla Tour had all the ingredients to worry the GC contenders with strong winds blowing over the twisty course around the Camel Cup Track, but Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) again showed his impressive shape never being trapped in an echelon. The British rider made it in the first group to the line capturing the overall victory. Pidcock wins his first ever elite stage race ahead of Fredrik Dversnes and Johannes Kulset (both of Uno X Mobility). It was a perfect day for the Q36.5 squad with Matteo Moschetti sprinting to victory in this last stage and beating Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla) and Juan-Sebastian Molano (UAE XRG) to the line.

When they woke up this morning and looked out of their windows, the GC contenders and especially Green Jersey Tom Pidcock knew that they would have a very busy and eventful day. Wind was indeed on the menu of their fifth and final stage, and with the many changes in direction, echelons were bound to happen. Wind was also in all the conversations as the riders gathered at the AlUla Camel cup track, start of this last stage. And straight from the beginning, the 115 remaining riders had to battle their way to the front of the peloton.

HATHERLY IN A SECOND ECHELON
The first breakaway attempt occurred at km 13 when Mikkel Bjerg (UAE XRG) and Aivaras Mikutis (Tudor) powered away. They enjoyed a 1’30” lead when the pace picked up dramatically in the pack and the wind started having its effect. Indeed at km 25, the pack broke up into several groups with 29 men in the first group including the likes of Green Jersey Pidcock, his main rival Rainer Kepplinger (TBV) but also Tim Merlier (Soudal Quickstep), Alexander Kristoff (Uno X Mobility) but not second man overall Alan Hatherly (Jayco AlUla), his team-mate Dylan Groenewegen or White jersey, Johannes Kulset (Uno X).

4 ESCAPEES
At km 39, the front two riders were caught. At the first Intermediate Active sprint won by Mikutis (Q36), the gap between the two main groups had reached 35”. The battle continued when Rainer Kepplinger suffered a puncture at km 55, dropping out of the leading group. The second Active sprint was later won by Liepins (Q36) as the gap had slightly dropped. Eventually, the situation settled down and the pack bunched up together again at km 79. Shortly after, at km 90, four men gave it a go at the front: Uriarte (EKP), Garibbo (JCL), Bregnhoj (TSG) and Desal (WB2). Not too concerned by this breakaway, the pack let the escapees pull away. At km 105, they could enjoy a lead of 1’10.

ECHELONS PART 2
A right turn made the situation change again as the strongest riders of the peloton made the best of the crosswind. This time Rainer Kepplinger and Alan Hatherly were trapped behind. The two GC contenders never managed to reduce the gap and would eventually lose their second and third positions on the podium. While the front four were caught at km 145, the gap between the two main echelons started increasing. With 20kms to go the leading Green jersey group including all the main sprinters had a 17” lead. That gap increased to 25” at the first passage on the line where a bonus sprint was claimed by Dversnes (UNO X). With 4kms to go, there was no catching the front group of around forty riders enjoying a 45” lead.

MOSCHETTI BACK IN WINNING WAYS
On the long final straight and at an extremely fast speed due to the tailwind, Matteo Moschetti timed his effort perfectly, only just outsprinting Dylan Groenewegen and Juan-Sebastian Molano. The Italian claims his first success since 2023 and the 10th of his career. He also gives his Q36.5 team a third stage victory on this AlUla after the two won by Pidcock.

Matteo Moschetti wins the final stage.

PIDCOCK IN A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN
Finishing in the leading group (23rd of the stage), Pidcock naturally keeps the leadership of the event and wins the AlUla Tour for the first time. The double Olympic Mountain-bike champion captures his first ever stage race at the elite professional level. In the final overall standings, Pidcock wins by a comfortable lead of 1’09” over Fredrik Dversnes and 1’12” over Johannes Kulset who also wins the White jersey for the best young rider. The points classification is also claimed by Pidcock while Reinders (WB2) wins the Orange jersey for the Most Active rider.

Weather at the city of Alula, very close to the finish, at 3:55 PM, local time: 23C (74F), fair, and no wind and no rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage four report.

In impressive fashion overall leader Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) made the best of the extremely steep climb to the Skyviews of Harrad Uwayrid to capture his second stage success at the AlUla Tour and comfort his Green jersey. The British double Olympic champion in Mountain bike started pulling away halfway up the climb never to be caught despite the headwind on the very long straight to the finish. Pidcock crossed the line with a 12sec advantage over Alan Hatherly (Jayco AlUla) and Rainer Kepplinger (Bahrain Victorious). With one stage to go, he can enjoy a 29sec overall lead over his closest rival.

