Stage 1 route map

Stage 1 route map.

2010 marks the 75th anniversary and 65th edition of the Vuelta a España. Here's a quick summary of the 2010 race:

The 21 stages will cover 3,337.9 km, starting in Seville and finishing in Madrid. The exact distance will probably change slightly by race day.

11 of the stages are flat and 8 of them will be in the medium to high mountains.

I wonder if the Tour de France's part ownership of the Vuelta is showing in there being only 46 km of individual time trialing, that coming in stage 17. The Tour has been reducing ITT distance in the last few years. The individual time trial is pan-flat with long straight stretches, so a time-trial specialist should prevail in this stage. The opening 16.5 km Stage 1 Team Time Trial to be held in night-time Seville should be spectacular.

There is a lot of climbing, with 40 rated climbs scattered throughout the race. The first real climbing will occur in stage 3, with a third and 2 first category (both up the Leon Pass) ascents. The last real climb in stage 3 comes 20 km before the finish, but there is a sting in the tail of this stage, a 1.5 km climb to Malaga's castle.

3 Special Category ascents
10 First Category
14 Second Category
13 Third Category

The mountain goats should be thrilled with 6 hilltop finishes. Beyond a doubt the winner of this Vuelta will be a superb climber.
