Stage 4 crash

100 meters to go: Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish bumped near the barrier and Cavendish has gone down. Arnaud Demare (center, blue shoulders) won the stage.

Weather at the finish town of Vittel at 1:15 PM, local time: 24C (76F) and going up to 26C (80F). Partly cloudy with the wind from the NNW at 4mph. No rain is forecast.

Rated ascent:

The race: Update! Peter Sagan has been kicked out of the 2017 Tour de France.

195 riders started the fourth stage at 12:18 PM. It's the third consecutive stage that's longer than 200 kilometers.

Km 48: At almost the gun, Guillaume van Keirsbulck (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) took off. He's still out there, alone, with a 12min 31sec lead on the pack. He's a good rider, having won Le Samyn earlier this year.

Km 85: Van Keirsbulck is slowly being reeled in. After getting more the 13 minutes ahead of the field, he now has a 7min 50sec gap. Team Sky had been leading the field, but Lotto-Soudal & Quick Step have also thrown in some horsepower at the front.

Km 105: Van Keirsbulck is still out there, now with a 6min 3sec lead. FDJ, Lotto-Soudal and Quick Step have riders pulling. Team Sky is clustered near the front. The race is averaging about 41 km/hr.

Km 124: Van Kiersbulck is still alone, now with a lead of 5 minutes. Things have speeded up a bit. Average speed for the stage so far is 41.5 km/hr

Km 135: Van Kiersbulck is being reeled in in a slow, controlled manner. With 73 kilometers to go he is 4min 44sec ahead.

Km 181, 26.5 to go: It's only a matter of time. Van Kiersbulck is 76 seconds ahead of the field.

The finish: Van Kiersbulk was caught with 16.5 kilometers to go, setting things up for a big rush to the line. Going up the side Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish bumped with Cavendish going down. Arnaud Demare won the stage with Geraint Thomas retaining his GC lead. Cavendish's team has put in a protest against Sagan, asking that he be kicked out of the Tour.

Peter Sagan was initially relegated to 115th place with a 30sec penalty, but has now been kicked out of the 2017 Tour de France.

Here's the NBC video of the crash:

Here's the organizer's telling of the day's racing:

Arnaud Démare stormed to victory in stage 4 of the 104th Tour de France as he fended off Peter Sagan and Alexander Kristoff in a bunch gallop in Vittel. Two crashes in the last kilometer prevented some sprinters from contesting the victory. Geraint Thomas retained the yellow jersey for the fourth consecutive day ahead of the first summit finish at La Planche des belles filles.

195 riders took the start of stage 4 in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxemburg. Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) attacked from the gun and there was no reaction from the peloton. He got a 13.15 advantage at km 59 before Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) and Julien Vermote (Quick-Step Floors) started setting the pace of the peloton after leaving the Team Sky of race leader Geraint Thomas regulating a slow tempo for the first hour of racing.

French teams FDJ with Arthur Vichot and Cofidis with Nicolas Edet, racing for their respective sprinter Arnaud Démare and Nacer Bouhanni, helped the two Belgian squads from half way into the stage. The gap was down to six minutes with 90km to go. At the intermediate sprint of Goviller with 50km to go, the deficit of the peloton was 2.40 and the fastest man was Démare who outsprinted Peter Sagan, André Greipel and Marcel Kittel. Van Keirsbulck's advantage was down to two minutes when he scored the only King of the Mountains up for grabs at the col des Trois-Fontaines 37km away from the finish in Vittel. Nathan Brown (Cannondale-Drapac) remained in the polka dot jersey, becoming the first American to do so since Greg LeMond (in 1986), Tejay van Garderen (in 2011) and Taylor Phinney (yesterday) lost it after one day.

Van Keirsbulck was reined with 16.5km to go after 191 kilometers of a solo breakaway. He received the price of the most aggressive rider of the day. A crash with one kilometer to go stopped Marcel Kittel. Démare made the right move to overtake Alexander Kristoff while Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish clashed and the Brit went down heavily. Démare is the first Frenchman to win a bunch sprint of the Tour de France since Jimmy Casper in Strasbourg in 2006. The last French stage winner wearing the blue-white-red jersey of French champion was Thomas Voeckler in Bagnères-de-Luchon in 2010 Luchon. Démare also took the green jersey, which no Frenchman did since Sylvain Chavanel, also in 2010. Geraint Thomas came home safely to retain the yellow jersey.

Complete Results: Since this was posted, Peter Sagan has been kicked out of the 2017 Tour de France.

Riders delayed by the crashes near the finish were given the same time as winner Demare. Hence, the rather confused looking stage results times after 116th place.

Organizer's stage 4 preview:

Stage 4 will honor Luxemburger champions of the Tour de France from François Faber to Andy Schleck, the latter having the privilege to attend the start only 200 metres away from his home in Mondorf-les-Bains. It's a flattish race in the east of France with a finish in Vittel. The thermal station is famous for producing the official water of the Tour de France. It also made history for hosting the Grand Départ of the 55th edition in 1968 under the tagline “Le Tour de la santé” (the Tour of the health) one year after the tragic death of Tom Simpson on the Mont Ventoux.

This time around, it looks like a stage dedicated to sprinters but the last visit to Vittel saw the solo victory of Nicki Sorensen in 2009. But it was stage 12 and the sprinters were already tired. Now on stage 4 they are still fresh. Marcel Kittel who wears the green jersey is hungry for more, so is French champion Arnaud Démare who was the runner up in Liège and finished sixth atop the climb of the Religieuses in Longwy yesterday. The enfant du pays is a sprinter as well! Nacer Bouhanni hails from Epinal in the Vosges province that Vittel is also part of. He's yet to win his first ever stage at the Tour de France.
