The race: This is the fourteenth time Puy de Dôme has been a stage finish, starting with the 1952 Tour where Fausto Coppi finished alone atop the famous volcano, 10 seconds ahead of Jan Nolten and 31 seconds ahead of Gino Bartali.

Here is the famous battle between Jacques Anquetil (left) & Raymond Poulidor (right) as they race up Puy de Dôme in the 1964 Tour de France.

There was a non-starter, Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek). His team said, "Since his heavy crash on Stage 5, Quinn’s condition has not improved as we had hoped". That left a starting peloton of 169 riders who were given their official start at 1:41.

Almost as soon as the start signal was given a group of fourteen went clear: Clément Berthet (AG2R-Citroën), Michael Woods and Guillaume Boivin (Israel-Premier Tech), Matteo Jorgenson and Gorka Izagirre (Movistar), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Pierre Latour and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies), David De La Cruz and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny), Jonas Abrahamsen and Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X).

Eleven kilometers into the stage the break had a lead of one minute. Others tried to bridge up to the break but after 21 kilometers of racing, all the riders attempting to bridge up to the break had been brought back to the pack. The break at that point had a lead of 1 minute 45 seconds.

After 37 kilometers of racing the break was 6 minutes 32 seconds ahead of the field. Seven kilometers later the gap was nine minutes with Jumbo-Visma pulling the peloton.

The gap grew to 9 minutes 50 seconds by the time the race had covered 57 kilometers.

With 95 kilometers to go the gap was 10 minutes 29 seconds and the current King of the Mountains, Neilson Powless, was first over both the Côte de Felletin and the Côte de Pontcharraud.

Abut 100 kilometers into the stage the gap started to come down a bit, to around 10 minutes.

Just before the third category Côte de Pontaumur, one of the riders in the break, Guillaume Boivin, tried to get away. He was reeled in on the hill and it was again Neilson Powless who reached the top first.

After a few more attacks, with 51 kilometers to the finish the 14 riders were again together with a 12 minute 45 second lead.

Shortly after that regrouping Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) took off from the break while Boivin was dropped from the lead group. With 38 kilometers to go Jorgenson was 30 seconds ahead of the break while the peloton was at 13 minutes 55 seconds.

Four riders, Mohoric, Powless, Burgaudeau and De La Cruz then escaped the break in an attempt to join Jorgenson. De la Cruz had the misfortune to need a new bike because of mechanical trouble.

Matteo Jorgenson climbing Puy de Dôme

With 17 kilometers to go Jorgenson remained in front with Burgaudeau, Powless & Mohoric 51 seconds back, followed by 7 riders 1min 35 sec behind Jorgenson. The peloton with Vingegaard, Pogacar and Hindley were 16 minutes 19 seconds behind Jorgenson.

It was time to do some serious climbing as Jorgenson reached the foot of Puy de Dôme with a one-minute lead on the chasing trio of Burgaudeau, Powless & Mohoric. De la Cruz was 25 seconds behind the three chasers. The Jumbo-Visma led pack was more than 16 minutes back.

With 10 kilometers to go Jorgenson was still a minute ahead of his three chasers.

Meanwhile, Neilson Powless can see the mountaintop he has to reach.

As the slopes of the volcano started to bite the riders in the peloton, Dylan van Baarle, Wout van Aert and Wilco Kelderman led the pack. Riders started to get dropped.

With three kilometers to go Jorgenson was 1 minute 20 seconds ahead of Burgaudeau, Powless & Mohoric. Then Mohoric left Powless and Burgaudeau in an attempt to catch Jorgenson. At this point Michael Woods was not far behind Powless and Burgaudeau.

Woods then passed the pair and was alone behind Mohoric, who was less than a minute behind Jorgenson.

With 1.2 kilometers to go Woods was 35 seconds behind Jorgenson with Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates leading the remains of the peloton.

With 4 kilometers to go there were eight riders in the Yellow Jersey group: Jonas Vingegaard and Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), Tadej Pogacar and Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates); Carlos Rodríguez and Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers); Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe); Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla).

Michael Woods did it. He was alone and off the front with a half kilometer to go.

He crossed the line alone to win a supremely prestigious stage.

Further back, Pogacar dropped Vingegaard and finished eight seconds ahead of the Dane. That meant Vingegaard remained the GC leader.

Here's the race organizer's stage nine summary:

Michael Woods won stage 9 to the Puy de Dôme from a breakaway that went from the gun. The duel between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard took place in the last 1.5km of racing. The Slovenian reclaimed 8 seconds but the Dane retained the yellow jersey.

14 RIDERS IN THE LEAD
169 riders took the start of stage 9 in Raymond Poulidor’s village Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat at 13.41. 14 riders took off quickly: Clément Berthet (AG2R-Citroën), Michael Woods and Guillaume Boivin (Israel-Premier Tech), Matteo Jorgenson and Gorka Izagirre (Movistar), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Pierre Latour and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies), David De La Cruz and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny), Jonas Abrahamsen and Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X). The peloton chased hard for a while but gave up at km 20 when they brought Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) and Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) back. The time difference was 6’ at the intermediate sprint of lake of Vassivière (km 30.4) where Abrahamsen anticipated his breakaway companions.

JORGENSON ON THE MOVE
A time gap of 10’50’’ was posted atop côte de Felletin (km 74.8) where Powless passed first. The American was back on his mission to win the polka dot jersey this year. It was 11’40’’ when Boivin was the first rider to escape from the front group. He was reeled in after four kilometres alone in the lead. His initiative was followed by several skirmishes. Jorgenson road away 47km before the end. Mohoric, Burgaudeau, Powless and De La Cruz chased him down. They were fifteen seconds behind when De La Cruz had to stop and get a new bike because of a mechanical.

POGACAR GAINS 8 SECONDS
With 3km to go, Jorgenson was 1’20’’ ahead as Mohoric distanced his two companions. Woods made it across by himself and overhauled the Slovenian before the American. He rode the last 450 metres by himself to become the first non-European winner at Puy de Dôme. Pogacar sped up with 1.5km to go. Vingegaard reacted but the white jersey managed to distance the yellow jersey 600 metres before the line. Pogacar reclaimed eight seconds but Vingegaard retained the overall lead by 17 seconds before the first rest day.