After Hegra yesterday, the riders of the 2025 AlUla Tour were gifted with another spectacular start for their fourth stage of the week. Indeed in the middle of Ashar Valley, the impressive mirror building of the Maraya Concert Hall was the place to be. The 116 remaining riders of the race took off at 1:03 PM for another demanding stage including the very steep climb up to the Skyviews of Harrat Uwayrid. A day for the climbers and for the GC contenders, the first of course being Green jersey Tom Pidcock.

INTENSE BATTLE FOR THE BREAKAWAY
It was an intense battle as soon as km 0 with the first Intermediate Active sprint being set at km 20. That first sprint was claimed by Saenta (TSG) ahead of Romele (XAT) and Orange jersey wearer Reinders (WB2). Eventually three riders powered away: Romele and Vinokourov (XAT) and Reinders. They would later be caught (at km 55) by 5 other riders: Koishi (JCL), Abd Halim (TSG), Miltiadis and Thimachai (ROI) and Renard Haquin (WB2), while the pack remained at 1’30”.

MORE POINTS FOR MOST ACTIVE RIDER REINDERS
At the second Intermediate Active sprint (km 71), Reinders collected three extra points while the pack led by teams Q36.6 and Jayco-Al Ula had moved closer at 1’20. Five riders remained at the front enjoying a 1’ lead with 20kms to go while Vinokourov, Miltiadis and Thimachai failed to keep up with the pace. The final escapees were eventually caught at km 130 just as the road started going uphill. On the steepest parts of the climb, Tom Pidcock took command of the front group of around thirty riders.

PIDCOCK UNSTOPPABLE
The Brit then powered away halfway up the hill. He reached the top with a 20” advantage over a group of four including Hatherly, Dunbar (both Jayco-AlUla) and Kepplinger (TBV), capturing three extra seconds at the bonus sprint. On the final straight and despite the headwind with 8kms to go, Pidcock managed to keep a decent enough lead. He eventually crossed the finish line well clear of Hatherly, second and Kepplinger third.

GREEN JERSEY SOLIDLY ON SHOULDERS OF PIDCOCK
After his success at Bir Jaydah Mountain on Wednesday, Pidcock adds a second win to his season, the 7th of his pro career. The 25-year-old increases his overall lead. He now has a 29sec advantage over Kepplinger and 32” over Hatherly with only one stage to go. Pidcock is now the joint-leader of the points classification alongside Tim Merlier (Soudal- Quickstep), also a two-time stage winner on this edition. The White jersey for the best young rider changes shoulders and goes from those of Adne Holter to those of his Uno X Mobility team-mate Johannes Kulset. Jens Reinders comforts his lead in the Most Active Rider’s standings

Weather at Tayma at 4:00 PM, local time: 17C (63F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There was no rain today.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Tim Merlier returned at the top of the points classification after another impeccable sprint in Saudi Arabia, this time in Tayma Fort, where the third stage of the race concluded. It was the Belgian’s tenth success in the Middle East, and his fourth at the AlUla Tour in just two starts there.

The longest stage of the race saw the bunch leave behind Hegra – one of the major places of the Nabataean civilization more than 2000 years ago and a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site nowadays – and take on an undulating course that didn’t put any problems to the sprinters’ teams, who easily controlled the seven-man breakaway.

Ayco Bastiaens was once again on pace-setting duties, spending dozens of kilometers at the front of the bunch and working tirelessly to claw back time. The breakaway was caught just before the crosswinds wreaked havoc, leaving some 40-odd riders in the front group. It was the cue for Soudal Quick-Step to put down the hammer and push hard in the last 30 kilometers together with other teams to distance those caught out the back.

In the hectic finale, Bert Van Lerberghe again did a phenomenal job, guiding Tim through the many corners and launching him 200 meters from the line. The European Champion put in a monster sprint on the urban cobbles of Tayma Fort and won by a bike length – a success that will see him sport the red jersey on the penultimate day of the race.

“I can’t say I was stressed in the echelons, because I had a good team around me and they put in another superb effort to keep me protected. I felt good today, the final kilometers were a bit hectic, but we remained calm despite some confusion there and Bert did a superb job once again. As I exited the last corner I just went full gas until the finish, and now I’m delighted that I could celebrate another win in this part of the world, where I enjoy racing”, a happy Tim said after the stage.

Weather forecast at AlUla for Wednesday at noon: 19C (65F), Sunny, with the wind from the north at 9 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: The race was neutralized due to concerns about the road surface. The shortened race resumed for one final climb towards the finish line.

