Weather at the city of Vallejimeno, on the route, 50 km from the finish, at 2:40 PM, local time: 31C (87F), sunny, with the wind from the south-southwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). At 4:00 PM there is a 37% chance of showers.
The race: Jarno Widmar (Lotto Intermarché) & Luke Tuckwell (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) did not start. Early in the stage Josh Burnett (Burgos Burpellet BH) crashed out of the race and Matteo Scalco (XDS Astana), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ United), Zak Erzen (Bahrain Victorious) & Michael Leonard (EF Education-EasyPost) abandoned.

Lagunas de Neila once again served as the ultimate arbiter of the Vuelta a Burgos during a grueling final stage, where Giulio Pellizzari claimed the win and Felix Gall secured the purple jersey as the overall winner.
The Burgos race concluded its five days of competition with one of the province's most iconic cycling images. The slopes of Lagunas de Neila were, once again, the chosen stage to decide a race that arrived at its final day with everything still to play for, forcing the top contenders to test each other's strength right up to the final kilometer.
From the start, the stage was defined by a high pace and constant attempts to break the peloton's discipline. The group even fragmented in the early stages, though the race regrouped before a series of attacks launched in search of a breakaway—one that took some time to fully establish itself.
Past the halfway point, a large leading group finally formed, with new riders joining along the way. Among them was Lennart Jasch, a rider capable of threatening Gall’s lead, which forced the peloton to remain vigilant and keep the time gaps under control.
The field was whittled down progressively as the stage unfolded. The breakaway lost riders and was eventually reduced to a small group featuring Kevin Vermaerke, Gianmarco Garofoli, and Vincenzo Albanese. Later, Vermaerke moved to the front and was joined by Pavel Sivakov and Diels Driessen, though their advantage over the group of favorites never became decisive.
Driessen was the last survivor of the breakaway and even dared to dream of victory as they neared Neila. The peloton accelerated in the final kilometers, finally catching him with barely three kilometers left to the finish line.
That was the moment the Vuelta a Burgos entered its decisive phase. The initial slopes of Lagunas de Neila triggered moves among the general classification contenders, forcing Gall to respond to his rivals' accelerations. Giulio Ciccone and Oscar Onley were among the first to try their luck, while Pellizzari kept a close watch on the moves.
Pablo Torres also attempted to break away from the group of favorites. The Spaniard managed to open a small gap, and Pellizzari was the only one able to follow him. The Italian, however, still had another gear and ended up riding solo, heading into the final meters with victory within reach.
Pellizzari thus capped off an outstanding performance on the Burgos climb, raising his arms in triumph at Lagunas de Neila. Behind him, Oscar Onley finished second and Felix Gall third—a result sufficient for the Austrian to retain the overall lead and secure the final victory in the 2026 Vuelta a Burgos.
Stage 5: Giulio Pellizzari, stage winner
Q: Congratulations, Giulio. What does it mean to you to win at such an iconic venue as Lagunas de Neila?
GP: Yes, it’s incredible for me. I had the team with me the whole time, even when my legs were running out of steam. We gave it our all today to win this stage. I’m very proud of my team; what they did for me is amazing. It’s a brutal climb.
Q: The final climb was incredibly tough. At what point did you feel you had the legs to attack and go for the win?
GP: Well, I was pretty tired at the foot of the climb, but I never stopped believing I had to do something for my team. Plus, I was already out of the general classification battle, so the contenders were watching each other, and I seized the moment to attack. And then I enjoyed the last 400 meters.
Q: Finishing the Vuelta a Burgos by winning the queen stage is a great sign. How do you feel about this race looking ahead to your next goals?
GP: Yes, it’s truly been a fantastic week for us. We shared some really fun moments with the team. It was my first race after a long break following the Giro. I didn't feel entirely at my best, but I never stopped believing in my team or myself.
Felix Gall, winner of the 2026 Vuelta a Burgos
Q: Congratulations on taking the overall win, Felix. Yesterday you told us today could be a good day for you—that you were confident you’d be as strong as you were on Stage 3. It’s safe to say that turned out to be the case.
FG: Yes, just as expected, there was a great battle today; it was a brutal stage and... well, I’m very happy—it’s my first overall victory. I put in a solid block of altitude training and came straight here; I’ve definitely gained a lot of confidence this week. Now I’ll have a few quiet days at home before I get back to racing.
Q: How did you manage the race during the final climbs?
FG: I didn't feel quite as good as I did on Stage 3. Plus, of course, Óscar and Giulio are very strong riders, so I knew it would be a tough fight. I think it worked in my favor that Giulio attacked and the time bonuses were used up, because I saw it would be hard to gap the others; so I tried to use that to my advantage, and I’m glad it worked out.
Q: Is this your first time climbing Neila in a race? What did you think of it?
FG: It’s an incredibly tough climb. Also, the road surface is a bit uneven, which I think makes it harder; it’s already steep on its own, and with that kind of surface, it becomes a brutal climb—the sort you only find in Spain, I think.

