1928 Tour Quick Facts:

5,377 km raced at an average speed of 27.886 km/hr

The 162 starters were put in three groups: sponsored pro teams, independents put on regional teams by the organizers (such as Normandie), and fully independent touristes-routiers. None of the touristes-routiers, who had a seperate and later start times in many of the stages, finished the 1928 Tour.

The Tour's start was moved up to June 17 to avoid a conflict with the Amsterdam Olympic Games.

Nicolas Frantz, on the powerful Alcyon team, took the lead on the first day and held it to the end. Frantz's frame broke in stage 19. A bike dealer gave him a replacement bike that was too small, but despite his losing 38 minutes because of the incident, Frantz's lead was so large he retained an overpowering grip on the race.
