Major ascents:

The Race: Vincenzo Nibali had predicted that this would be a fearsomely difficult stage. He was sure right about that.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

The speed was high from the gun and very soon seventeen riders were clear, none of whom presented a GC threat.

Wanting to take back his leadership in the mountains classification, break member Joaquin Rodriguez was first over the Col du Lautaret. After the Lautaret's descent the break's lead, which had been as much as five minutes, was down to two minutes 33 seconds.

Rodriguez was also first over the mighty Izoard, getting both the KOM points and the 5,000 Euro Souvenir Henri Desgrange prize for being the first over the Tour's highest point.

On the Izoard's descent Romain Bardet and his Ag2r teammates attempted to split the yellow jersey group. There was a furious scramble and before the final ascent to Risoul had begun, there was a general regoupment. The front break was down to eleven riders, 1 minute 47 seconds ahead of the peloton.

Sky's Geraint Thomas slaved away at the front of the break, trying to set things up for teammate Mikel Nieve. But Rafal Majka had other plans. He went solo up the final climb while in the yellow jersey group the attacks started firing off.

With four kilometers to go Nibali attacked with Jean-Christophe Péraud stuck to him like a limpet. A half-minute back Thibaut Pinot, Romain Bardet, Tejay Van Garderen with Alejandro Valderde for company were chasing. Then, astonishingly, Valverde cracked. He was dropped.

Rafal Majka is enjoying terrific form. The Tinkoff-Saxo rider crossed the line alone. A half-minute later Nibali, refusing to give any presents, beat Péraud to the line for second.

Nibali has tightened his grip on the yellow jersey. And despite faltering on the final climb, Valverde remain in second place, followed by the two feisty Frenchmen, Bardet and Pinot. What a terrific day of racing!

Stage 14 live updates:

Weather at Risoul at 1:05 local time: A little nicer than yesterday 23C (73F), wind from the south at 16 km/h (10 mph). No rain in the last 24 hours and only a 10% chance of rain during the day. There is light drizzle on the Col du Lautaret. 51% humidity.

Km 0: This is the second and final day in the high Alps. The consensus is that today will be harder even than yesterday.

173 riders signed on, including Astana's Jakob Fuglsang, who crashed spectacularly yesterday after hitting a bottle that fell out of Jurgen Van den Broeck's bottle cage. Fuglsang is covered in bandages.

Very quickly after the stage start, Lampre rider Rafael Valls abandoned, unable to continue after an earlier crash injured his left knee.

Km 25: The race was active from the gun. The results of the hard riding in a stage that started climbing the Col du Lautaret almost from the start was a split in the peloton. There are 17 riders about three minutes ahead of the peloton with the yellow jersey. Peter Sagan is in the front end of the split, as is Rodriquez. The intermediate sprint is coming up shortly.

In the front group: Mikel Nieve and Geraint Thomas (Sky), Jesus Herrada (Movistar), Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), Rafal Majka and Nicolas Roche (Tinkoff), Peter Sagan and Alessandro De Marchi (Cannondale), Steven Kruijswijk (Belkin), Christophe Riblon (AG2R), Albert Timmer (Giant), José Serpa (Lampre), Amaël Moinard (BMC), Cyril Gautier (Europcar), Nicolas Edet and Rein Taaramäe (Cofidis) and Simon Yates (Orica).

Though there are many fine riders in this group, none present a threat to the GC. Geraint Thomas is the highest ranked, 18th @ 14min 5sec.

Km 36: The gap to the 17 riders is 3min 29sec. Neither the break nor the chasing peloton seems to be driving hard at the moment.

Km 43: The break did not contest the intermediate sprint, which Peter Sagan easily took. The Astana-led peloton passed the line 3min 40sec after the break. The race is 1hr 2min old. Average speed so far has been 41.6 km/hr.

Km 45.4: The race is passing through Bourg d'Oisons, just a couple of kilometers from the start proper of the Col du Lautaret.

Km 50: The race is on the 34-km Lautaret. The speed remains moderate. The pack isn't strung out yet. The gap to the 17 riders up the road is 3min 14sec.

Astana still has all nine team members in the race.

Km 56: The 17 riders are 4 minutes ahead of the peloton.

Km 64, 113 km remaining: The race has been fairly calm. The gap is four minutes. Sagan is in the front group of 17 twiddling a small gear. Astana continues to lead the peloton. There is a little drizzle as the Col du Lautaret is ascended.

Km 74: FDJ had momentarily added little horsepower to the chase, but the front of the peloton is back to being all Astana. Despite the brisk start to the stage, the race is now about three minutes behind the projected schedule. The group of 17 leaders is 4min 47sec ahead of the peloton.

Km 79: The gap has gone out to 5 minutes with just a few kilometers left of the Lautaret. The race is 2hr 25min old. Average speed had gone down to 32.6 km/hr.

Km 110: Of course, Joaquin Rodriguez was first over the summit of the Lautaret, scarfing up the 10 KOM points. Though Rodriguez is wearing the polka dots, Vincenzo Nibali actaully leads the KOM classification. But Nibali's torso is covered with yellow.

At the bottom of the high-speed descent of the Lautaret the 17 riders have a reduced lead of 2min 33sec. NetApp-Endura is leading the peloton's chase.

Km 114: The break has arrived at the base of the Izoard. The first rider to the top will get 5,000 Euros because it is the highest point of the Tour, the Souvenir Henri Desgrange.