Weather at the finish city of Briviesca at 2:55 PM, local time: 32C (89F), sunny, with the wind from the north at 8 km/h (5 mph). No rain is forecat.
The race: Gianni Moscon (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) was disqualified after stage three because of improper conduct and behavoir that is indecent and endangers others. I don't know anymore about this other than that short statement.
Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Vitorious) did not start.
Here's the report from stage winner Matthew Brennan's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:
Matthew Brennan has struck again at the Vuelta a Burgos. The Brit from Team Visma | Lease a Bike won Stage 4 in Briviesca after an exciting bunch sprint, taking his second stage victory of the race. It is also already his seventh win of the season.
"Coming into the finale, the plan was actually to move up on the right side, but we eventually had to switch to the left. We adapted well to that," Brennan said afterwards. "It was important to be well positioned with the final corners coming up. The guys did an excellent job there.
"In the last 400 meters, I maybe slipped a little too far back, which was a bit risky. I was lucky to find the space again to open up my sprint. I trusted my legs, and it worked out well."
After yesterday’s tough mountain stage, the sprinters had another opportunity today. Stage 4 was expected to be the biggest chance for the fast finishers, although the rolling terrain meant it was far from an easy day. An early breakaway of three riders got away, but the peloton kept the situation under control and brought them back before the finale.
In the final kilometers, Team Visma | Lease a Bike positioned itself well for the sprint. Brennan perfectly finished off the strong work of his teammates and powered to victory. The Brit had to deal with challenging conditions along the way, with temperatures reaching 39 degrees in Burgos.
"I was slowly roasting from the inside out," Brennan laughed. "I’m glad I could finish it off in the end because it was a tough day in the heat. It felt like we were riding through a desert all day. But it has already been a great week with the guys on the team."
Team director Maarten Wynants was especially pleased with the way the team executed the finale. "Everything we planned worked out nicely. It is a very young team that delivered the lead-out. Steven Kruijswijk also did a lot of work on the front, which allowed us to save Tim Rex a little longer and meant he could do crucial work in the finale."
"It is a great combination of riders who are doing more than we hoped for beforehand. That allowed us to finish the finale off in a really good way."
With this victory, Brennan continues his strong run and takes his second stage win at the Vuelta a Burgos. Team Visma | Lease a Bike also remains in the fight for a strong overall result with Ben Tulett. He finished 20th today and maintains his seventh place in the general classification. With one stage remaining, the team now looks ahead to the final day, where the Brit will fight to defend his position.

Weather at the city of Bárcenas, on the route, 60 km from the finish, at 2:40 PM: 20C (68F), cloudy, with the wind from the east-northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 15% chance of rain.
The race: Here's the race organizer's stage three report.
Stage 3 of the 48th Vuelta a Burgos lived up to all expectations. The debut of the El Escudo climb in the Burgos race did not disappoint, ultimately serving as the stage where the day's victory was decided and the purple leader's jersey changed hands. Austrian rider Felix Gall proved strongest on the final slopes, claiming the stage win and taking the overall lead as the race enters its decisive phase.
The day began at a blistering pace. An initial breakaway attempt on the Alto de Bocos barely troubled the peloton, which quickly neutralized the move. Shortly after, the day's main breakaway formed, featuring Bastien Tronchon, Gorka Corres, Mathieu Burgaudeau, Valentin Retailleau, Iker Mintegi, and Diego Uriarte—a six-man group that managed to build a lead of over three and a half minutes.
Diego Uriarte emerged as the standout figure of the breakaway. The Team Kern Pharma rider was the strongest on the categorized climbs of La Hoya, Ojo Guareña, and Retuerta, solidifying his dominance in the mountains classification as the group traversed some of the most spectacular landscapes in the northern Burgos province.
The race dynamic shifted when Pavel Sivakov decided to shake things up. The UAE Team Emirates rider attacked from the peloton alongside Jasper Schoofs to bridge the gap to the breakaway more than 80 kilometers from the finish. His presence raised the level of the breakaway and forced a reaction from the favorites' teams, who realized they could no longer afford to give the group any more leeway.
An intense chase ensued. INEOS Grenadiers and Lidl-Trek took charge of the peloton, chipping away at the time gap as the breakaway began to shed riders. One by one, they dropped back until the group was reduced to a few survivors led by Sivakov—though even his powerful pace could not withstand the peloton's surge.
The opening slopes of El Escudo put an end to any hopes of success for the breakaway riders. Once the race was in full swing, the general classification teams took charge. Nairo Quintana upped the pace to set things up for Enric Mas, while a mechanical issue sidelined Jay Vine, one of UAE’s key riders.
The decisive selection took place in the final kilometers of the climb. Pablo Torres tried to catch the field off guard with a long-range attack, but the move was neutralized before Felix Gall launched the decisive blow. The Austrian accelerated on the steepest section of the climb, and only Oscar Onley was initially able to respond. However, the leader eventually cracked under the Decathlon AG2R rider's change of pace, while Giulio Ciccone bridged the gap from behind to limit his losses.
Gall crested the summit first and held his lead all the way to the finish line, raising his arms in victory and pulling on the purple leader's jersey—capping off a display of sheer strength on one of this edition's most demanding stages.
Felix Gall:
Q: Congratulations on the win. It’s your first victory on Spanish soil, and it’s at the Vuelta a Burgos. How are you feeling?
Felix Gall: It’s my first time racing the Vuelta a Burgos, and I was really keen to take part. I’d heard great things about it, and today was the first stage that really suited me. I don’t win very often—it’s only my third professional victory—so it’s fantastic. I’d just come off a very intense training block, and returning to racing today, I felt really good.
Q: Today was what we could call the "queen stage"—a very tough stage with plenty of climbs. How would you describe it?
Felix Gall: I think a high pace was set, especially in the middle section of the race, on winding, windy roads. I felt good, and my team did a great job keeping me safe and allowing me to save energy. Plus, in the final stretch, I always had a teammate nearby, and I tried attacking a couple of times. Then, I managed to break away in the closing stages.
Q: You hold the provisional lead, given the time gap and the position of the rider in second place. Do you think you can hold onto it until the end and win the race?
Felix Gall: Of course, that’s the goal, but first and foremost, I’m happy with today. You never know what can happen in a bike race. For starters, I think tomorrow will be a sprint, and then on Saturday we have another very tough stage. I’m taking it day by day, and we’ll see what happens in the end.