Here's the race organizer's stage two summary:

The first hilly stage of the 2025 AlUla Tour saw double Mountain-bike Olympic champion Tom Pidcock shine under his new Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team colours. The British rider made the best of the final climb up Bir Jaydah Mountain to power away with 500m to go. He eventually crossed the finish line triumphantly beating Rainer Kepplinger (Bahrain Victorious) and World Mountain-bike champion Alan Hatherly (Jayco-AlUla). Thanks to his first win of the season, Pidcock takes command of the GC and will be wearing the overall leader’s Green Jersey.

After a first day of intense racing on Tuesday, some of the 118 riders of the Al Ula Tour had the pleasure of having a stroll in the labyrinth of picturesque streets of the Old Town that welcomed the start of the day’s stage. Moments of calm before the battle on stage 2: a 157kms ride all the way to the south-west of Al Ula where a final difficult circuit including three climbs up Bir Jaydah Mountain Wikrah would welcome the riders for one of the toughest stage of the event.

5 MEN IN THE LEAD
As soon as kilometre 3, five riders pulled away from the pack: Raccani (JCL), Rosli and Abd Halim (TSG), Thimachai (ROI) and Reynders (WB2). Their lead grew to 2’05” as soon as kilometre 7.5. At the first Intermediate Active Sprint (km 77), won by Most Active Rider (Orange Jersey) Muhammad Rosli who was already present in yesterday’s breakaway, the gap had reached 3’20”. The front men then started struggling. Thimachain was the first to be dropped shortly followed by Rosli and Abd Halim, leaving only two men in the lead while the peloton led by teams Q36.5, Jayco-AlUla and Picnic Post.nl moved closer.

RACE NEUTRALISED
Once on the final circuit, after Raccani made it first at the second Intermediate Active Sprint at the first passage of the line (km 103), a decision was taken to shorten the distance of the race due to a lot of gravel on the descent and based on the safety concerns of the riders. There would therefore only be one extra lap to be covered (instead of two) and the descent would be neutralized. After that neutralization, with five kilometres to go, the front two could only count on a lead of 28”. They were eventually caught three kilometres from the finish.

PIDCOCK UNLEASHED
On the final climb up Bir Jaydah Mountain, Rafal Majka (UAD) set up an intense pace with only a few riders managing to follow. After Kepplinger (TBV) was the first to attack, the decisive move came with 500m to go when Tom Pidcock made his effort. He managed to pull away in the last 300m and victoriously crossed the line, beating Kepplinger by 4” and a man who had beaten him at the UCI Mountain-Bike World Championships last year: South-Africa’s Alan Hatherly by 7”.

NEW OVERALL LEADER
Pidcock claims the 6th professional road win of his career after successes such as a stage at the 2022 Tour de France or the Amstel Gold race last year. By doing so the 25-year-old double Olympic Champion (2020 and 2024) captures the overall leader’s Green Jersey and can now enjoy an 8” lead over his closest rival Kepplinger. The Brit also leads the points classification while Adne Holter (UXM) becomes the new best young rider (White Jersey). Muhammad Rosli keeps the Most Active rider’s Orange jersey on his shoulders.

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 2: 1971 - 2011 is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at AlUla at 8:00 AM, local time: 9C (49F), fair, with no wind. The forecast is for the temperature to climb to 22C (72F) in the afternoon.

The race: here's the report from stage winner Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Tim Merlier was unstoppable on the opening stage of the Middle East race, delivering Soudal Quick-Step’s first victory of the year and confirming he remains the fastest man in the sport, after an excellent 2024 during which he racked up a total of 16 wins.

“It’s always great to start the season with a victory, especially on your first day of racing. I like this event and the weather and I’m happy I could win on the first day here. I knew I was in a good shape coming to the start, but I wanted to see exactly where I was after the winter, and I’m delighted with the outcome.”

The finish in Al Manshiyah Train Station was identical with the one of last year, when Tim came from the back in a spectacular manner to clinch a solid third place despite a late bike change. This time, everything went smoothly for the European Champion, who unleashed his sprint with 150 meters to go and gave no chance to the other riders, taking a clear and comfortable victory Tuesday afternoon.

“Getting a victory early in the season is good because it motivated the team even more. The sprint was nervous and it wasn’t easy to get everything in place, but we managed it in the end. The guys did a tremendous amount of work controlling the breakaway and Bert provided another perfect lead-out when it mattered. I lost him a bit with two kilometers to go, but came back in his wheel in the U-turn and he took me in an ideal position from where I started my sprint at the right moment. I’m happy with this result, it’s a really nice confidence-boost”, said Tim, who leads the GC, but also the points classification at the AlUla Tour.