The great Louison Bobet believed that it is on the Izoard that riders should forge their legacy. In 1953 Bobet performed one of cycling's great set-pieces on the Izoard, a ride that earned him the first of his three yellow jerseys.

Km 117: As the Izoard begins to bite, riders are being shelled, both from the break and the peloton. Up front Sagan and Albert Timmer are shelled. NetApp still leads the peloton with Astana in close attendance.

Km 124, 53 km to go: The break, now down to 15 riders, is 2min 40sec ahead of the peloton. The last NetApp-Endura rider has pulled off and now Astana is back at the job of leading the peloton. The NetApp riders who had been pacing the pack are now having trouble maintaining contact with the peloton. NetApp must have ambitions to advance Leopold Konig's cause.

Km 127: NetApp has returned to the front of the yellow jersey group. There are about 10 kms left of the Izoard. Geraint Thomas is hammering away at the front of the break. Is he trying to set things up for breakawy companion and teammate Mikel Nieve? That would be a good result for Sky, which now has about zero GC possibilities.

Km 129: The pressure from NetApp has really reduced the peloton, which is now in a line as they ascend the Izoard's final kilometers. Nibali is near the front, looking unstressed. Joaquin Rodriguez is at the front of the break. With 5,000 Euros (6,750 USD) available to the first man to the top, I'm sure Rodriguez will have to fight for the KOM points waiting at the top.

The break is three minutes ahead of the field. Riders are being shelled form the lead group. Nicolas Edet was just dropped.

Back in the peloton, Ag2r has brought Romain Bardet to the front.

Km 132: Michal Kwiatkowski is having trouble staying with the yellow-jersey group.

Up front: Rodriquez is leading as the break approaches the Izoard's summit. He gets it. Rodriquez at this point is the leader of the KOM classification with 88 points to Nibali's 70.

Km 134: Thibaut Pinot led the yellow jersey group over the Izoard 2min 55sec after the break crested the mountain. Has Pinot overcome his fear of high-speed technical descents? FDJ has been working with him to overcome his difficulties getting down mountains.

The break is down to 10 riders: Geraint Thomas (Sky), Jesus Herrada (Movistar), Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), Rafal Majka (Tinkoff), Alessandro De Marchi (Cannnondale), Steven Kruijswijk (Belkin), José Serpa (Lampre), Amaël Moinard (BMC) and Simon Yates (Orica).

Km 140: The riders are descending at 90 km/hr.

BAM! Romain Bardet has attacked on the descent. Jakob Fuglsang and Nibali have closed up to him.

Pinot is chasing hard.

Km 146: Riders are making it up to the Bardet/Nibali group.

Km 148: Jean-Christophe Peraud is leading his teammate Bardet. Pinot has made contact with the Bardet/Nibali group. It looks like Tejay Van Garderen has missed the move.

Thre are 11 riders in the front group, 8 in the Bardet/Nibali chase, 1min 47sec back.

The peloton with Van Garderen has just made it up to the Yellow Jersey group.

Dries Devenyns has crashed and abandoned.

Km 157: Next up, the final first-category ascent to the hilltop finish at Risoul. The eleven leaders are 1min 32sec ahead of the yellow jersey group, which has grown as dropped riders scramble to regain contact.

Km 162: Geraint Thomas has done a ton of work leading the break, but the lead is just 68 seconds. Ag2r is full of vim and vigor and fear no rider. They are driving the peloton.

The break has just started the final climb.

Richie Porte has been dropped from the peloton.

Km 165: The break has just 40 seconds. Rui Costa has been dropped from the peloton. Ag2r has three riders at the front of the peloton to help Bardet. Nibali is right with Bardet.

Up at the break, Alessandro de Marchi has attacked, taking José Serpa with him.

10 km to go: De Marchi and Serpa are 46 seconds ahead of the yellow jersey group. De Marchi has dropped Serpa. Rafal Majka has caught De Marchi. Makja taps De Marchi on the back and tells him to come along. Rodriguez is closing in on De Marchi and Majka.

The Ag2r-led peloton is 36 seconds back

Majka has dropped De Marchi.

8 km to go: Rodriguez has caught Majka.

Scarponi has been dropped by the yellow jersey group. Nibali has no teammates.

7 km to go: It's Majka in the lead, Rodriguez and De Marchi @ 19 seconds, then the yellow jersey group another 27 seconds back.

5 km to go: Majka is tapping out a wonderful rhythm. He's 56 seconds ahead of the yellow jersey group.

Bam! Pierre Rolland attacks. Jean-Christophe Peraud marks him. The pair is brought back.

4 km to go: Majka has 62 seconds. Rolland goes again, this time in the big ring.

Double Bam! Nibali just rides away. Peraud seems to easily mark him. Rodriguez and De Marchi have been passed.

Now Valverde goes after Nibali with Van Garderen in hot pursuit. Pinot and Bardet have made it up to Valverde as well. Majka has 53 seconds.

Konig has been dropped. So has Rolland.

2 km to go: Majka has 47 seconds. Nibali attacks Peraud and Peraud closes back up.

Majka has 32 seconds now.

Valverde has been dropped from the Van Garderen chase.

1 km to go: Majka is 29 seconds ahead of Nibali and Peraud. The Bardet/Pinot/Van Garderen group is another half-minute back. Valverde is 25 seconds behind Bardet.

The finish: Rafal Majka crosses the line alone. Nibali won't gift Peraud second place as they cross the line a half-minute later. Pinot and Bardet fight it out, it looks like Pinot beat his compatriot. Van Garderen is just behind them.