Oscar Onley claimed his first victory for Netcompany INEOS in style after sprinting to the win on stage two of the Vuelta a Burgos.
The Brit was set up by strong work from his teammates on the Pineda de la Sierra climb, moving to the fore before out-sprinting Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) on the uphill drag to the line in Valle del Sol.
Victory was enough to elevate Onley into the leader's jersey, taking a four-second advantage thanks to bonus seconds and gaps back to the chasing GC contenders.
Brandon Rivera played a key role in the final kilometres, piloting Onley into position on the climb before hitting the front to set the tempo with two kilometres to go.
Throughout the day the team had maintained a strong position in the peloton, and moved to the front at the key moment to set up Onley for an impressive win.

Weather at the finish city of Burgos at 2:35 PM, local time: 27C (79F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Matthew Brennan's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.
Team Visma | Lease a Bike has made the perfect start to the Vuelta a Burgos. Matthew Brennan sprinted to victory in the opening stage to Burgos, claiming his sixth win of the season. Ben Tulett completed the success by finishing second, securing a perfect one-two finish for the team and putting Brennan into the first leader’s jersey of the race.
Brennan was delighted afterwards with the way his team controlled the finale. “The guys rode really well for me today. Steven controlled the race all day, which was great to see. It gave me the confidence that we could finish it off,” the Brit explained after his victory. “In the finale, Ben was in front of me and he kept the pace high. Everything was under control. After the final corner, I went full gas and I’m really happy that it worked out. All the guys were very happy, it was a really nice team effort.”
The victory also gives Brennan extra confidence heading into his upcoming goals. “This gives me a lot of confidence for the Vuelta and shows that I can do things on hard finishes like this.”
The first stage of the Spanish stage race followed a classic scenario. Four riders went clear early on and built a lead of more than two minutes. As expected, Team Visma | Lease a Bike took responsibility in the peloton. “We were the favorites today and that proved to be the case,” sports director Maarten Wynants explained afterwards. “All the teams were looking at us, and it was up to us to control the breakaway.” That plan was executed perfectly, with Steven Kruijswijk setting the pace at the front of the peloton for a large part of the day.
The team stayed calm throughout the stage and maintained control of the race. In the closing kilometers, the final escapees were brought back and Team Visma | Lease a Bike could fully focus on the finale. “In the end, the guys finished it off perfectly,” Wynants said about the team’s execution. “It was a hectic finale where positioning was really important, just like having good legs. A very nice one-two today.”
The finish at Alto del Castillo provided a spectacular finale. On the uphill final kilometer, averaging 6.1%, positioning was crucial. Brennan and Tulett were brought perfectly into position, after which Brennan proved to be the fastest in the uphill sprint. Tulett completed the celebrations by finishing second and securing the one-two finish.

Thanks to this strong opening day, Brennan will start tomorrow’s stage in the leader’s jersey of the Vuelta a Burgos. The team now looks ahead to the second stage, a 178-kilometer route to Pineda de la Sierra, where another challenging day awaits in the Spanish stage race.
