Weather at the finish town of Bergerac at 1:30 PM, local time: 23C (73F), going to 26C (79F) later in the day. Wind from the SW at 11 km/hr (7mph). No rain is forecast.

Rated ascents:

The race: 180 riders began stage ten at 1:27 PM, local time. There were two notable non-starters: Arnaud Demare, who failed to make the time cutoff in stage nine, and climber Rafal Majka, who crashed in stage nine. Three of Demare's teammates chose to stay with Demare as the sprinter struggled to complete the stage. Mickael Delage, Jakopo Guarnieri and Ignatas Konovalovas were also eliminated as a result.

Km 15: At the gun Yoann Offredo (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) took off. He was soon joined by Elie Gesbert (Fortuneo-Oscaro). The duo already have a 4min 43sec lead.

Km 36: The pack has stabilized the breakaway's gap. The two escapees are 4min 30sec up the road. Lotto-Soudal leads the peloton.

Km 60: Gesbert & Offredo have built a 5min 40sec gap. It was reported that Alberto Contador was feeling so bad that he did not go for an easy training ride on Monday. It is very rare that a rider in a Grand Tour does not keep his legs loose with an easy ride on a rest day.

Km 91: After two hours of racing the average speed is 43.5 km/hr. Gesbert & Offredo have a 4min 11sec lead.

Km 93: The break has been pulled back a bit. The duo's lead has been cut to 3min 30sec.

Km 148, 30 to go: Gesbert and Offredo are just 1min 30sec ahead of the field. The race is facing a headwind.

The finish: With 7 kilometers to go Gesbert and Offredo were caught. Lotto-Soudal hammered at the front, stringing out the peloton.

Marcel Kittel won his fourth stage this Tour. Chris Froome finished safely in the pack to keep his GC lead.

Here is the organizer's telling of the day's racing:

Marcel Kittel has won four of the five bunch sprints he contested at the Tour de France as he easily beat John Degenkolb and Dylan Groenewegen in Bergerac at the end of stage 10 that highlighted the breathtaking landscapes of the Dordogne province.

180 riders started stage 10 of the 104th Tour de France at Périgueux. Defending King of the Mountains Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe) wasn't one of them as he withdrew from the race after being injured in a nasty crash during stage 9. Yoann Offredo (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) attacked from the gun and lamented the absence of breakaway companions until Elie Gesbert (Fortuneo-Oscaro) rejoined him at km 3. There was no reaction until Julien Vermote (Quick-Step Floors) and Lars Bak (Lotto-Soudal) seized the reins of the peloton at km 17 once the gap had reached 5.20. The maximum difference between the duo and the peloton was 5.35 at km 60.

Gesbert was first atop the two category 4 climbs of the day while Offredo won the intermediate sprint at Saint-Cyprien where André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) won the first battle of the sprinters ahead of Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors). It was a very scenic stage through the wonderful landscapes of the Dordogne province but not an eventful one like the two previous stages. Gesbert and Offredo were reined with 7km to go as the headwind was not helping them to stay away.

Lotto-Soudal was the most active team at the head of the peloton in the last five kilometers. But in the final stretch, Kittel was the most powerful sprinter. He won for the fourth time at this year's Tour de France, by one length of a bike ahead of his compatriot John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) to become the German record holder of stage wins at the Tour de France with a total of 13 since 2013. He consolidated his lead in the points classification while Chris Froome retained the yellow jersey.

Organizer's stage 10 preview:

After a rest day in Dordogne, the debates resume in a romantic and peaceful atmosphere. But the challenge of winning a stage will stop the possible inclination to take it easy, notably when the pack moves closer to the Lascaux Grotto which will have its entire replica drawings available to see as of next December. Whether they're enthusiasts of cave arts or not, the riders will be mainly focused on the sprint to take on, (or avoid, depending on the actors) in Bergerac.
